Yep. new NFS has been anounced. and it's going to be completely different to the previous ones.
this time, we will be playing as an Icelandic fisherman who changes jobs, and we join him as he udertakes his mission to become a profesional street cleaner.
That or it's going to be more realism based as oposed to the Fast & The Furious-a-like games of the last x number of years.
in all seriousness though, announcements include such points as that EA now are allowed to include damage to the cars. and that the free-roaming aspect has been iliminated allong with the cops. I know a lot wont like that bit, but... on the positive again, visual alterations to the vehicles will now make a differnce as will be discernable (at tuning stage) via a wind tunnel. the Dyno's back too. As is drag racing - though i think we can assume it'll be the good sort and not the traffic dodging missions of the recent past. also new will be a Speed event. which, from what I can discern might well be about achieving the highest top speed possible - only a guess though.
also, it seems there's gonna be some international racing going on. though the VERY early and speculative car list i saw - which included about 20 of the supposed 50-60 - apears as US specific as ever. which i personally am not very impressed with. But it is still early on that front, so things might change or improve.

To be honest, I can live without free-roam...I hardly used it in Most Wanted when I could just select all the races and challenges from my hideout. The lack of police is disappointing though. Everything else I'm very excited about...I didn't play Carbon, but a lot of forums etc. were complaining that it was more of the same and that the series was getting old. Good to see it moving in a new direction. Oh, and the graphics... Yum.

I've played all the versions and own four (Underground 1&2, Most Wanted, and Carbon). And I'd always thought 'Most Wanted was the best so far.
I wasn't to thrilled with Carbon and wasn't really good in drift races, but what I did have fun in Carbon was the auto sculpting. I'm interested in seeing how this wind tunnel would work.

Yeah, I've also heard many people recommending MW over Carbon...I only played the demo, and although the autosculpt and regular races are as fun as ever, the drift race gets boring quickly and the canyon racing can be very frustrating if you lose in the second part.
I wonder what the top speed challenge will be like...I'm guessing it'll take place on some huge desert highway or something.
Also, I wonder how performance will be determined this time around. Will it just be a bunch of simple "Speed, Acceleration, and Handling" stats like the previous games or will it be like GT4 or Shutokou Battle where the game combines weight, horsepower, suspension settings, drivetrain, etc. to calculate your car's speed and handling?

I love GT games (3 & 4 for me, Toca's alright; haven't tried Tourist Trophy yet). And I've tried the Fast and Furious title game, I 'HATED' drifting in that. Maybe the tuning would factor into it as well.
But I do like the games that show realistic damage like Ford Street Racing and Nascar. Shows you how bad you are until you get use to the car. Hopefully it'll be good in this one.

my guess is, on the performance side, that they'll implement both the propper numerical data and the bars as seen in Carbon and Most Wanted. So you'll be able to see the specific measurments... such as weight, power, dimensions, aerodynamic efficiency, drag coefficients etc... I suspect that beyond the standard vehicle performance figures, the numbers'll be updated on your own file as you achieve them (or i hope so). But I suspect they'll keep the bars too for quick general overviews.
I mean look at sports management sims. you get all the specific stats etc for players... but usually, there's also bars for - for example- attack, defence, overall which for the most part is perfectly usefull for narrowing down from the totall list of individuals. it's once you're getting to individual players or position changes, or who's the most usefull for a certain tactic. same point'd apply here no doubt. except with cars obviously.
does that make any sense or was i just wittering?

I get what you say about bars. They have them in the 'Cars' games and other basic racing games like Ford Racing 3.
But on the trailers. It does indeed look gooooood...

The only thing I'm not excited about is the lack of cops. That was the best part of the previous few games. X3
But, regardless, the rest of the game looks absolutely wonderful.

After reading a bit more about the game, I'm suddenly not so impressed. From what I understand, they're moving completely away from street racing and instead making it about racing performance-tuned street cars on closed tracks.
In other words, it's Gran Turismo/Forza Motorsport.(although those include some professional racing too)

to be fair to them, the original underground didnt have a free roam element.
and in all honesty, even if that was there... given the car damage system... would you really want a dozen cop cars all slamming into your car? it'd both be very expensive to fix and youd be a LOT easier to catch since the damage WILL affect the performance/driving of the car propperly. crash at 150mph and your race is over. BIG time
