"Yes, and I've found something that you all might find interesting," said Delfina as she pulled out the plastic bag with the candy wrapper in it.
*****
"Well, I think that this might be helpful in finding and catching the one who had done this," said Ebony, "He left this behind, which means that he didn't think to far ahead in his plan to wreck this place. He didn't think he'd be leaving a piece of himself that would connect him to the crime. So that was his mistake and he's gonna pay for it."

"Could be Fillmore and I surprised him when we went back last night." Bill looked back at the carnage in his yard. "And this guy already looks like somebody who has very little self-control, or self-respect for that matter."
Guy went from startlement at Delfina's present shape to OH-REALLY? in nothing flat. "I'd like to compare that with the scent on the fake receipt they gave."

"No, I've never known Fillmore to eat cinnamon-filled Gask-Its," said Ebony, "It's not organic. And besides, being a tuner, I can tell the difference between two scents and it's definitely not Fillmore. Someone else did this and I'm pretty sure this guy is still hanging about the area."

Delfina held out the wrapper, "Sure. Have at it."

"He's a darned fool." Jackie harrumphed. "What's he thinking, when the police are crawling all over the place looking for whoever did this mischief?"
Her great-granddaughter, in the meantime, was surveying the damage rather disconsolately. Her great uncle's yard was usually a wonderland of whimsical scrap-metal sculpture, and the intruder had made a complete shambles of it.
Guy called out to Sharon, asking her to get Greg over with the receipt he'd kept. Momentarily, the forklift came out with his evidence, and held out both for Bree's parents to sniff. It didn't take long for them to come to a consensus.
"That's the same scent on both of them, all right." Guy said to Delfina. "Both the candy and whoever had it."

"It was a van," said Delfina, "The same one who oogled me when I was passing by the diner. He said something to me that was a... um, a sexual reference... I think. Anyway, when I called him on what he said to me, he started to sweat and then bolted, leaving his refuse behind him, like he was afraid of me or something."
*****
"I'm pretty sure he must've been looking for something very specific," said Ebony, "Something that his boss wanted him to retrieve for very specific reasons. Like the same reasons he tried to poison Commander LeVassaur. There has to be a motive somehow in all of this."

"I wouldn't presume that he had anything resembling a guilty conscience if he's still staying around." Guy snorted. "He's waiting for something... maybe further orders. But he's a careless b*st*rd."
"You don't suppose..." Billy mused. "You think they were after my papers, or that artifact?"

"Yes, so careless that he forgot that there were other witnesses to what had just happened at the diner," huffed Delfina, "People knows what he looks like now. A real big mistake on his part."
*****
"Could be," said Ebony, looking at Bill, "Why don't you go check to see if you still have those, just in case?"

"Unless he finds some way of disguising himself." Guy looked out towards the road. "But his scent would still give him away." He looked up as three helos approached. "Ah... they're here with Rosemary.
Robin and Jordan allowed Rosemary first landing. Jordan's wife was of the Bell 430 strain, sleek and eye-poppingly gorgeous. She was black with streaks of silver running along her body, from nose to tail boom. Her eyes were silver-grey and soft. She was, evidently, a high-class transport, employed by a charter service or privately engaged by someone of great wealth. And in the eyes of many helicopter males, Jordan would be a lucky man indeed.
Bill excused himself, and went back inside. There were sounds that indicated floorboards being moved, and he came out a few minutes later with an old binder. "They didn't get this."
He opened it up, and it was full of notes and sketches of his recollections of that night.

Delfina glanced over to watch the new helicopters land. She hadn't been introduced to them yet, so kept quiet for a bit, though she was thinking that if Rosemary were a human, she'd be drop-dead gorgeous and all the guys would want her... or at least their tongues would be hanging out, metaphorically speaking.
She was also a bit reluctant to come out of her Mustang guise.

Ebony viewed the folder and its contents, blinking. "Is all that about that UFO?"

"That's Rosemary, my son's wife." Guy told Delfina. "She works for a charter company, taking the rich and famous off to the ski slopes. And later, Jordan and his friends dig them out of the snow after their inevitable defeat by the laws of physics." He smiled tightly at the irony.
"Yeah." Bill nodded. "And the dreams I had afterwards. My mom always said I had a little touch of something up here." He tapped his antenna on his roof.

The mention of skiing brought back memories for Delfina. Memories of a near-forgotten time back on a planet that used to be lush with life before the big blow-up. "We had that sport in our world too," she said, "A lot of my people used to ski and we were very good at it. Well, at least some of us were. Others had trouble learning how to balance on skis and how to maneuver down slopes. But they were fun times. However, I don't think we can do that anymore. It's only memories now."

"I know what it is," said Ebony, "I have it too. But, I think the whole thing with the UFO is real. You have met Raven and know what he can do. This might put him in danger."
She wanted to get to the bottom of this mystery and find out how exactly everything that has happened so far is connected to the shapeshifting alien at Phantom Cove.

Bill glanced carefully towards the little girl to see that the child wasn't overhearing this. "And those no-accounts don't care who else they hurt to get what they want."
"Never say never, amie." Guy smiled. "I'd be interested in seeing how you do it. You could certainly move through tighter spaces than the cars, and some slopes they can't handle at all." He turned back towards the hangar, where the others were going. "Would you like to meet Rosemary?"

Ebony was getting just a little ticked off, "Okay, stop! I'm sure this is traumatizing to the child, but don't try to play her or yourselves as the victims with me. It won't work. Rationalize for a moment. If we are to make this right again for her or for anyone else, we have to make the authorities work for us. They're here to protect us from dangerous criminals, war, terrorism, etc. Then make them do their jobs. I can do it easily. I don't see why that's so hard for some people. They don't like how things work, but do nothing productive except rant and rave about it. That really ticks me off."
*****
"I'm not really that great, but good enough to keep my balance and not tumble down the slope head over heels," said Delfina, "And, yes. I would certainly like to meet Rosemary."

Bill sighed. "I've been trying to do that for near on sixty years now, with this case, but how many people's eyes glaze over when someone brings this up?"
The child had turned to watch with wide, startled eyes. Then, she fled into the surrounding woods.
"Elsie?!?" Jackie followed after the child.
Guy led Delfina over to where his daughter-in-law was. "Rosemary, good to see you."
"I can't believe it's so soon." the Bell woman said with reference to the wedding. "But then they've been steady for six years."
"Yes." Guy nodded. "By the way, this is Delfina Verant, another friend of Bree's." he moved aside for the Mustang.

"Then if I were you, I'd try harder," said Ebony, "I would push and push until they cave. I'm not trying to be mean here, but I'm only suggesting that you try seeing this in a different light. Look, I have children of my own, two of them I had while I was homeless and without money. But I don't try to play them off as victims. I tried to make their lives as happy as possible, despite the hardships. But I still fought for their rights. I never gave up on them because they are worth more to me than anything else."
Tears were starting to well up, even as she made this speech as memories of her two-year exile with the twins came back to her.

"Hi, it's nice to meet you, Rosemary," Delfina bobbed her front in greeting.
