"I'll have to break it to them, then." Amara took a deep breath, and looked out over the surrounding marsh. In the distance. herons took to flight. "It'll have to be tonight."

"That's pretty soon." Christine said. "Are you going to collect your vacation time in the next days?"

"My vacation time's coming in July." Amara answered. "We would be away at least two months to make the trip worthwhile."

"Do you know anyone over there other than your ex?" Christine asked. It seemed not that fun to stay there for two months while her kids were with their father, and she would most likely not want to be around him very much if any.

"I have one cousin over there, and she's gone into the US forces over there." Amara said. "Still a bit far apart. But I'll manage."

Christine breathed gently on Amara. "I cannot imagine how this is for you." She said. You fight on keeping a semblance of a family while all I've done is to run away from it, and even the possibility for one.
Helen sighed. The first rounds of tests had returned, and now it was time to convince some of those to be put in house arrest or go to the ranch. Pilar had unfortunately set a bad precedence by going in house arrest. If there were enough people, it would paralyze work even further just by making people take care of those stuck in their rooms. The ranch had to be presented as the better option. She had the right arguments, but a lot of work. A whole slew of it.

"I just hope my muzzle doesn't go grey before its time." Amara sighed. "Kids do that to you."
Lionel called into Helen's clinic office. "How goes the battle?"

"I doubt you'll see a grey muzzle in a long time." Christine chuckled and even though it strained a bit on her broken wing, she lowered herself to be more on the level with Amara.
"Stilted." Helen admitted. "I got my slave labor hunting down the infected lot. Already got a couple of deluded people who won't admit that they're either not noticing their headaches or coughs, or the fact that they may be asymptomatic. Oh, and you're in the clear, at least you were last night."

"Good to know, thanks." Lionel replied. "I know Pilar's decision might have had awkward consequences for you, but for her, it's probably the best thing to do after that porn clip thing. She can't be seen to be running away from it."
Amara gave Christine an affectionate nose-biff. "I hope not, but everything seems to be conspiring to work on it."

"I know." Helen sighed and rested her head in her palm. "If it were just her, there would be no problem. But most of us here are just geeks, given that we work here to begin with. Very few want to go to a ranch for isolation, and Pilar set a bad precedent for them to follow. We can only support so many in house arrest isolation."
"Remember to mail us all when you're there." Christine said. "And we'll keep in contact, to show that someone still cares in case you'll have more bad days than good days there."

"Then you'll have to explain Pilar's unique situation and persuade the others that the ranch might be the better place for'em." Lionel said. "Need any help there?"
"Thank you." Amara smiled wanly. "It's a big leap to take."

"Sure." Helen said. "I got two that want the house arrest. I obviously can't get Miles to do it while he has a pretty good voice. Oh, and I still haven't patient zero. But not all batches have been processed."
"And it must be scary." Christine sighed, catching on her nervousness and slight depression. "Perhaps it would be better for you to spend more time with the others at the base than doing welfare checks with me. More company to help you get through this."

"I'll be right over." Lionel said.
"It's OK, it's what I have to do." Amara smiled. "I'll have the afternoon off, though, and that's when I'll tell the kids."

"They're in my office." Helen said.
"Good luck." Christine again bowed down. Then she figured what subject to change to. "So, anything about Lewis that I haven't heard about, especially about him?" She smirked. If Lewis did indeed fancy her, she wanted to know some 'inside' information that he would usually deny her out of fear of rejection later on.

"Good." Lionel answered before hanging up. It would take him a few minutes to get over.
Amara sighed "Well, Lewis was having some complications last night. This girl was pursuing him, thought you should know. He's been making every effort to avoid her, and Picard and Sera have been running interference for him. Looks like your typical starf*cker, and he knows it. Says he desperately wants to see you once he can shake her off his trail."
