"looks like we already have some panhandlers." Dawn noted the jet-ski's hanging around the shore, hoping for a handout. "Wonder if they'd be as trainable as the wolfbikes?"
Manuel threw his own gear into another dinghy and rowed to shore, waving goodbye to the boats. He pulled it ashore to rejoin the humans now at work on the evening meal. "Hey, Delfina. Find anything today?"

"Maybe. They remind me of our world's dolphins," said Delfina, looking at the jet-skis again.
Delfina glanced at the shore as Manuel came in, "Just seashells, sea urchins, and crustacians. Sorry, no whales or sharks. This world doesn't have them."

"They're friendly, anyway." Dawn gave them another glance before turning her attention to cleaning her catch for the cook. "So is that mermaid shape doing well down there?"
Manuel shrugged with a bit of regret. "I guess machine-creatures have all the higher niches." He went to his tent and pulled a fresh t-shirt on. Other humans were filtering into the field kitchen to pitch in with dinner.

"It's like that with the land animals as well," said Delfina, "The smallest are mice and rats and there are some birds as well, but anything larger than that are machines like iron elk and qaudwolves. The same goes for the creatures of the sea."
She paused for a moment, turning to Dawn, "It's doing alright, though I still have to rest while I switch from waterbreathing to airbreathing. It takes a long time."

"Do the pressure changes bother you?" Manuel asked. "You're not getting the bends or anything?"
"Speaking of birds," Dawn mused. "Ever notice how a lot of species that went extinct in the human world still exist here? Nobody here needed or wanted to hunt them. Aunt Tamara just sent us an email telling us how the skies in the east are just black with passenger pigeons."

"I do feel a bit of tightness in my chest, but that passes once I finish shifting over," said Delfina, "When I'm in mermaid form, I can't raise my head no higher than my eyes because if I did, I would start gasping like a fish."
She nodded, "Guess this world has animals that ours don't."

"This place is ALWAYS full of surprises." Dawn shrugged as she drew a pot of water for rice. "So, you think Randy is gonna get any further with Freda?"

Delfina shrugged and laughed, "I think their relationship is just gonna stay platonic. I don't think Freda's really looking to hook up anytime soon."

"Doesn't stop the guy from trying." Manuel snickered as he observed the two. "He's nothing if not persistent."
Randy was still cautious yet, fearing that his newfound luck might run out. "Y'know, there's supposed to be a meteor shower the next few nights. Perseids, I think. You into astronomy at all?"

"I know," chuckled Delfina.

"Yeah, my mom got me into it when I was little," replied Freda, "I've been fascinated by it ever since."

"So... you must know quite a few of the stars then." Randy cocked an eyeshade. "And this would be like, the perfect place, no light pollution or anything."
Dude jumped from Randy's gunwhale to Freda's, purring as he rubbed her "temple" area.
Dawn poured in a scoop of rice into the stockpot as the water came to boil "I almost feel sorry for the poor little bugger."

"Yes, I do and my mom says the same thing about places like this," said Freda with a nod of her bow. She chuckled as Dude rubbed against her, "Nice little fellow, isn't he?"
*****
"Well, he might have to wait for awhile," said Delfina, "It takes awhile for Freda to open up and become more comfortable with males."

"Yeah, that's Dude." Randy grinned. "He likes just about everybody, a real little love sponge."
"Well, you've known her longer than we have." Dawn continued to watched the boats interact. "He's smart to have the kit for an icebreaker."

"I can tell," laughed Freda, "Too bad my dad wouldn't let me keep an animal aboard when I was little."
*****
"Reminds me of ol' Rocket," said Delfina.

"Rocket is living the life now," Dawn chuckled. "A whole harem of females for him at the Mountain."
"My folks weren't so fussy." Randy shrugged. "Sure, I got a few claw marks on my afterdeck, but what the hell? It fixes up OK."
