Chapter One- Daddy's Little Girl...Kinda
I wasn’t looking forward to today at all. Today was the day when my father was going to take away what little life I had left and run over it repeatedly. I was to be made an honorary cop, that’s right those wonderful cars that everyone likes to meet on the highways when their speeding. I mean if someone's going to arrest me they could be more fashionable, could they have thought of any other colors? I mean black and white what is this the 50’s, maybe bring in a little color please! Anyways if you’re wondering what the heck I’m talking about then I’ll tell.
May 13, 1987….
“Alright Vanessa, today is your tenth birthday, your entering the double digit years now! With this comes great responsibility, now you only have eight years to prepare for your future!” a police car told a young pink mustang. The little car looked up at him with confusion.
“Don’t give me that look! You’re a Wilder, Vanessa, us Wilder’s have been police officer since my great grandfather moved to this country from France! Your destiny has been set out for you, you will never have to worry about what occupation you will have when you grow up!” he told her.
“Daddy…” little Vanessa said looking up at her father.
“Yes?” he asked her.
“Can I open my presents now?” she asked with an innocent look.
Yup, see I’ve been hearing that for the past twelve years and now it was finally time for me suffer. I don’t want to be a cop more then that guy in Dr. Seuss wants green eggs and ham, even so Sam I Am still pursues him just like my dad has done to me. Anyways, today’s my 19th birthday it just so happens and I was waiting impatiently for what my father had in store for me today.
9 A.M. that morning….
Vanessa was waiting in the office of her father. She looked around at all the awards and degrees he had on his wall and the pictures of friends and family sitting on his desk. One picture in particular caught her eye and it was one of her when she was six. “Simpler happy times…” she thought with a sigh. All of a sudden she heard the door open and she turned her attention to it. In the doorway stood her father and two brothers, Collin and Tyler who also where police men, big shock there! (Hope you caught my sarcasm)
“Are you ready Nessa?” Collin asked. Collin had brilliant blue eyes and was small for an adult car; he had always been and was even made fun of in high school for it. Of course they stopped making fun of him when he became a cop.
“Yeah come on aren’t you excited?” Tyler asked. Tyler was the oldest; he was well built and strong and had shinning green eyes. He was the total opposite if his younger brother, everyone had adored Tyler in high school and he had his fair share of girlfriends.
Vanessa gave her older brother a blank look, “No, why would I want to rush the end of my life?” she asked darkly.
“Now come on Vanessa we’ve had a talk about this already!” her father said in a warning tone.
Vanessa sighed and drove over to the door reluctantly and followed her brothers and father out of the building.
Outside….
“Where exactly are we going?” Vanessa asked. “I have to meet up with Cara in town in an hour.”
“Don’t worry this won’t take long,” her father answered. Vanessa sighed again and looked around for signs of where she was headed. Vanessa and her family didn’t live in a large city no, they lived in a small town that had the population of about two hundred that’s including the children. This meant that everyone knew each other and that there was only so many places in town you could go. Vanessa let out a gasp as she realized where she was headed. She immediately slammed on her brakes and slowly started to back up.
“Dad! She’s trying to escape!” Tyler reported as he glanced back at his sister.
“Go get her boys!” they’re father commanded.
Tyler and Collin left their father's side and surrounded their sister. Vanessa frowned and glared at her older brothers.
“Tattle tail,” she told Tyler.
“Just come on Vanessa stop trying to avoid it!” Collin said.
“Just think of how pretty you’ll look,” Tyler said with a smile.
“I’m going to look like a tin can,” she told her brothers.
Her father drove up to her and sent her a glare that would have frozen even the most dangerous criminal. Vanessa whimpered and continued along.
“Alex!” a car said with a welcoming voice as Vanessa, her father and brothers entered the body shop.
“Ted, nice to see you again!” Vanessa’s father said greeting a green pick-up truck at the counter.
“How’s the city look today?” Ted asked him.
“Good, like always, but then criminals know to stay away from me,” Alex said with a laugh. This had more truth to it then you would think. Alex P. Wilder had put more criminals away in the slammer then your can count.
Ted laughed and greeted Tyler and Collin who responded with a nod, then he spotted Vanessa.. “Well….well is that little Nessa?” he asked. Vanessa rolled her eyes, “He saw me last week…why does he always have to do this?” she asked herself.
“You bet it is, and you know why she’s here don’t you?” Alex asked.
“Of course, you made the appointment months ago, so are you ready Vanessa?” Ted asked her.
Vanessa gave him a ambiguous look and she smiled nervously. “Well come on back to the garage then.”
Vanessa reluctantly followed the pick-up through the back door and into the garage.
That had to have been the worst hour of my life. They worked on me and worked on me and I didn’t even get to see what they were doing or what I even looked like. For all I knew I looked like my father! I shudder at the thought really, of anything I didn’t want to be like my father, my father and I were complete opposites. He loved our little small town, I hated it. I liked acting and he hated it. Then when they were finished with me I got the surprise of my life.
“Ok….” Ted said. “Ladies and gentlemen I now present to you, Vanessa Margaux Wilder, officer of the law!" he announced.
Collin, Tyler and Alex turned there attention to Vanessa. Her pink glossy paint was gone, and was replaced with the nostalgic black and white colors of a police car. A siren was attached to her hood and her once slim body was now more boxed shape but still slim and feminine. One her sides was written Cibolo County Police in big blue letters. Vanessa had refused to look at her family’s expressions and had kept her eyes close up till now.
“Nessa you look great!” Tyler said with a smile.
“Yeah you look good in black in white, welcome to the force little sis,” Collin said.
Vanessa gulped and opened her eyes. Her brothers were smiling along with their father who hadn’t looked this proud since Collin became a cop.
“Why don’t you take a look honey?” Alex asked his daughter proudly.
Vanessa slowly drove over to the mirror on the other side of the room and when she reached it her blue eye’s dilated and her mouth hung open.
“You think she likes it?” Collin whispered to Tyler.
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” Vanessa screamed horrified as she leapt back from the mirror.
“No,” Tyler said with a nervous laugh.
“Enh,” Vanessa whimpered sadly as she looked at herself, turning around in circles.
“Vanessa what’s a matter?” Alex asked as he drove over to his daughter.
“Look at me!” She yelled. “I look nothing like me, I look like a...I’ll never get into Hollywood like this!”
Alex sighed and shook his head. “Your never going to get into Hollywood because your going to spend the rest of your life here in Cibolo!” he said staring her in the eyes.
Vanessa sighed and looked down at the floor avoiding her father’s glare. “I’m sorry I just blurted it out...” she said.
“I know...” Alex said. “Well come on I have to get you ready for your first assignment!”
“What? But I have to meet Cara and I still have to call Rico and...” Vanessa started.
“Your an officer now Vanessa! You can’t worry yourself with things like that right now, you can worry about it on your break and when your off duty!” Alex told her sternly.
“Come on Nessa, we’ll help you,” Collin offered.
“No you two get back on duty! We can’t leave the city unguarded!” Alex ordered. He could do that after all he was the sheriff.
“Yes sir!” the two brothers said as they turned and left.
My father took me back to his office and ordered me to “observe” him until an assignment suitable for me popped up. Of course everyone that did he gave to Collin and Tyler. Hours passed and soon night had come upon Cibolo, while I half asleep stared at my dad as he read some report about the Clemens brothers. They were the most wanted criminal’s throughout the southern states of New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana. They had robbed banks, broken into offices and homes, sent towns on fire and driven people off the highway. And out of every cop, my father was determined to catch them ever since they paid Cibolo a visit two years ago, a visit that caused the life of someone very dear to him. My mother’s. My father loved my mother more then he loved the law, which was a lot! He refused to speak for a month in memory of her death, I remember the day just as much as he does and even though he told us not to grieve over her I know he did. I heard him cry at night, and I heard my brothers and I cried too. After all she was my mother the only other girl in the family, we were so close, she was my best friend, sometimes I even called her by her first name, Cristina. Now after he heard of another life lost in New Mexico, he wanted to catch them even more! I thought that the rest of the night was going to be quiet but I was wrong, my entire life was about to change.
“Dad! Dad!” Tyler yelled over the radio.
“What is it son?” Alex asked.
“There’s a suspicious guys just around town, they’ve been circling for some time now do you want us to do check him out?” Tyler asked.
“No.” Alex responded.
“NO?” Tyler asked shocked.
“I’m going to send Nessa, you stay out of it!” Alex ordered. Vanessa was shocked to hear her name and she leapt out of the semi-sleep she was in and looked over at her father. “You heard me, now get!”
“But dad I...” Vanessa started.
“Come on! Your an officer now, we’ve trained you well you know what to do!” Alex said.
Vanessa groaned, “But dad it’s nighttime...I’m tired...can’t you just send Tyler?”
“No missy! An officer never sleeps now go!” he snapped. Vanessa reluctantly drove out of her father’s office and headed over to where her brother was.
“Where is he?” Vanessa asked her brother as she drove up to him.
“He moved over there,” Tyler said looking to the left. “Do you want me to go with you?” he asked.
“No way, I'll handle it,” Vanessa said. “Or not handle it,” she thought with a smirk.
Yeah that’s right I planned to screw this up big time. I planned to let the guy go and mess up completely do everything wrong. This way my dad would see what a horrible cop I made and would let me go off to Hollywood and become the actress I was meant to be.
Vanessa drove out into the dark countryside, her brother watching her nervously, waiting to pounce after her at any second he thought she was in danger. Vanessa spotted a car off in the distance, he had his head lights down really low and seemed to be pacing back and forth waiting for something anxiously.
“Let’s see, what should I do first? Scream at him or sneak up on him?” she thought with an evil laugh. Unfortunately for her she was spotted by the car before she could do anything.
“Hey!” it yelled in a gruff voice. “Who are you?” he asked.
“Unh...” Vanessa stammered. The car turned and shone his brights on her, he gasped seeing she was a police officer.
“Your a cop!” he growled.
“Um...heh...heh..., well unh...your under arrest!” she blurted out.
“For what? I didn’t do anything,” the car said.
“Oh yeah?” Vanessa asked turning her headlights on. What she was a large black and red ford truck who was squinting his brown eyes.
“You better get out of here before you get hurt little girl,” the truck warned her.
“Excuse me..wait... little? You really think so? I have been on a diet, teen magazine said it was best way to keep slim...” Vanessa told him.
The truck gave her a confused look and then narrowed his eyes at her. “What kind of cop are you?” he asked.
“Unh...well...” Vanessa said. All of a sudden she heard another police car’s sirens. It was her brother, who thought she was taking to long and went in after her. “Tyler?” she asked seeing his red and blue lights flashing in the distance.
“You got back up? This whole thing was to stall me wasn’t it?” the truck asked angrily.
“No!” Vanessa said.
“Forget this!” he yelled as she turn and sped off.
“Hey! Get back here!” Vanessa yelled as she drove after him.
By the time Tyler got there Vanessa was gone. “Where the heck did she go? Vanessa! Vanessa!” he called for his sister.
I must have chased that truck for like an hour before I realized I hadn’t even turned my siren on. Once I did though he pretty much freaked out and tried to lose me. That’s when he led me into some other town that I’ve never heard of before in my life. Anyways, I caught up to him half way through the town and ran him to the side of the road.
“You! You are very bad!” Vanessa yelled over her siren. “You know how long it too me to re-align my tires today and now they’re messed up!”
“You can turn your siren off now stupid!” the truck yelled at her.
“Right...” Vanessa said as she flipped her siren off. “Hey don’t call me stupid buddy I’ll use that against you in court!”
“I don’t even know why I’m afraid of you, I could leave right now and I could get away!” the truck said.
“Oh no buddy, your not going any...” Vanessa paused. “Wait, if I let this dangerous criminal go Dad will definitely kick me off the team and let me live my life...”
“Oh...ow my axel...” Vanessa said as lowered herself to the ground and pretended to cry in pain.
The truck gave her a confused look.
“Oh the agony why would you do such a thing to a woman, officer down!” Vanessa yelled.
All of a sudden there was the sound of another siren and the truck backed up. He looked down at Vanessa and then drove off out of the town and into the night. Vanessa watched and smirked, laughing on the inside.
“Young lady are you alright?” she heard a voice asked.
“Huh?” Vanessa asked as she turned around to see another police officer. He was much older then her, around her father’s age and had an older body model something from the 50’s. “Unh...heh.” she laughed nervously.
“You said you were hurt, did that hot-rodder do something to you?” he asked.
“Oh that...well...um...” Vanessa stammered.
“What is going on?” another voice asked.
Vanessa looked to see a blue Hudson Hornet drive up next to the police officer. “Great...” Vanessa thought.
“This young lady was chasing after some criminal and she’s injured herself,” the police officer explained.
The Hudson Hornet looked down at her suspiciously.
“Um...you know what it’s not that bad really, I can make it home thanks though, sorry for waking you um, I better get going...”Vanessa said nervously as she rose to her tires and turned to leave.
“Aren’t you kind of young to be an officer?” the police officer asked her.
“Well...” Vanessa paused. “My father is the sheriff so I kinda have to be cop...anyways though I gotta get going...”
“Wait a minute what’s your name miss?” The Hudson Hornet asked.
Vanessa turned around and faced the two cars. “Vanessa Wilder.” she answered.
“She’s a Wilder?” The truck hadn’t left the town like Vanessa had thought. He was watching her and the other cars from behind one of the stores in town. The truck laughed evilly, “Oh how perfect.” he said. The truck drove around the front of the store were a few large containers of gasoline where. He nudged them with his front tire and they began to tip.
“Look out!” the police officer yelled as he saw the containers tip.
“What are you...” Vanessa finished her sentence with a gasp of pain. One of the containers fell on her and the others rolled by.
“Hey you!” the Hudson Hornet yelled spotting the truck. The truck turned and sped off towards the exit of the town while the police officer drove over to Vanessa’s side.
