"You can get a temporary card." Doris said. "It'd just take a few minutes."
Dawn looked over at Raven, seeing his look of inquiry. "Generally, the first across the finish line wins, as long as they observed the rules of the race."
Dawn's boyfriend came up with one of the program sheets. "It says here that guy in green is one of the top five amateurs on the west coast. This news is gonna travel."
At surface level, Erika moved off the course at the designated exit point and followed the race officials to their dock along with the other two. About two minutes later, the results were declared official. Randy was allowed to join Erika at the podium dock as the other competitors congratulated her. They didn't appear at all resentful, but they knew they had been beaten today.
Dagmar had the opportunity to observe the victor up-close as she passed by the pro pits. It was at that time that the skater noticed something else - a small knot of a scar maybe three feet forward from the vee-hull's stern.
Chrysler... I remember her nicking her side on that steel dock. It must be her.
She turned against her dock lines to watch the girl head up to the officials' area, drawing protests and admonitions from the crew who were trying to work on her.
Guy continued to look on as Bree slept, and his eyes seemed to glisten as he stood there. "I never thought this day would come for her."
"Well, it's official now." Kendall turned back to the boys. "What do you think of that?"
Stokes blew his own horn in unison with the ship women.

"A temporary card?" asked Ebony.
*****
Raven tilted his head, "We had races from where I came from, but it was mostly in fun. Everybody who participated was a winner."
*****
"You'll have to believe in her, Sir," said Shale, "She such a beautiful an intelligent woman. At least to me, she is."
*****
"Awesome!" the twins said excitedly.
*****
Freda turned and smiled at Stokes, "Did you see that? She won! I knew that she could do it!"

"Well, there were only three in that division today, so each of them will get something." Dawn said. "I think they get cuffs for their aerials."
"It's good for a month." Doris said. "It's for people who are from out of town. We just need your home address and contact information."
"I always did believe in her, but I was never so sure about others." Guy replied. "Until now."
"That was just forty laps, but just because it was short didn't make it any easier." Kendall said to the twins. "And she was up against some serious racers. That's quite an achievement."
"That's really something." Stokes agreed. "Who knows what she could do if she put her mind to it?"
"Earth to Dagmar!" the voice of the coach pulled the skater back to her own concerns. "Your race is coming up. Better get your game face on."
Dagmar turned her eyes back to the small runabout who was her main coach. "Sorry. She kind of looked familiar."
"That girl?" the middle-aged Glastron narrowed his eyes as he checked out the winner of the last amateur race. "I've never seen her in any division before. Not too bad, though. Now, this isn't the biggest race of the season, but the CEO of our sponsor is here to watch with about fifty of his best friends and party pals. Let's show him what he's paying for, alright?"
"Yessir." Dagmar responded with a sharp nod of the bows.

"Oh, like the one Erika had on hers before I took it off," said Delfina.
*****
"Alright," said Ebony and gave her address to Doris.
*****
"I think she knows," said Shale.
*****
"That's cool," said Kestrel, who had been excited when he had watched his own mother race once.
*****
"We need to give her more credit," agreed Nerisa.

"It would have to be something like that, that they could actually wear." Dawn leaned back from the rail. "What would they do with a cup?"
At the official presentation dock, the winners were being awarded their prizes. For amateurs, this consisted of a cuff in gold, silver or bronze that fitted on the base of a powerboat's aerial, and these were engraved with the event, year and some filigreed designs. The ones for the pros were even more elaborate, with jewel-studded rims and accompanied by a matching cup for the team as a whole. With a bright golden cuff on her starboard aerial, Erika moved out smartly after photos were taken, accompanied by Randy, who only smiled enigmatically at the envious stares of the other men of his people. They rejoined Freda, looking up at the humans peering over her rails.
Doris filled out the temporary card and handed it back to Ebony. "Now you're in business."
"She always knew what she was after." Guy nodded. "Society decided her fate at birth, but she learned the ways to make things work for her. If any of our race becomes an admiral, it'll be her, just watch."
"You know, her picture's gonna be all over the place now, and the video of the race as well." Stokes added. "Maybe her family will see it."
"So what would you think of a boat race game, guys?" Kendall asked the children.

"You're asking someone who has never heard of this world before," said Raven, "because I don't know."
Delfina leaned over Freda's rail and waved at Erika and Randy came up. "Erika! That was great!" she called, "Congratulations!"
*****
"Thanks," said Ebony as Artemis handed her the book she had chosen to be checked out, "We'll return it to you somehow when it's due."
*****
"I believe that, Sir," said Shale.
*****
"True," agreed Freda, "Hopefully."
She glanced over as Randy and Erika came up beside her. "Congratulations, Erika."
*****
"I wish Mom was here to see it," said Kestrel.
"Yeah, she's usually the one to like races," added Falcon.

"We'll tell Mama all about it." Kendall said, "And they're sure to have videos of the races online soon." "She's awesome." Elsie followed the racer with her eyes. "She's so cool." Tiffany agreed.
"Thanks." Erika said to all who congratulated her. She was still a bit flushed and shocked at the reality of it all. "I don't think I could've done it without everyone giving me a push." "I knew you could do it, babe." Randy nuzzled her. "You had the look of a warrior princess when you crossed that finish line. I'm so happy to see you owning your life again. That's what you REALLY won today." "But I've got the biggest prize right here." Erika gave Randy a long, loving nuzzle and lick that let him know exactly how she intended to collect her "winnings" -- later! Ensign Jastrow was passing by, and suspended his professional demeanor just long enough to give Randy a wink.
"You can send it back by mail or courier if you aren't here by the due date." Doris told Ebony.
"I may or may not be alive to see that, but I would still die happy." Guy raised his nose as his wife rejoined him. <<< OK, Freda's here: hillbillyhell.proboards103.com/index.cgi?board=fa&action=display&thread=322&page=5#99458 >>>

"Very cool," the twins agreed.
*****
"You've earned it," said Delfina, grinning at the two of them.
*****
"Okay, I know how to do that," said Ebony with a nod.
*****
Shale smiled, "At least that's good to know."
