I think we can generally agree that the oil running out would be the automotive equivalent of the apocalypse unless they can get themselves "converted" to alternative fuel sources... but what do you think?
*shudders just thinking about the oil running out in real life and everyone being forced into über-slow hydrogen/solar cars or otherwise crammed like sardines into...public transport...before curling up in corner and crying*

Vegetable oil! Modern gasoline cars can run on it. There was an article in one science paper here about how some countries were growing hay to convert into oil. There is an alternative right there.

Doesn't Brazil already require all imported cars to run on corn-derived ethanol? And corn is one of their main agricultural products.
Then again, if ethanol is the cars equivalent of alcohol, then I'd imagine Carsverse Brazil to be a pretty weird place. XD

*imagines Fillmore dying and being reincarnated in Brazil* XD But seriously, Brazil has its very own oil-oil supply to fuel its own industry, while its cars all seem to use ethanol. Besides, you have to consider cars coming in from other countries.
We should also consider the economic consequences...such as the collapse of Dinoco or Pennziere.
On a side note, I can imagine 21st century greenies being those weird special-competition solar cars or Honda HCVs or super-gas-savers...always getting the short end of the stick from American SUVs. XD

I would think Tex, and by extension Dinoco, would be pretty forward-thinking in this regard -- not strictly in the "fossil fuels" business any more, but expanding and diversifying in anticipation of the Next Big Thing. Ditto for Pennzierre. Tex did not get where he is by being a dumb bunny in that regard! I think they would be looking at renewable/farmable fuel sources as hard as anybody, because they will have the economy of scale to produce such things in quantity once the need arises. A smart company would be keeping an interest in every likely option.
