Well, that question assumes that
A) Cars give birth, which is just a theory (but there are, at least, children cars of some form, as seen during the last race, so it's worth considering even if you follow the "built" theory, which I tend to lean toward)
and B) Young cars can't drive as soon as they are born, or within a few hours of their birth.
If you do follow the birth theory, it would make sense for something built like a car to be able to move on its own within a few minutes. Most fast moving four legged (wheeled) animals can walk and even run within 10 or 20 minutes of birth. I personally don't think it makes any sense for an organism (I'm going to assume) like a car to be have the same physical and developmental characteristics as something as feeble as a human. I just can't see something that can travel at 150+MPH (depending on the vehicle) and be relatively impervious to losing a tire during a race having (physically) dependent infant.
If they did, however, a wee trailer makes the most sense. Something close to the body seems too difficult for mother or father's tires to reach.

I don't actually thing they cannonly have those parts, and in my first few fics that I wrote, they don't. In all the RPs that I've posted though I asked my "counterpart" before we wrote the first one and they said they preferred the "human anatomy" theory. Which I certainly don't mind writing, and a lot of the fics I have posted have been edited roleplays. But I totally don't think they were meant to be like that in the actual movie at all. I mean we've seen their undercarriages. Ain't nothin' there.

On their undercarriages? If that's the case, I'd hate for my mother to be a lowrider girl. XD

well pregnant cars would already have to exercise extra caution when they're pregnant and getting bigger towards the end... perhaps stick to paved or smooth roads where they know it's unlikely they'll run into trouble, for reasons of bottoming out or going into labor!

I have always concluded....they just dont. Plain and simple. Baby car has to learn the ropes on their own or their parents hire a tractor and trailer to haul 'em about. But I think my opinions branch from the Revved Forward RPGs :\
