After our old home CFU burned down, I decided to repost my first fic in our new home: HH
:-)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disclaimer: The story is based on the movie Cars that is owned by Disney and Pixar studios. I do not own any of their ideas.
Notes: This is my first fan fic.
The following story takes place about 5 years after Lightning pushed Strip over the finish line. Radiator Springs has grown quite a bit and now houses around 300 cars.
The Big Question
Tabitha, a young 5-year-old Chevrolet was driving along route 66. Her parents had moved to Radiator springs just over 2 years ago and she could go play near the Butte as long as Sheriff or Doc were watching over her. She was on her way there together with Sheriff.
“Sheriff?”, “Yes, Tabitha?” Sheriff said half listening as he was watching some cars pass by that looked similar to The Delinquent Road Hazards. “Where do baby cars come from?”, “Big cities usually, but you don’t have to be afraid. I have a neck for chasing them down and throwing them in the impound”. Tabitha gave a puzzled look and Sheriff realized he had misheard her question: “oh, eh, you didn’t mean shady cars?”. Tabitha shook her hood and started to try and circle around Sheriff. “Chase me!”. And off she sped towards the butte. Sheriff playfully followed her, but not too quickly as to give her a chance.
After having arrived at Willy’s Butte Tabitha started to play with her friends. However the question of where baby cars come from started to nag her really hard. She was afraid to ask her friends at the risk of sounding silly. So she decided to keep it to herself. Some of the games they played involved racing and especially watching the grown-up cars race, because they were their ultimate goal of defeating. At around noon the main star of these races showed up, it was none other than Lightning McQueen. He had learned quite a few tricks over the years from Doc and he didn’t keep them to himself and had decided to teach the youngsters as well.
“Hey racers!”, “Hi Lightning!” the young cars responded. “Have you been practicing the dirt-slide I taught you last week?”, and almost in sync they responded, “You bet ya we did!”. - You guys actually practice to be racers - Lightning thought to himself, - unlike Chick Hicks… -. “Well then, show me what you all can do!” and off the young cars went, about 7 in all. Some of them were better at sliding than others, but all of them managed to at least get some dirt up into the air. Tabitha managed to slide as well, but more often than not over-steered and ended up making 360s. At one time when Tabitha made a 540 one of her friends, Ron, joked: “Look out everyone, Tornado Tabitha is making another pass through Radiator Springs!”. It wasn’t meant to be mean, but nonetheless it made Tabitha want to make Ron sting like a beatle, they were near the edge after all ;-). Luckily Ron made a mistake as well and bumped into Lightning. Tabitha wanted to yell to him that he took after Chick Hicks, but was silenced by Mater’s sudden arrival: “Sheeeeeeeeeooooooot!! ‘Y’low fella’s!…” At that moment Mater saw the young cars slide and he got a smile from one sideview mirror to the other. “Yeeeeaa Lightning!! Y’are teachin’ th’m for pranks on Frank?” Mater asked with what could be described as shear undeniable hope in his eyes. “No, and don’t give them any ideas. If something went wrong they would not be fast or strong enough to get away from Frank.”. Mater nodded with a slight look of disappointment. After an hour Lightning’s lesson was over and Tabitha drove up to Lightning asking him if she could speak with him under 4 headlights, or rather 2 headlights and 2 stickers (I don’t know an English expression for talking in private, so you’re getting a variation of a Dutch expression ^^).
Lightning agreed and they drove to out of hearing range of the other cars. Tabitha looked towards her racing-hero questioningly and asked: “Can you tell me where baby cars come from?”. Lightning was a bit startled by this. He was thinking of telling her she was too young to know or to send her to her parents. But he decided for the old story of the Airbus bringing baby cars to happy expectant parents: “Well, Tabitha, there are these Airb…” and before he could finish his sentence Tabitha interrupted agitated: “Hmmpf, not THAT story, I know that it is not true!”. This was not really what Lightning was hoping for, definitely not. – It’s not my job to explain this stuff to her, is it? – He thought to himself. He felt that it would be better for it to be explained by someone with more experience, and older and ‘wiser’ person… in short he thought this to be the perfect opportunity to shove this into Doc’s tires. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking. You seem genuinely interested in the true story. For that you will have to go to Doc Hudson, he is great at explaining this type of thing.”. “Ok, thank you Lightning. I’ll go ask Doc” Tabitha smiled again. She was nearly shaking from curiosity and wanted to get back to town as quickly as possible.
When it was possible she snuck out from under the watchful eye of Sheriff who was supposed to keep an eye on all the young cars. As she drove down to Radiator Springs she came across Fillmore. He greeted her with a strong air of organic fuel around him: “Heeey, Tabitha. What are you doing out here alone?” Tabitha stopped, - Fillmore is a grown car, he must know it… -: “Hi Fillmore, I’m just going to Doc, but maybe you can help me.”, “With what?” Fillmore said, “Well, do you know where baby cars come from?”. His eyes grew wider: “Don’t believe what anyone tells you. It’s a government conspiracy man… There’s this company called Pixar that thought us all up, man. We’re nothing but figments of the imagination of organisms in a world where cars are not alive.” – he’s obviously out of it – Tabitha thought sadly. She decided to cut his rantings short with a quick “ThankyouFilmore, butIrealiseIreallygottagonow.” And off she went to Doc Hudson.
Finally arriving at Doc’s she asked him the big question and instead of being redirected or fed some weird story, Doc looked at her understandingly. Taking her question to engine he started to explain: “Tabitha, baby cars….”
