"I took some aspirin, so they're leaving me alone for a while." Pilar answered. "Still have the stuffed-up nose."

"At least you're glad that this is just the regular type of flu. Not the spanish flu or something." Miles chuckled.
Bishop went over to the farm's phone. There was no cell phone reception out there, so landlines were the bloodlines of the telecommunications. He rang up a number, then shortly after hung up and rang again. This went on four times before he had settled down.
"It's Randall"
"Come on, don't bring her up, I need to talk to you."
"Wes came to me, told me about an alert going on."
"He's not from here. He kept some friends from his home state."
"The county's urban legends perhaps? He relaying it to others and that?"
"You've been trying ever since you left. I haven't heard anything yet."
"Look, you can come here."
"Come on, you think that - "
"Yes."
"Her."
"Now look, I can help you, but -"
"Just do it soon."
"Goodbye."
Bishop hung up, a bit distraught.

"Yes, be grateful for small mercies and all that." Pilar laughed. "Some things just kill you dead and some things just make you wish you were dead. Hard to tell what is worse."
Aislin moved about her assigned tasks, going easily through the chores that followed the recapture of Jack. She observed the Angus herd for a moment, watching the calves frolic about their mothers. She never tired of watching the babies grow, no matter which species they were.

Bishop made his way to Aislin. "So, any thoughts about quitting?" He asked, though his tone indicated that he doubted that from her. But his mind was in turmoil, doubting something big and was conflicted about something large.
"I'll go for 'wish you were dead'." Jonathan said "Though that's more for the comfort of others, I think it would just outright kill me never-the-less."

"No," Aislin shook her head. "I've had no problems with the work." She'd definitely gotten a bit dirtier as the day went on, but she was not at all perturbed with this. But she sensed something brooding inside Bishop; her inner-sense detected it as a writhing mass of conflicts and doubts revolving like a vortex around a mass of Very Bad Stuff. Carefully, she maintained a sanguine expression and attitude, heeding her user-mentor's warnings about getting too wrapped up in another's emotional state. Nevertheless, it was her calling to deal with this and find out what was going on.
"So how's it going with the bug hunt?" Pilar asked. "I saw the presser, Helen seemed to handle it quite well for someone who hates dealing with all that."

"Your workday is over." Bishop said. "If you don't have anything, I can give you your today's pay in advance for you to buy dinner and a wash." He had enough of runaways that had arrived with just their spare tire, so he was no stranger to that.
"I had my blood drawn some time ago, still waiting on results." Miles said. "Everyone's working overtime to get the samples done with."

"Thank you, sir." Aislin nodded.
"The better to get on top of it, I know." Pilar replied. "I hope they do, it was kind of a downer for Dorothy's first day on the job."

"Here." Bishop said as handing the pay over. "The rules of paying in advance is that you get paid for the work you've done, not what you're about to do." He said. "It's more than enough for a dinner, and Fred most likely told you about our own free wash here."
"Poor girl." Miles said. "I had also been looking forward to it. Remember how jittery Christine had been?" He chuckled.

Aislin accepted the pay packet. "He did, sir, and thank you again." Her thoughts went to the cafe she'd seen on the way in.
"Well, this'll spare her for another day or two, 'til they're sure of everyone." Pilar sighed. She was working away on the sampler while she crooked the phone's receiver between her cheek and her shoulder. She was also watching the TV news channel. "Oh, did you hear about Amara yet? Word's that her ex-husband is going off to the HV. I guess things were getting a little too difficult for him here."

"I'll see you tomorrow then." Bishop said and headed towards his house. Fred was still outside, using the waning light to get now calmed down Jack to his pasture.
"This is a case for the courts." Miles said. "He has rights to see his kids during the holidays at least. Is there a precedent of this sort of thing? I know he has always wanted to see his own kids."

Aislin stretched and yawned. After a wash, and a visit to the cafe, she'd have an early night.
"They've spent holidays with him." Pilar answered. "But they might not want to cross another world in between for that."

"But do they have the rights?" Miles asked. "It's precarious when it comes to children, and the gateway hasn't been open for long enough to set some definite rules other than background checks."

"I think Elena was discussing that with somebody the other day." Pilar answered. "The worlds will have to work out something a little more comprehensive as traffic goes up."

"Still, poor Amara, going through something like this." Miles said. "I know she would rather forget about him completely, but that's not an option when she didn't get his visitation rights taken away from him."

"Courts can be funny." Pilar sighed. "Of course I'm hearing much of this from Tyrell, who's so thankful that he's gay and will never have to worry about thorny family issues - apart from his latest boyfriend troubles."
