The heavy cruiser glanced towards them dismissively, but apparently decided that snubbing them would draw more unwelcome attention than giving an answer. "MV Carl Dietrich here. We are engaged in a salvage operation at the edge of the dropoff. We have all permissions and permits in order. Is there anything else you would like to know?"

"No, that's all," replied Freda, "Thank you. I apologize for bothering you and will keep out of your way. Nightshade out."
Freda signed off and glanced at those surrounding her and aboard her.
"Well?" asked Delfina.
"How about we move off somewhere more unintrusive and we'll discuss this," suggested Freda as she raised her anchor and her propellors began spinning, moving away from the dive site.
Delfina mumbled something under her breath and flicked her wrist in the direction of the dive site before turning toward the bow.

"Real chilly dude, isn't he?" Randy mused, daring a glance back. "Carl" stared back at them with the heavy-lidded glare of a bull defending its pasture.

"Yes, but let's regroup and think this over," said Delfina.
Freda ignored the glare and pushed on through the water toward their little cove, not stopping until she was anchored right now in the middle again. Delfina picked up the artifact again and looked at it for a moment.
"You know, I've been looking all over the sea bottom myself, but I haven't found any other "coin" that looked like this one," she said, "Maybe it was a lucky find... Or is it something more? What do you guys think?"

"This is just a wild-*ss guess," Manuel spoke up. He had been (wisely) keeping out of the conversation, being outnumbered by females here, one of whom was huge indeed. "But you think that medallion or whatever has something to do with what they're looking for?"

"Probably," said Delfina.
"Carl Dietrich said that they were doing salvage work," said Freda, "but I'm wondering for what. I've been through that area many times and I have never once heard of a sinking occurring there."
Delfina thought for a moment, "How about something falling from the sky and crashing into the sea and sinking?"
"Well, there was one story I heard from an old fishing trawler," said Freda, "about something like a fireball falling out of the sky one night and plunging into the sea near to where he was. It happened about 60 years ago, I think. I don't know much more than that and I thought it was just a legend."

"Fishing trawler, eh?" Manuel hmm'd. "Just what do they fish here, beside the shellfish?"
"I think I saw some little scuttlers around. Are those what they fish here?" "Scuttlers" were Dawn's term for trilobite-like creatures that the humans had discovered in the cove. Trilobites had been long extinct in the human world.

(((((OOC: I do believe that the Carsverse oceans have fish as small as these: www.aboututila.com/Photos/AdamLaverty/Fish-Silversides.JPG)))))"Silversides mostly," said Freda, "but it's just to keep the populations down. Nobody wants the oceans to be overrun by these little fish. They would be another shipping hazard to oceangoers."

"They're also made into fertilizer and used as flavoring." Randy pointed out. "Some boats like the taste of it in their fuel blends."
"If they're actually grunions, humans can eat them too." Dawn grinned keenly. "They come in and lay their eggs in the sand at night during the spawning season, and people can just scoop'em right up. I could go for some of that." She looked to Freda. "Probably have the same issues with them as the passenger pigeons in the midwest. Tess was telling me that when she was touring the racing venues with the drill team, they would see huge flocks of birds almost blacking out the sun, just like they described in the nineteenth century of our own world. If they came too close to the raceway, the aircraft working there would have to get out of their way or land."

"I can definitely understand why," Freda said with a bob of her bows.

"It was just kinda freaky to the humans, though, because nobody was really prepared for the experience of seeing an animal that's been extinct in our own world since the early 20th century." Dawn shivered a little. "The drill team people said it was almost eerie, though the locals thought nothing of it."
"Are we far enough now?" Randy asked.

"I guess that's one other difference between your world and ours," said Freda. She paused for a moment, "Yeah, we're in our little cove again. We won't be bothered here and beside, that Carl[/u] is too big to squeeze through the entrance like I can."

"Let's hope he doesn't have friends on the land." Manuel cast a wary glance about the small escarpment where most of the human party was encamped. "I'm gonna talk to Arnold about security arrangements. I think Randy's right. Something about that big dude just gave me the willies."

"I can set up some wards just in case," said Delfina, "Plus, I've also put our dive site marker under an invisibility spell so those other divers from that ship won't find it. Only we'll know where it is."

"That'd make me feel better." Randy nodded. The runabout was no coward, but no fool either.
"High tide tonight ." Dawn remarked. "If there's gonna be a grunion run, that would be the time. But it only happens after dark."
