Korean Beauty: Fast & Dangerous
Adrian was a 1994 model Rover 214Si. One of the ones with the black radiator-grille. He had white paint-work above the typical grey plastic on the bottom half. Though he liked to race; or even just drive fast; he never considered himself as one of the “tuner” or street racing crowd. His 102 BHP K-Series was still completely standard, as was his Bodywork. He was also generally seen as being pretty uncool. He didn’t care though. Firstly, he didn’t particularly want to be considered cool by those who were vocal about the matter, and secondly because he knew that he could out-handle any of those chavved up Corsas or Saxos and the like. He figured he probably had more power too, since he knew that most of them just had their bodywork “improved” and at best had trick exhausts. All noise, no go. He knew he didn’t have a lot of power, but he knew how to use what little he did have.
For the last few weeks, Adrian had been just kicking back and relaxing, just driving around the country, taking in scenery and the like.
On one evening however, as he drove along a winding lakeside forest road, he was overtaken by the hottest import girl he had ever seen. She was a turquoise blue and candy-silver 2005 model Hyundai Coupe. As attractive as any stock Hyundai Coupe girl would be, this girl had the most perfectly suited and beautiful body-kit. In silhouette, she could have passed for a particularly alluring racecar. This Korean beauty’s panels weren’t adorned with anything so crass as sponsor vinyls as would be found on a racecar. Pink and white cherry-blossoms being swirled gently about on a soft breeze, and an ornate bird of some kind perched on the branch is what was depicted in her vinyl. Were Adrian have been able to see closer of course, he would have realised that the blossoms were in-fact Korean writing, and that the bird’s eye contained a small Korean flag centrepiece.
After a few dumbstruck moments, Adrian hurried to catch up to the Hyundai, who just accelerated slightly faster just as he started to draw level. Again catching up, and again until it was as much as Adrian could do to keep up. After about a mile and a half of this, the mysterious, beautiful Hyundai just accelerated away, pulling ahead as though Adrian had been standing still. Hitting his brakes now, Adrian knew with that that the oriental beauty had just been toying with him.
For a few days, Adrian stayed around that area, just enjoying the windy, scenic roads – as well as hoping to see that Hyundai girl again.
As he filled up at a nice place atop the hill that overlooked the lake, he heard and felt a faint rhythmic “thoom, thoom, thoom”. He knew all too well what his meant; Chav tuners.
The first to pass was a Saxo; a candy yellow guy that looked like a lemon with bits sticking out with the ridiculous bodykit; the spoiler more like a surfboard. Next came a Vauxhall Cavalier. This one was done up in an almost laughable attempt at a VX Racing look. This was followed by anther Vauxhall. A bright candy pink Corsa girl. Apart from the pinkness and overall fact that she was a Corsa, she would have looked sort of cute. Maybe were she a Mazda MX-5 for example. Fourth to fly past was a third Vauxhall. A Nova. One seeming to try and look like Lightning McQueen even. Adrian audibly groaned, to the mild amusement of the attendant whom he’d been talking with. “Not a fan of the American racing series’ or not a fan of their ilk?” the faded green MGB who was parked next to Adrian asked with a held-back chuckle. “Well, more their type. Don’t overly follow American racing. Just driving in big circles… anyone can do that. Sort of surprised myself I recognise the pain job on that guy.” Adrian shrugged, then leaned across some to jokingly whisper the next bit; “I don’t know if anyone told him, but… he’s still a Nova.” He added with a chuckle, not really noticing the red Escort XR3i pass too.
After his dinner and a little longer spent chatting with the old sports car, Adrian headed back to the inn he’d been stopping at for the night, taking the drive to try himself along that stretch of road where he’d been left standing by the Korean beauty several days earlier, trying to find more speed into or out of corners or better lines through them. He knew if he saw her here again – or anywhere else for that matter – that he couldn’t compete for power, but his handling was very, very good, and he figured he might keep up better if he can find better, quicker and faster lines.
As he reached the inn, Adrian stopped in his tracks at a sound. Keeping still so as to listen better, and as the sound got closer, the young Rover knew that the sound was a Lamborghini V10. It had to be her… the Hyundai. Not having anywhere to back in to turn round, he backed up a bit and flicked himself round in a J-turn or a reverse 180 flick as others call it. Scant seconds later, as expected, a blur of turquoise and silver howled past in a bellowing V10 wail. Tearing after the Korean beauty, trying his best to keep himself composed to take the optimum lines as he’d been practicing, Adrian did find himself just about keeping pace. As they drove, the Coupe girl was clearly not really stretching herself at-all; but Adrian was pushing himself right to the limit of his abilities, his engine almost in pain he was pushing so hard.
As they came to the lake, they caught up to the gang of chavvy ricers. “Oh no…” Adrian muttered to himself under his – slightly ragged by now – breath. As his “friend” zipped past them, he watched where and how they moved. With resolve, the Rover dodged, dipped, ducked and dived past the four he had noticed before; but as he moved to slip back into the right position for the next corner, he noticed almost too late the fifth member, almost hitting an outcropped rock as he dodged the Escort. The close call did seem to have one positive effect though… That elusive and beautiful Korean started to slow down to drop along side him. As Adrian watched her get closer however, something went wrong. Or more accurately, something wrong was done. He was rammed. The Escort at the lead of the gang of ricers had sped up to him, and rammed into his back end at the side. In an instant, Adrian cursed the boom in popularity of NASCAR. He knew that would be how someone like this XR3 would know where to ram him to spin him out.
For a good few seconds, the young Rover held it, and, when his back flicked round to the other side after a slight bump, he would still have been okay… except that flick put his front wheels in the slippery mud at the outside of the road, which caused him to lose control, shooting across the road, his front right tyre exploding as he his a rock, which sent him flying through the fence into the water of the lake. The last thing he saw and heard was the Hyundai Coupe skidding to a stop on the grass bank, sounding quite concerned. Though she spoke in Korean – or so Adrian Assumed – so he didn’t know what was said before everything went dark.
