When Lightning thinks the Peterbilt is Mack....i think the Inerstate was the other direction...but knowing McQueen....he was desperate to get to Cali.....

It was. However, consider Lightning's background. The track always leads back to the same point. Therefore, it is logical to him that the road should loop back around like a racetrack might.
