"Would you do that for me?" asked Ebony.
*****
Delfina was finally relieved to set foot on the sandy beach again. "I guess that's something new we just learned about him."

"Just a sec." Bill went over to the pay phone. "Never could get the hang of them cell things." He punched in some numbers and waited for a few seconds before someone apparently answered. "Hello... Elsie? Could you go get your gran-gran for me? That's a girl..."
Dawn shaded her eyes as she moved back with Delfina. "So where do we go from here?"

Ebony waited while Bill called his cousin.
*****
"All I can say is that we need to keep Raven a secret for the being," said Delfina, "Even if he can shapeshift, he can't be seen by the public."

"Got no problem with that." Dawn shrugged. "But there's a limit on how many people can know and still keep it a secret."
"Jackie, it's Bill! Bill!" the old panel truck repeated. "Sorry to wake ya, but... yeah, I know the neighbors just got a new water tank... sure, yeah. Well, I was just talking to this young lady, she's researching that UFO crash, remember, you and I saw it, she'd like to know what else you remember from that..... no, she's not a reporter and not from the government, I know how you feel about the IRS. Anyway, you wouldn't mind us coming over for a bit?... OK... thanks. We'll see you in a bit... Bye now."
He hung up. "She's real chary over what she'll talk about over the phone."

"Just those within this cove," said Delfina.

"That's okay," said Ebony. "I don't blame her."

"So we can go and see her in a bit," Bill said. "Mind you, she's a little batty."
"I hope so." Dawn sighed. "Don't want any more unwelcome attention."

"Not a problem for me," shrugged Ebony.

"I know," agreed Delfina, "I want to prevent that."

Bill turned his attention to finishing the rest of his drink as Fillmore told Ebony how well he was doing at the organics festival, which wrapped up that night.
"And he's such a sweet, innocent guy, too." Dawn remarked. "Don't want that b*st*rd Carl anywhere near him."

"That's great," said Ebony, as she listening to Fillmore and finished up her fuel.
*****
"We have Nerisa and the Coast Guard on our side, so we can count on them," said Delfina.

Bill waited until the others were ready. "The road up is a bit twisty, so brace yourselves."
"Carl won't come around while they're anywhere near, but he's probably still got associates out there." Dawn frowned.

"Hey, you're talking to the girl who traveled on every kind of road on the continent in any type of weather condition," said Ebony as she went to pay for her fuel, "It's no problem for me."
*****
"The best we can do is try to keep an eye on him and his activities, even if he sends lackeys to do the job for him," said Delfina.

Fillmore and Bill waited for Ebony, then started out with the panel truck in lead, as he knew the back roads.
"Speaking of lackeys and dirty work... did you find out anything more about what happened to Bree?" Dawn asked.

Ebony followed behind them.
*****
"She's sleeping now from what I heard," said Delfina, "Shale's there and so are her brother and sister. Other than that, the boats and I seem to have this theory that someone might've poisoned her this morning, but we don't know who or why."

Dawn looked more relieved at the news that Shale and the sibs were there, but still clenched her jaw in anger. "Poison? How would they do that, now? The Coast Guard doesn't watch anything more closely than what goes into their aircraft."
After several miles up into scrubby hills, far enough inland to lose sight of the sea beyond the ridgeline, Bill came up to a cluster of rather unprepossessing dwellings in a small box canyon. "This is the place."
A white Ford F-150 girl, about ten years old, bounded towards the visitors. "Unca Bill!"
"Hi, Elsie." Bill said. "Your gran-gran didn't fall asleep again, did she?" he asked.
"No, she's out back." Elsie turned and motioned with a tire. "The tractor got loose again."
"Yaaw! Yaaw!" an elderly woman's voice was heard as a tractor came bolting back, followed by a '40 Ford stakebed truck wielding a long bamboo cane. She drove the beast back inside its pen, then secured the gate with twisted wire. "Bossie never knows to stay put." She turned to Bill and his companions. "Well, don't just stand there Bill, introduce us!"
"This is Fillmore, you already met him before, remember?" Bill indicated the Microbus. "And this is the young lady I mentioned, Ebony Massey."
"Mighty charmed." the old truck woman exhibited a crinkly smile.

"We're not really sure, but we're trying to find out," said Delfina, "Jastrow out there managed to snag a couple of cans that had been delivered this morning and we sent them off to Doc to analyze."
*****
"Hello, Ma'am," Ebony dipped her front politely in greeting, "Nice to meet you."
