"We have made some inquiries of GM and its main lines." Zoe admitted, and she made no effort to either confirm or deny the "meddling" part. "If these people are the ones resonsible for the satellite malfunctions, and this is blowback from GM's past actions, they are going to have to come clean on it at some point. It will do them far less damage in the long run."
"Uh-huh." Amara had similar experiences. "Lewis knows that. He's a smart guy, and his mother brought him up right."
"I hope that something constructive comes out of it." Lionel stepped away from the window.

"Yeah, but who wants to own up to terrorists?" Matthew said. "And admit that the terrorists had some reasons that people can sympathize with, such as the Arrows. Who have a considerable influence and good public opinion among the blue-collars."
Christine smiled thinly. "Yeah, and pretty much everyone knows how painfully shy he is around me. Even if we did start something, even scent would not convince helicopters and airplanes."
"It has to." Helen chuckled. "If not, it's bad press."

"And GM has its own working-class element to answer to." Zoe said. "Whether they like it or not, SOMEBODY with sufficient pull or emotional resonance will go on the warpath at some point and it'll snowball into something beyond managing for anyone. In that case, the damage could be irreparable, and serve no one's interest. They could head that off by taking their bitter medicine now."
Amara sighed. "You still have a chance. I'm too far gone for it now."
"So, what to do for lunch?" Lionel looked around. "Enough serious talk for now."

Matthew sighed. "And I hoped I wouldn't live through such major political turmoil. Makes living more difficult." He said. In fact, the reason for why his kind of power was rare was because very few reached high enough age to be known in user circles. And no one was around to school them. Thus Matthew was a bit of an oddity for reaching his age.
Christine was hurt and bent down to her level and breathed gently on her. "Well, you are going into new seas, where you can meet more fishes."
"Something called skyr. Some dairy product of some kind." Helen shrugged. "You go ahead, I'll have to see these two guys off."

"We've been through it already." Zoe said. "The Malton riots. I don't want to see something of the like happening with cars this time."
"Thanks for the thought." Amara raised her head and brushed Christine's nose. "Well, I've got to be off again. See you again later."
"OK, seeya." Lionel waved. He had to wonder, was this Skyr locally made or did they bring that in from somewhere?

"And hopefully not now." Matthew said. "Last time I knew, we're still trying to figure out who hired the tail who attacked Ursa and Harold. Whoever that is, want's the cause to be buried and forgotten with them."
Gates stared at the yogurt-like white substance that dared him to eat it. With low-fat milk added but defeated by few tablespoons of cream and sugar, it looked like breakfast rather than lunch.
I will not be bested by foreign food. He thought, reminding himself that the only thing foreign in it was the recipe. He noticed Lionel entering and waved to him.
"Remember Amara." Christine said before she left. "Get Lionel, his tail, and mutual friend to come here. I got some claiming to do before she gets her wingtips on him." She smirked. It wasn't really the best thing to say at the moment, but she was a bit afraid that because of the discussion they had, Amara could forget the plan about Lewis' tail.

Maybe the same fine folks who gave Susan such a hard time, Zoe restrained herself from taking on a scowl. "Again, we can't discount the possibility of factions warring against each other in the organization."
Lionel took a bowl of skyr and topped it with blackberries. "Looks like yogurt." He sat down and took a spoonful. "Not bad."
"I will." Amara grinned cheekily as she taxiied out. "Might even be his mom, who knows?"

"And I wonder that when all this blows up, it's going to be a perfect example for the Streisand Effect." Matthew said. "We already got one part of the equation for so, someone desperately wants some information buried. When the info gets out, and the fact someone may have tried to kill someone to keep it secret, it will never be secret again. Unless people think the info is not catching enough to make them think about which twin knocked up the married woman in the soap opera, then it could be buried with no dignity about it."
Christine looked after her and then retreated back to the hangar. What she had said had an effect, but she was determined not to let it affect her. It was better to let Amara have the last word, since it looked like it had cheered her up.
I may have some problems going on now, but that doesn't mean that the others have frozen in the tracks. She thought and went to check her messages.
Gates considered himself defeated and had some. Regardless of how he felt about it, he didn't say anything. "So, Miles gone under the covers now?" He asked.

"A good emotional hook would do it." Zoe said. "It's like a tinder-dry forest that only needs a spark to become a full-blown conflagration. If not managed carefully, a lot of people could be burned, and not just the guilty ones."
"'Fraid so." Lionel sighed. "Kinda leaves us hanging, doesn't it? We're gonna be stuck with the trainees that cleared the health check."

"Off the records, who do you think that's guilty?" Matthew asked. The precarious history of her line along with the notion that history had repeated itself so soon after was enough to make most wonder if Zoe could handle this case. Though nothing had gone past the Council about getting Zoe away from the case, it was mostly because most of them ignored what happened outside of user circles.
"Just you and me that can handle the Crew duties now." Gates said. "Helen has too much to do. Not many doctors around here to begin with. We were even lucky to have her to begin with."

Zoe, reading the lines between Matthew's words, met his eyes with a level gaze. He happened to have the same first name as her recently departed grandfather. "I am not going to fling accusations around. That's for the others to decide. I'm here to find out what's really going on, even if it seems that the sideshow has become the main event in this case."
"Which means that we'll have to work all the harder to bring the best newbies up to speed." Lionel spooned a blackberry and a dollop of skyr into his mouth. "Dorothy is ready, and the healthy ones will need something to take their minds off the craziness."

"Good." Matthew just smiled, even if it annoyed most people. Or he just had that kind of face. "Remember the invitation to interrogate Ursa? Take it. We'll even provide you with enough space for you to be in your natural form."
"So the human flights ban has been lifted?" Gates asked. "I was afraid we would have to get the newbies into the five-mile runs."

"As long as all have been cleared and are on antivirals." Lionel said. "Just got the memo."
"I guess I will." Zoe said. "And I promise, I will be a very good girl."

"Good." Gates said. "I get headaches when running for too long."
Matthew chuckled and collected the scent tags. "Mind if we take the plush as well?" He asked Zoe.

"As long as we get it back at some point." Zoe said. "We still need it for our own investigations."
"And Dorothy is just as anxious to get started." Lionel smiled. "Poor girl came in at a bad time."
