Chapter 1
It had begun to rain again in Radiator Springs and it kept everyone inside their homes for the time being. Ebony rested by the fireplace, with her injured side facing toward the warm, crackling fire in the living room. There was a plethora of notes and books surrounding her in which she was keeping herself busy during the storm.
She had been injured in a street race a few days ago in a nearby city, which was miles away from her hometown, and Doc Hudson told her, after checking her out, that she needed to take it easy for a few weeks and let herself heal. No strenuous activities.
A soft, little bump on her fender roused Ebony from a unexpected catnap and she looked down to see her youngest son, Justin, who was now nine-years-old, looking up wih large, blue eyes at her.
"Mom?" Justin asked tentatively.
"Yes, Hon?" Ebony answered, trying not to show how much pain she was currently feeling from her injury... and from something else.
"What happened to you?" asked the little Viper, pointing to the side in which Ebony had facing the fire.
"I was injured in a road wreck," Ebony replied, "when I was street racing."
"Why do you street race?" asked Justin.
Ebony paused, debating whether or not she should tell Justin her reasons for street racing. She then decided to keep to the basics.
"I've been street racing all my life," she said, "I'm used to something like this."
"Does it hurt?" asked Justin, peering at the patch-up job.
"Sometimes," the black Viper answered, "and whenever I move too quickly and too much."
Justin appeared to be thinking as he studied Ebony's bandaged side. He had learned that when he was born, her mother had gone into a severe month-long relapse. Because of this revalation, Justin blamed himself for Ebony's pain.
"I don't like seeing you hurt, Mom," he said at last.
"I can't help it," replied Ebony, "It's an old habit--"
But she didn't get to finish what she wanted to say to Justin because the boy stormed off, angry... more at himself than at Ebony. It was always his fault that his mother was hurt or in pain or sick. It was what he believed anyway.
"Justin! Wait!" Ebony called out and quickly got to her tires to go after her son, but a sharp spasm of pain forced her back down on her couch cushion in front of the fire. She shuddered, gasping at the ache now spreading through her body.
Idiot. Don't do that, Ebony told herself silently.
Ebony closed her eyes, tears threatening to flow forth. She had tried to be a good mother and the start that she had had with Maven and Krill was, she thought, successful. The twins wre now teenagers, fourteen, and she had provided them with all that they had needed to grow up.
But Justin was a different story. He seemed to be giving her problems. Too much strain for her, physically and emotionally. She really wasn't prepared to deal with Justin's behavior. Why was he acting like this?
Ebony sighed deeply, truly not knowing what to do in this kind of situation. Her side hurt from the sudden and unexpected exertion.
"Hey, Mom? Are you okay?"
The question startled Ebony, but she recognized the voice and the scent. Her daughter, Maven, who was learning magic from Tempest.
"Maven..." Ebony sighed, "Drop the invisibility spell, will you? That messes with my senses."
"Sorry, Mom," Maven became visible again, pulling up beside her mother and sounding a little apologetic, "I was watching and listening to the entire thing. Are you feeling alright?"
"Besides the usual ache from my injury," Ebony replied, glancing at Maven, "Not too well."
"Is it about Justin?" asked Maven.
Maven, in sharp contrast with her mother, had filled out some over the years as she grew older. She wasn't as big as Ebony yet, but only three-fourths her mother's size. She was, however, starting to acquire the features of an adult Viper, but was a long ways off of becoming one. That required about five or six more years of growing.
"I don't know what it is about Justin," said Ebony sadly, "One moment he's curious and the next he's angry. I just can't figure him out."
Maven snuggled up against Ebony's uninjured side, having retained that habit from infancy, reassuring her mother that she was there. She listened to the rain outside for a moment, thinking.
"I really don't have any clear idea what's wrong with him," Maven admitted, "but have you tried talking to him?"
"I try, but it just doesn't seem to work," answered Ebony.
The violet Viper looked down, "Sorry, I'm at a loss at what to do, Mom."
"It's okay," Ebony smiled a bit, "Thanks anyway, Mave. I know you mean well and it feels nice to have, at least, your support in this." She winced as another spasm of pain shot through her body.
Maven was still a novice in magic and hadn't completely mastered all of the spells yet, but she knew of the basic ones that would be useful in everyday situations. She got up and went over to her mother's unjured side.
"Capio (take) absens (away) poena (pain)," Maven chanted an anti-pain spell in Latin as she pressed her antenna gently against Ebony's side.
It took only thirty seconds for Ebony to feel the pain in her side ebb away. Now she could breathe a little easier. She looked over at her daughter.
"Thanks," she smiled at Maven, "It's a good thing I have a daughter who's magic-sensative."
"Mom, the spell only lasts for six hours," Maven explained, "Where's your meds?"
"I... misplaced them," Ebony admitted, feeling just a little bit guilty, "I can be so forgetful sometimes."
"No you're not," replied Maven, "I'll go find them for you. Why don't you just rest by the fire for now and if you need anything, I'll do it for you, okay?"
Ebony smiled as she relaxed on her cushion, "That's really nice of you, Maven. Since it's raining, I might as well take the opportunity to get some sleep."
Maven got up quietly, letting her mother sleep, and went about her errands. She reached with her magic, probing for the bottle within which held Ebony's medication to more effectively dull the pain than a mere magic spell can.
I alread know of Mom's medical condition, the Viper girl thought as she moved silently through the hallway, so I need to find her meds before that anti-pain spell wears off.
She passed by Justin's room and paused for a few minutes, wondering whether or not she should talk to her little brother about his behavior. It would help her understand what's going on with him. But what if he resists? Maven wasn't completely sure what to do and she really didn't want to use her magic to force him to do anything that he didn't want to do. What can she do?
Hey, I think I found it, thought Maven as she felt her magic catch on something small, yet solid enough for her to know what it might be. The bottle of medication that belonged to her mother.
Retreiving the bottle from underneath the nightstand in Ebony's room, Maven returned to her mother's side in the living room by the fireplace. She set the bottle down on the coffeetable that was nearby and snuggled up against Ebony like a kitten, listening to the rain that was still pouring outside.
Just as well that this rainstorm is keeping her inside, Maven thought, Mom's been pushing herself way past her limits ever since Grandma Mel passed away that she's getting herself hurt. I'm a little bit worried for her.
Grandma Mel was the nickname that the twins and Justin had given to Melody, seeing as they were related to her through Ebony. When Melody died of engine corrosion, Ebony was devastated and didn't know how to deal with something so serious as the death of a loved one.
Ebony only had about fifteen years to form a relationship with her mother before losing Melody to that terrible, incurable illness. Maven had watched her mother become sick with grief, but the young Viper girl had no idea how to correctly comfort Ebony, except to be close to her, letting her know that she was there for her.
Maven watched Ebony breathe as she slept and wondered what her mother was dreaming about. She had heard storied of a car named Ryder, who had saved her mother's life once by sacrificing his own. Maybe that's who Ebony was dreaming about now.
Ebony had never been the oneto express what she was feeling to anybody, so that made it difficult for her friends and family to figure out what was wrong with her. Maven was, however, trying her hardest with magic probes to find out, but she kept hitting dead ends.
Mom, I know you're hurting, Maven thought, touching her mother's fender lightly, but how can I, or anyone else for that matter, help you when you don't even want to open up?
Maven was in a dilemma. She wanted so badly to help her mother through these most difficult times in her life, but she had no idea how she can go about doing that without invading her mother's privacy.
The young Viper was thinking as she rested against Ebony's side. What should I do?
