I just heard the Icelandic voiceover for Cars. I have lost count of how many times I have seen and heard the english version, so it came bit odd for me.
There is always one thing that happens when doing translation of any cartoon movie now, the names are Icelandicfied to some degree. Let's see if I can remember the names:
Lightning McQueen - Leiftur McQueen (Leiftur means 'flash', and the Mc part of McQueen is pronounced like the 'Ma' part in Mack)
Sally - Solla
Doc Hudson Hornet - Doksi Hudson Hornet (Quite self explanatory)
Mack - Mikki (the same name we give Mickey mouse)
Mater - Krókur (Means hook)
Sheriff - Löggi
Sarge - Þjálfi (I dont like it, though it may be sort for Liðþjálfi, which means Sergeant, it is used for any kind of trainer in general)
Fillmore - Friðmóður (Do me a favor and dont ask, though Frið means peace, I think they just put similar sounding word for the name)
Lizzie - Lísa
Red - Rauður
Guido - Guido (And they got an italian to do his voice)
Luigi - Luigi
Ramone - Ramón
Flo - Fjóla
Chick Hicks - Kalli Kaldi (Kalli is a bad subsitute for Chick, but I cant actually think of a better one. Kaldi means cool/cold)
Strip "The King" Weathers - Kóngurinn (No actual name given at all, just Kóngurinn)
Bob Cutlass - Hemmi Gunn (An actual talk and gameshow host in Iceland, and he did the voice)
Darrel Cartrip - Darri (I never got his last name, but this is an obvious deprative from Darrel Cartrip, like the Fillmore name)
If there is anyone I missed, let me know.
There is not just the names, there are few things that I missed from the english version. Many jokes disappeared, including the "Nice Butte" sticker, replaced by just "Radiator Springs" What really kicked me in the head was though some... odd stuff.
When Darrel and Bob go over the finalists in the first race, before the songs kicks back in, The king is called Volkswagen. It may though be from how we call cars here. SUVs, all SUVs are called Jeppar, which is from Jeeps. If you catch me talking about Jeeps, I may be talking about SUVs in general. One of the less used names is Fólksvagn, which is used for the smaller two wheel drive cars. But that is used very little nowadays.
Sally, or Solla, calls McQueen 'Nagli' instead of Stickers. That means in direct translation 'nail', but it is also used to describe hot males, or hothead males.
McQueen never calls Sally a Porsche.
When Sally admits being in love at the Wheel Well (had an Icelandic name, cant remember it at the moment), McQueen asks if it was a convertible.
What I was hoping though was to see if Laddi, the voice actor for Mater, would be able to pull off the redneck. He failed quite miserably. He did say in an interview that it was his first time doing a redneck voiceover, but still, it was badly done.
Any thoughts? Any questions? You also from a country which does voiceovers, and if you are, did you listen to the voiceover version?
