i dont think so...maybe their for the same purpose that sally has that lil tailflap thing on her rear when she lifts it up to show her pinstriping. control themselves at high speed?

Actually those things are on every racecar. They prevent a racecar from flipping whenever they spin out. When the driver goes in reverse to try and regain control, they flap up to help keep the car on it's wheels.

Here's what Nascar.com says:
ROOF FLAPS:These flaps are sections at the rear of a race vehicle's roof that are designed to activate, or flip up, if the air pressure flowing across them decreases. In the case of a vehicle turning backwards, the tendency for an uninterrupted flow of air is to create lift. The roof flaps are designed to disrupt that airflow in attempt to keep the vehicle on the ground.
lol I love that darn glossary it has everything ;D

The King didn't seem to have them... is that why he "flew" through the air when Chick smacked into him?

I don't think they had them back in the 70's. The Plymouth Superbird was actually a very dangerous car when it came to high speeds, that's why Petty had to stop using it.

Well, also, remember Mater says "Git-R-Dun! I tought him that!" And MAter is talking about driving backwords. And to drive bakwords, you need rear-view mirrors. Thus, the "flaps" on Lightning are rear-veiw mirrors.

ehhh..then how can he see them? their on top of his head. plus i don't see no mirrors on those things their for controling themselves during high speed..such as protection from spinning out like da king

there's a risk of Nascars taking flight... in reverse? and who's to say there aren't mirrors on the other side of them.
also, the "flap" at the back of Sally is her spoiler. it's fixed, she doen't move it. Go look up Porsches.

Actually, the 911 Carrera S does have a hidden spoiler that only appears at highway speed. You can clearly see its outline in this pic(look around the grille): www.seriouswheels.com/pics-2005/2005-Porsche-911-Carrera-S-RS-1920x1440.jpgAnd here it is deployed: www.fast-autos.com/Assets/911carrera-spoiler.jpgSince Cars cars have total control over their bodies, it would make sense that Sally could raise or lower that spoiler whenever she wants.(she probably did involuntarily in that scene with lightning) If you see a 911 with a fixed spoiler, then it's probably the Turbo or GT version. And I've always been under the impression that rear-views acted as an extra set of eyes...if you think about it, most cars would be unable to actually look at their mirrors.
