How do you make a Fanvideo?

How do you make a fanvideo? what program do you need to take parts from a movie? I want to make one but i really don't know how. If somebody would be nice enough to give me intstructions how to do that, i'll be happy.

If you have Windows Me, XP or Vista, you have a program called "Windows Movie Maker" in the accessories section of your Start/Programs menu. This is for editing your source videos after you got them from your DVD or the Net. There are some better video editing programs around, but they cost money. I use Adobe Premiere Pro.

To rip videos from my DVD, I normally use Magic DVD Ripper, but this program is not free. I know there are some free ones, but I don't remember what they are.
