Although I didn't come up with the "tuner = better senses" thing, one explanation I came up with is that tuners commonly install mods that suck more air into the engine, such as larger intakes, turbochargers, superchargers, etc.
But there are a lot of performance cars and race cars that come standard with that kind of equipment, so it isn't a flawless theory.

Fillmore's Nostrils are nothing. XD; If he were a Beetle, his 'nostrils' would be on top of his hood (which, in this case, is directly at the rear.)

Sally also has to breathe through her rear: The Maserati MC12 and Bugatti Veyron breath through their roofs(that's what those scoops are for):

woot woot the Carrera is from Ontario!
I think the disconcerting thing about the air intake theory is that people are offput by the air intake at the rear of the vehicle instead of the front, it breaks with our human preconceived notions of where the olfactory sense should be located (ie - the face or the front of the car). Otherwise, if you can move past that, the air intake is a perfect equivalent, making for a solid theory.
Sarah
EDIT: I just reread Tracker's comment about the Carrera... in this case I don't think smelling and breathing are 100% interchangable in theory... we can tell from the movie that cars DO breathe through their mouth. They just sense smells from somewhere else that isnt' their mouthes, their air intakes?

Now that I think about it...since there most likely is a link between the mouth and engine(or at least the engine compartment), it would still be possible for cars to breath from the front, through their mouth, even if they have rear- or mid-mounted engines.

Of course they smell. The grille is like huge nostrils. I suppose they would process smells in their intake systems. It's just like humans except without the snot.

lol car boogers O___o;
I guess they could smell just like we can, and some can smell better than others. That happens in some humans too. And maybe the same thing with taste. Maybe even some cars can be "supertasters" *shrugs*
Those are just ideas derived from my classes though. >___>;
