"You're welcome," nodded Ebony as she shifted into gear, "Well, I'll be going now. It's close to lunchtime anyway."
*****
"Meredith doesn't like to talk much about her father, so I just leave it at that," said Shale, "I let Luke deal with it instead."
*****
Delfina, Freda, and Nerisa tried to look at it, but considering the latter two's size, that wasn't very easy.
"Does it have anything written on it?" asked Delfina.

"It's been on so long it's practically grown in." Randy noted. "We'd have to cut it off."
"There might have been something on the underside." Erika shrugged. "But it's like Randy says."
Robin and Jordan decided to leave it at that as they heard Bree waking up again. Greg motioned to them. "She'll be awake for a little while before I give her the next dose."
"Have a good day." Rodriguez saw Ebony out through the lobby.

"Cut it off?" asked Delfina, "Aren't there any other options?"
*****
Shale nodded, "Alright."

Ebony headed out of the station for the second time that day and headed toward the diner for lunch.

"Grease it up and get some underneath and see if it'll slide off." Ensign Jastrow suggested.
Greg went back to attend to Bree. "Your brother and sister are here."
"Robin? Jordan?" she called out weakly.
"We're here, Sis." Robin came up "And we're staying. We'll be right here."
"Just hang in there." Jordan kept up a brave front. "You licked it before, you'll beat its a** again." He turned to Shale for a moment. "Thanks for being with her."
Wild Bill and Fillmore were hanging out at the diner when they saw Ebony came in, and waved to her.

"Where can we get grease?" asked Delfina.
*****
"No problem," nodded Shale, "I wouldn't want to be anywhere else right now anyway."
*****
Ebony smiled back as she pulled into a stall. Her bandaged wounds still felt irritating to her.

"Just a sec, might have some 10-W-40 on me somewhere." Randy's aerials probed his own compartments. He came up with a can with a precision spray head. "See if you can work this underneath."
"That sounds like the kind of guy Bree would choose." Jordan smiled. "She never settled for any junk."
After speaking a bit with Robin, Bree accepted another dose and went back to sleep.
"Hey, Ebony." Fillmore called out, looking a little concerned. "What happened to you?"

Delfina took the 10-W-40 and sprayed some on Erika's aerial, then tried to wiggle it off without causing any damage.
*****
"Eyes meet eyes," replied Shale with a smile and gave a friendly shrug, "Maybe we both knew that we would be destined for each other when we first met."
*****
"I got attacked at the Palace Caverns by this crazy forklift," replied Ebony, "He had some blades on him."

"Whoah, that's bad." Fillmore shook his front and tsk'd. "Is that the same guy who jumped off the cliff and was killed?"
"Very bad, that was." Bill nodded. "It's been the talk of the town this morning. But enough of the bad stuff." He opened a compartment door and brought something out, wrapped in a blanket. He pulled back the blanket with his teeth, revealing the small bust, carved out of aromatic rosewood, of a human female with long hair, a likeness that would be familiar to Ebony. "What d'ya think?"
"It's coming." Randy nodded.
Erika winced a little and gritted her teeth as the band was worked off her aerial.
"And Bree always had pretty ones." Robin laughed. "like copper, or autumn leaves. That's the first thing people notice."

"Yeah," nodded Ebony, "Same one."
She turned as Bill unveiled the human bust to her. "Oh, wow... That's amazing." The Viper studied it for a moment, trying to identify the face, "Looks familiar..."
*****
Delfina worked it off as carefully as she could until, finally, she had it in her hand. "It's off," she said as she held it close to her face to study it.
*****
"I always thought her eyes were the prettiest feature," said Shale, "I can see all that personality and spunk in them."

"I had that hunk of rosewood for years now, but never knew quite what to do with it." Bill explained. "Until I saw a few humans for real."
Erika sighed with relief as the band came off. She had lived so long with it constricting her that she had ceased to notice it until now.
Inside the band, close to one of its rims, there was an inscription: 1st place, 2006 Bimini junior offshore race, turbine division.
"She needed all she could get." Jordan exhaled deeply. "It isn't easy to grow up as a freemartin, with the other kids calling you "bulldyke" or worse things."

"So, which of the humans did you do?" asked Ebony, "The face is sorta familiar but I can't think of the name yet."
*****
Delfina looked at the inscription and read it aloud, "1st place, 2006 Bimini junior offshore race, turbine division." She looked up at Erika, "You raced?"
*****
"She won't have to worry about that when I'm around," said Shale.

"I remember doing it, but I was still a kid at the time." Erika answered. "Maybe I was eleven or twelve when I ran it, I'm not sure."
"I was thinkin' a lot of Delfina, but I hadn't really seen her since that night, so I couldn't really fix the features for sure." Bill answered. "It was tetchy enough gettin' the anatomy right."
"And the Coast Guard colors make people think twice before giving her any lip now." Greg interjected slyly.

"Wouldn't they keep records of the winners for each year?" asked Delfina.
"Yes, they would," said Freda, who knew just a little bit about the sport, "The same way I keep records of my voyages."
"Then how about we look into it?" asked Delfina.
*****
"I think the features look fine," said Ebony, "and you know what? I have a sketchbook full of old drawings of human faces and poses too. The anatomy was a bit tricky for me too, but I got the hang of it with practice."
*****
"And that's another point for her," said Shale with a nod.

"We could do that." Jastrow nodded.
"Then we can track your family down." Randy said to Erika.
Bill pricked his sideviews. "I'd really like to see that."
"Wait till Mom and Papa get here." Jordan rolled his eyes. "Mom will tell you every cute and embarrassing thing from her childhood."

"Even something like that is a piece of the puzzle," said Delfina, "I'm sure we can figure this out."
*****
"I have it with me," said Ebony, pulling out an old sketchbook, "You can take a look at it if you want."
*****
"Oh boy," replied Shale.
