"It'd be nice if he could get some time off." Randy agreed. "Kinda tough when you wear Coast Guard colors and everyone assumes you're always on the job. Which, in effect, you are."
Erika looked back at Freda, "Wish there was something we could do."
"That would be an understatement." Robin sighed. "Papa loves us dearly, but the flip side of that is that he thinks that no man is good enough for his little girls. I had trouble enough getting him to even acknowledge Brett when we got engaged."
Bree stirred in her sleep as her father's nose brushed against her and he licked her face as he did when she was an infant. It was plain to see that he did adore her. Slowly, Bree's eyes opened - they were a little less dull now - and focused on the royal blue shape before her. Her nostrils flared as they caught a scent familiar from birth, when her father's teeth had torn away the sac that had shrouded her in her mother's matrix and his nose nudged her into a nursing position along with her twin brother. Bree lifted her head in response to her father's licks, and sleepily voiced with an inquiring note. "Papa?"

"You are her friends, aren't you?" asked Raven.

"And I'll soon get to know how Brett must've felt," said Shale as he looked back at the hangar, "I wish I could be with her right now."

"We are, but we're kind of at a loss to figure out what we could do for Freda and Ben." Randy admitted. "We're open to suggestions if you have any." He glanced back towards the mopey ship at the mouth of the cove.
At his berth at the CG station, Lt. Stokes was also moping. He was off his rations, much to the annoyance of the dock attendants who couldn't help but wonder if he was also getting under the weather. That's just what they would need, now...
"Mon petite diablesse," Guy nudged his daughter affectionately. What he had said translated as the feminine form of "My little devil", but it was spoken with love. "Still turning our muzzles grey? Shame on you."
"I'm sorry if I worried you again." Bree managed a smile. Greg stayed back at this moment, knowing when to keep his distance. Just because Guy had an attitude towards him didn't mean he had to return that sentiment, and he wouldn't.
"You always worry us." Guy gave Bree another lick on the cheek. "You were born only for this..." he looked around at the confines of the station hangar, "But it will still pound you to pieces and strain your health. I'll be happy when they never send you north again." If anything, he hated the thought of his daughter spending weeks or months living on a cutter's small flight deck, with nothing but a fitted rug and tasteless linseed mash to keep her warm in the frigid arctic conditions. A marriage would reduce the likelihood of such postings, but very few males, in his eyes, were fit suitors for the thoroughbreds that were his daughters. And who could be found who would marry a freemartin?
Sharon hadn't forgotten Shale, and she approached him with a pleasant smile. "So you are Shale? I'm glad I'm finally getting to meet you. I'm Sharon LeVasseur, the mother of these three." she also indicated Robin and Jordan. "And my husband is Guy."

Ebony, who was listening, pulled forward a bit, braving the sand that would get in her tires. "I have an idea," she said, "How about getting them together on a date or something?"
*****
Freda still continued to keep to herself, thinking of all the lonely nights she spent while on one of her research voyages. But at times, even she needed the companionship of fellow vessels. Her thoughts would often turn to that cute cutter she had met.
'Maybe Nerisa was right, she thought, I do like Stokes. But how can I ever get him to be with me?
*****
"Name's Shale Huntington. It's a pleasure to meet you too, Mrs. LeVasseur," Shale returned the greeting with a smile, "You seem different from your husband. He is, if you don't mind me saying this, a little bit cold..."

"IF we could get their schedules coordinated, that would be doable." Erika said. "But I can tell you right now, a coastie's life is all about the duty. It's almost like slavery that you took on voluntarily."
"Guy is very hard to get to know." Sharon admitted, "In fact, the first time we met, I bit him on the tail and sent him packing. Then, he realized that if he wanted me, he was going to have to use his head and figure me out, or pound sand. But, he's been a wonderful husband and father, and once he sees that you're in for the long haul, he'll come around."

"That would certainly be easy for me to find out," said Ebony, "Seems people find it easy to talk to me." She glances at Dawn, "Almost as if I'm an older sister."
*****
"Well, I'm willing to do whatever it takes," said Shale, "I love Bree so much."

"Best time to find him at his dock would be the early morning." Randy said. "He's not scheduled to be away for any long trips until the fall."
Sharon looked back at Guy, who was still communing with his daughter. "If he keeps ignoring you, I'll speak up."

"Thank you, Mrs. LeVasseur," said Shale, "I'll appreciate that."

Bree, however, was one step ahead of her mother. Her fever had gone down to the point that they were able to remove the icebags and put a light, fitted blanket on to keep her from chilling down TOO much. She sat upright on her foam bed, accepted the last dose from Greg, and suppressed a yawn before taking up the issue with her father. "Papa, you already know I'm seeing someone, don't you?"
"Yes." Guy at last turned to face the reality he didn't really want to deal with at this point - the Agusta/Bell mix now talking with his wife. Coming from the original French stock had always given Guy a little bit of pride, and he'd had a hard time coming to terms with his younger daughter choosing a Blackhawk as a mate. The Agusta and Bell genes didn't mix too badly, but there were other factors that now concerned him. "He is a detective, am I correct?"
"Yes." Bree answered with a nod. "He was with the Nitropolis police before he went into the PI business."
"PI's don't have the most stable habits." Guy huffed. "Always moving from place to place. Will he be there for you when you need him?"
Bree sighed. "He's been there when it really matters, Papa. You've always wanted me to have an anchor, now I've found one." She turned her gaze outside. "Shale? Can you come in?"
"I think Freda would appreciate that a lot." Erika nodded.
"Be better than seeing her mope around all the time." Marty added.
"I'll second that emotion." Randy said as he dangled a cat toy for Dude to swat at.

Shale turned when Bree called him and rolled into the hangar. "I'm here. How're you feeling?" he asked her as he came in.
*****
"I'll third it," said Raven, joining in.

"Better all the time, but still sleepy." Bree smiled. "Greg is a saint for putting up with me." The forklift NCO blushed a little. "Shale, this is my father." Bree's copper eyes momentarily locked with those of her father and the fire leapt back into them, letting him know that she wasn't going to stand for Guy blowing Shale off another time.
Guy took a deep breath. "Monsieur Huntington?"
Dude maiowed and leapt to the shore, as if he saw something familiar in this strange new human.

"I guess Dude still recognizes you." Randy raised his 'shades.
Dude rubbed against Raven's legs...
Guy realized that he was now trapped, between Bree on one end, Shale and Greg to the side, and his own wife behind him, who cleared her throat expectantly. At last he returned a nod. "And you as well... Thank you for coming in the hours when she needed you the most."
<<< I could see Guy getting mad enough to join forces with Shale once they find out that Bree's sickness was caused by fuel tampering >>>

Raven knelt down and petted Dude.
Ebony turned to Delfina, "I gotta talk to you. Can we go somewhere private?"
"Sure," Delfina nodded as she followed the Viper to her tent for a private talk.
*****
"I'll always be there for her whenever she needs me," said Shale.

Guy eyed Shale for a moment, the copper in his own eyes flaring momentarily. The set of his back communicated something like I-REALLY-HOPE-THAT-MEANS-SOMETHING, but he restrained his mouth, perhaps more for his daughter's sake than anything else. "I am sure that you will be, Monsieur."
Bree was struggling to stay awake as the last dose took effect. "Papa, just give him a chance." Then her eyes closed, one more time.
Dude purred as Raven petted him.
"You think Delfina and Ebony had the same idea?" Erika mused.
