"She's only like this when she gets a excuse to drag out the pictures." Bree whispered to Shale. "Your mother does this too, doesn't she?"
Greg was hiding out in the back of the hangar, just barely restraining his laughter.
"Girlfriend, you need more sleep." Erika looked up at Freda with a sympathetic smile. "Get some, and things'll look a bit better when you wake up."
"I heard you had some little ones." Bill nodded. "I'd love to see them visit someday."

Shale nods reluctantly as he whispers back with slight embarrassment, "Yes... she does..." He looked at her apologetically, "You're in for some baby pictures and stories of the cute things I used to do while I was growing up..."
*****
Nerisa gave Freda a nudge, "Go on. We'll wake you up if anything comes up. Or whenever your boyfriend comes back."
"Risa..." Freda sighed at the destroyer's teasing, "Alright... fine... Thanks..."
The research vessel went off to a more out-of-the-way area of the cove and anchored there to take a nap.
*****
"Well, I was thinking of bringing them over," said Ebony, "Of course, after this all blows over with Carl. I don't want them to get hurt."

Guy had the good sense to stay well in the background while his wife regaled everybody with Bree's baby pictures. Bree responded to Shale with an OH-WELL smile and nuzzled him again.
Randy and Erika had gone over to the temporary floating dock at the shore to play another round of "Munchkin" with Manuel and his friends. They had just completed laminating a deck of "Munchkin Fu". Erika was new to this, so Randy was explaining the rules to her. "OK, everybody basically starts out as a human with no class, (laughter) and works their way up to tenth level by basically fighting monsters, getting stuff and stabbing their buddies in the back..."
"I've got also got family to worry about." Bill's brow wrinkled. "I don't want to have to keep them away because a couple' a jerks are making trouble for us."

Shale only shrugged in that GUESS-WE-JUST-HAVE-TO DEAL-WITH-IT sense and returned the nuzzle.
*****
Delfina had taken on a Ford Mustang guise as she came into Villa Hermosa to run some very important errands.
*****
"That's why I go out of my way to make sure anyplace we go to is safe for them to visit," said Ebony, "I'm sort of a scout for my family, gathering information on the place and events of a certain location."

Bree sighed and leaned her head against Shale's.
A grey van lazed in a parking lot, lifting his eyes as the Mustang passed by, though his thoughts didn't go much beyond. "Nice piece of tail."
"Well, we'd like to get these bushwhackers good n' caught, so that people can breathe easy again." Bill nodded.

Shale nuzzled her back. "I love you," he whispered to her.
*****
Delfina stopped and turned to the gray van, looking upon him with sky blue eyes. "Excuse me, but were you talking to me?"
*****
"The police and the Coast Guard are working on it as quickly as they can," said Ebony, "I'm helping them."

"Love you too." Bree answered with a nibble.
"Huh? I didn't say nothin'." the van snorted. "You must be hearing things, lady."
"I can see that." Bill hadn't called any attention to the wounds until now. "But they seem to be healin' up well."

"And I will always love you," Shale said with a purr, "Forever."
*****
"No, I think I heard clearly," Delfina narrowed her eyes at the van, "You said, and I quote, "Nice piece of tail" unqoute. Now, care to argue with me on that?"
*****
"Yeah, I'm using the homemade medication that Greg gave to me, he says it's a family recipe," said Ebony, "and the humans have been making me rest to allow these to heal faster."

Bree purred as well, curling up against Shale like a child. She started to drift off again, as she was still in the recovery process and not quite back to form yet.
The van figured that he had drawn as much attention to himself as he cared to, and a few other cars had started to stare and make remarks. He backed away, trying to put as much distance between himself and the mustang woman as possible. "Hey, just forget about it, OK?" He was already turning his foretires to bolt. Something in her pale blue eyes was suggesting that crossing her would not be a life-enhancing move.
"That's what friends do." Bill laughed. "My friends n' family worry about me at least as much."

Shale gently kissed Bree on the check and let her nestle against him. He didn't mind being a big helicopter pillow for a few days.
*****
Delfina looked at the van for a moment and narrowed her eyes some more. Sometime just sort of clicked to about this guy and she was a little suspicious. "Do I know you from somewhere?"
*****
"I have to admit that I sometimes get annoyed by their constant attention," said Ebony, "but I know that they mean well."

"Like any good family." Bill chuckled. "Speaking of which..." he turned as he heard voices down the drive to his studio. "That's Jackie and the little one."
Greg came up and adjusted the buckles on Bree's blanket. It would remind a human of the blankets they put on horses, except it was sized and fitted for a helo of Bree's class. Up in the far north, they wore these in their idle time to conserve their body heat.
"I dunno you from anywhere!" With a squeal of tires, the van made his exit, leaving some little bit of trash in his wake. He rapidly turned into the traffic, which was starting to intensify as it approached noon hour.

Ebony flicked her mirrors as she turned toward the voices.

Shale just remained where he was.
*****
Delfina watched the van flee, beginning to think that his behavior was very suspicious indeed, even dancing around her questions. He's hiding something, she thought, He's up to something.
She rolled up to the garbage and sniffed it, picking up the recognizable cinnamon scent. She took out plastic bag and put the refuse inside, then headed off toward the Coast Guard station where Bree and her family were to get a helicopter's opinion to confirm her suspicions.

The old stakebed truck and her great-granddaughter came up the drive, surveying the grounds with a mixture of concern and dismay. "They really did a number on you, Bill." Jackie snorted.
"That they did." Bill sighed. "Ebony here was just telling me about the other things that were going on, and we're basically comparing notes here."
Guy was resting at the other side of the heliport, to lift his head as the Mustang approached. Who was this?

"Yeah, I found something while I was sniffing around," said Ebony as she held up a Gask-It candy wrapper, "Someone dropped this and it's one of the cinnamon-filled kind."
*****
Delfina pulled up to the heliport, taking not of Guy resting there. She guessed that he probably doesn't recognize her because she was a Mustang and not a human. But since he had been at the cove to talk to her, he would recognize her by her scent, as well as her voice.
"I'm a shapeshifter too, which means I can take on a variety of different forms whenever I feel like it," she said, pulling to a stop, "but it's me, Delfina. Just take a whiff."

Guy raised his head and flared his nostrils. "Delfina? It's certainly your scent and voice."
Sharon was on the phone with her other daughter, now that Rosemary had arrived and was coming over with them.
"Quite the slob, isn't he?" Jackie snorted. "Leaving a trail of garbage behind. Nothing dumber than a crook, they'll do ANYTHING rather than work for an honest dollar."
