"They look pretty happy together." Kendall observed. He turned back to Ebony. "So how is Bree doing? I heard from Robin that she was sick."
"The very best kind." Randy nodded. "You guys are really lucky to have a mom like her."
Erika was looking on as Randy interacted with the children, in that uniquely female way in which a woman will size up a man as a husband-and-father prospect.

"Well, last I visited her, she was starting to get better," said Ebony, "and now that Shale's there with her, the two of them have decided to get married tomorrow and she's hoping that she's well enough for that."
*****
"She's awesome," said Falcon, "She told us that she was a teenager when she had us, but she kept us after we were born."

"Oh, man." Kendall was surprised at that news. "I gotta get them something."
"I'd say that IS awesome." Randy agreed. "She's really worked to keep you safe and sound and give you a good life. You want to thank her for that, every day."
Dude, Randy's smalltrack kit, came up to Artemis and rubbed his head against her fender.

"We could go into town..." said Ebony.
*****
"We do," nodded the twins.
Artemis blinked and turned her attention to Dude, looking at him curiously with hazel eyes. "Nice kitty...?"

"Yeah, that's what I was thinking. There's lots of gift shops there, I bet." Kendall nodded.
"And Erika's going into the amateur boat races this morning." Dawn said. "They should be starting off for town pretty soon."
"And extra on Mother's Day, I bet." Randy grinned.
"I think you're gonna make a great father, Randy." Erika nuzzled her beau. Randy was caught speechless for a moment, then returned the gesture.
Dude responded with a "meow" and purred as he brushed against Artemis.
"So, are you all just about ready to head out for the races?" Stokes asked Freda.

"Well, being in town a few times there are," said Ebony, then remembered something else, "And at the docks too. I bought a few gifts for the boys and Arte from a little boat girl who was selling them."
She paused for a moment, "I think we should go into town. Just to spend the day doing some shopping and meeting my new friends. I don't want to have to be worrying about anything today."
"I decree that today should be a day of fun," Delfina said jokingly, sounding like a English queen.
*****
Both Kestrel and Falcon giggled at this.
*****
"Nice kitty," Artemis said as she tentatively reached out to stroke Dude's head gently.
*****
Freda nodded, "Yes, I am."

Dude purred louder as Artemis petted him, and licked her antenna.
"Hey, Dude likes you." Dawn bent down beside Artemis. "You know, he's Randy's kitty."
"And I'd love to see the town" Kendall agreed. "Maybe we'll see that little girl again."
Marty, not to be ignored, tossed a beach ball towards the boys. "Hey, catch!"
"If anyone's going with us, now would be the time to let them know." Stokes glanced back towards the beach.

"He is?" asked Artemis, looking up at Dawn.
*****
"She might not recognize me again," said Ebony, "I was in disguise when I was at the docks."
*****
Both Kestrel and Falcon blinked in surprise and scurried to catch the beach ball Randy tossed at them.
*****
"Okay," said Freda, turning and blasting her horn to get the humans' attention.
*****
Delfina looked out at the research vessel when she heard the horn blast. "Hey, Freda promised she'd take some of us to the races this morning," she said, "Looks like she's ready to leave now."

"You never know, boats also have a pretty good sense of smell." Kendall smiled. "Take it from a Newfie boy who grew up in a port town." He looked out towards the beach. "Looks like the kids are getting along with your new friends."
"Yeah, just watch." Dawn pointed as Randy waved a bag of kitty treats from his aerial, the most reliable method of summoning the little beast. Dude's ears pricked, and he bounded off to rejoin his owner. "They're all getting ready to go to town, because Erika is entered in a race."
Marty watched the kids chase the ball. Downshore, a number of humans were getting out the inflatables to go meet Freda.

Ebony nodded as she looked toward where the children were. "Yeah, they are. Glad to see them so happy."
*****
Artemis giggled as Dude darted eagerly back to Randy. She then looked back at Dawn when she heard that Erica was racing, "She does?"
*****
"C'mon, Dawn," Delfina called back toward her young friend as she headed toward one of the inflatables, "Let's get going."
*****
Nerisa was already underway and had joined Freda and Stokes in waiting for the humans.

"She didn't for a while, but she's getting back to it." Dawn nodded. "I have to go now, but your folks are taking you into town anyway, so you might see her there." She turned, bag in hand, and went off to join the other humans. "See you later."
Kendall waved to the children. "Come on kids, we're going to town."
Stokes moved aside to keep the way clear for the Zodiacs when they came in.

"Bye," said Artemis as she scampered back to her mother and father. She was soon joined by her older half-brothers.
Ebony, after making sure that her children were there and attentive, turned and drove down the road toward Villa Hermosa.
*****
Freda waited while the humans boarded her and waited for the word that they were safe and ready before she set out for the races.

Kendall took up the rear of the family procession, keeping the kids together. With his four-ways blinking to signal that he was escorting children, he set off with the rest of them.
Stokes waited patiently through the boarding process, then proceeded to escort his lady out to town.
Randy and Erika went off to the registration area for the amateur races, to get her starting place assignment and number. Turbines weren't common, so she would have only two others to compete against in her division.

Ebony kept her speed reasonable so the children could keep up with her as they drove to Villa Hermosa.
*****
Freda was soon underway to take the humans to see the races.
*****
Raven, in his human form, was persuaded to come along as well. These boat races intrigued him.

"Quite a nice little place." Kendall remarked as he looked at the colorful array of store windows and awnings. People were already filtering in to get a good spot for the races, though the "main event", the PBI pro races, wouldn't start until the afternoon. The Saturday morning street market was in full swing, selling art, crafts, antiques and treats. Bill was there, along with Jackie and Elsie. His stall was full of carvings of all sizes. Here, traffic was restricted to a walking pace, and a couple of helicopters with folded rotor blades could be seen carefully negotiating their way among the cars, net bags hanging from their teeth.
"That's Robin." Kendall rose on his shocks to get a better view. "And I think that's her brother with her... and his wife?"
Dawn leaned against the rail as Freda hove to and prepared to anchor. The course was set out in bright yellow buoys out in the bay, and the Coast Guard and local harbor patrol were out in force, keeping the crowds in check and looking for problems. Bree's stand-in circled overhead, making sure that the media and racing team helos respected each other's space. Dawn frowned at the other HH-65 woman. "God, she looks skinny."
