"We have the photographic record, and that's still being compared." Rodriquez answered. "How are those wounds now? Healing OK?"
Greg came out and introduced himself to the other LeVasseur sibs, who probably did not remember if they had seen him before. Robin looked over to Shale and whispered. "Quite the gatekeeper, isn't he?"
"A PI? Cool." Randy watched as Shale came out to greet the arriving family members.

"They're fine," replied Ebony, "Irritating, but fine. They're healing alright, I guess."

"I think he cares a lot about Bree from what I've heard," said Shale, "Sort of like a father figure."
*****
"He's pretty good at his job," said Delfina, "A natural-born detective from what I've observed."

Jordan and Robin showed little surprise at this. "Helos go into the Coast Guard academy at fourteen, because they want as many serviceable years out of one as they can get." Robin explained. "She was very bright, but it definitely got lonely there and I'm not surprised that she would connect with somebody who understood what they were dealing with."
"Papa was never too wild about her going in the first place." Jordan frowned. "He thinks that kind of service just uses up helos, breaks them down and spits them out. Of course, he had a bad experience in the French military before he got out, so he's always gonna look at it with jaded eyes."
"All that itching is the sign that they're healing." Rodgriguez answered. "So that's good." She continued to wait while Ebony studied the video feed.
"Looks like he mighta been a cop at one time." Randy was smart enough to know the signs as he watched Shale move about outside.

"Hope he doesn't see my job the same way," said Shale.
*****
Ebony fell quiet again and looked at the video feed. "You know what would help me? If I could just get a whiff of his scent. That's how people like me are able to identify somebody accurately."
*****
"He was," said Delfina, "In Nitropolis."

Rodriguez called someone on the intercom, and a few minutes later, an officer appeared with a few personal effects in evidence bags. "These were all found on him, and would have his scent."
"He's kind of eccentric anyway." Robin shrugged. "Even we find it hard to predict how he'll react, and we're his own kids."
"I've heard of the place." Randy nodded. "There's a big lake nearby. Got friends who trailer in and work there for the summer season. I've had the chance, but I don't like being hemmed in."

Ebony took one item in her antenna and sniffed it. Her reaction was to wrinkle her front in disgust. "Ugh, that smells like rotting seaweed. It's the same scent I picked up from the library and at the Palace Caverns. The dead guy is the same one."
*****
"Oh, so should I be worried since I'm engaged to his daughter?" asked Shale.
*****
"Ebony says it's like New York City, only smaller," said Delfina.
(((((OOC: In the Moonlight Shadow RP at WC, I've been writing that Nitropolis is near Shasta Lake, which is a real lake with a dam.)))))

"Brett had a bit of a time with him," Robin warned. "He had this idea that a Blackhawk who was going to be on overseas duty half the time wouldn't be good enough for one of HIS daughters. We just let him know that whether he liked it or not, that was the way it was going to be. He came to terms with it eventually."
"All right, then." Rodriguez nodded as the bags were resealed and taken back to the evidence room. "There were two others in before you, and though they hadn't seen so much of this individual as you did, they also confirmed that it was the forklift they saw at the library."
Randy shrugged, perhaps he didn't care for large cities either. "Sounds interesting, I guess, but I was born and bred in salt water. I'd be climbing the banks in a lake."

"Hopefully, that will be the same for me," said Shale.
*****
"Oh, who were they?" asked Ebony.
*****
"I guess you only live in a place where you feel comfortable, huh?" asked Delfina.

"If Papa respects anything, it's someone as stubborn as he is." Jordan smiled. "I think he married Mom because she's got the gumption to say "Hell, no!" to him at times."
"The librarian and a young man who had also been at the library." Rodriguez answered. "Though I can't give out names."
"The Great Lakes aren't so bad." Erika shrugged. "I had been there way back in childhood. I travelled up the coast and down the seaway with my family."

"That makes me feel better," said Shale. He was glad that his folks liked Bree without complaint, especially his mother, who adored her.
*****
Ebony already knew Doris, but the other youth she had no idea who it was. "Well, at least I'm glad to know I'm not the only one."
*****
"That must've been fun," said Delfina.

"So how's everything with you - besides this, of course?" Robin asked. "Haven't seen you in a bit."
"It's definitely shook up the town a little." Rodriguez acknowledged. "Little tourist place like this isn't used to the nasty stuff."
"Funny thing is, I can remember my sister, and our mother and father, but it's kind of like a haze." Erika said wistfully. "When I was a slave, they did all kinds of things to my head, and a lot of my memories were affected as well."
Stokes and Jastrow were visibly appalled as they listened to this.

"Well, I've been helping Luke solve a couple of exciting cases and playing uncle to his little girl," said Shale, "Cute kid. Very energetic. Perhaps too energetic. She seems to give her parents a scare when she does something wild."
*****
"It'll settle down again soon, I hope," said Ebony.
*****
Freda and Nerisa were listening intently, keeping their disgust at such knowledge to themselves.
"How much affected?" asked Freda.

"Haven't seen them in a while either." Robin tried to think of when she'd seen the couple last.
"Yeah. Anything that unsettles people is not too good for a place like this." Rodgriguez concurred. "Well, I think that's all we need for now."
Erika took a deep breath. "When I try to remember, say, the name of my sister, it seems like it's hidden in a cloud. The rest of it is much the same - fuzzy, like a washed-out painting."
Randy had an expression that was both sad and angry, certainly wondering what else had been done to Erika's mind during her captivity.

"Well, Meredith and Luke tend to keep to themselves," said Shales, "And Meredith still seems to be nervous that her father is still alive but in jail."
*****
"Already?" asked Ebony, "Are you sure there isn't anything else I could do?"
******
"Well," said Delfina, "Isn't there anything you were able to keep with you, like a picture or a trinket that was given to you by a member of your family?"

"We'll call if we have any other questions," Rodriguez said, "But in the meantime, the investigation is going forward, even if not much of it is really visible outside at this time. For the assistance you've given so far, you have our thanks."
"I've heard some stories." Robin shuddered. Jordan knew less, but perceived that the picture being painted was not a happy one.
"All I've got is this." Erica raised one of her aerials, shorter than Randy's, which usually lay flush against her gunwhales when not needed. There was a silver band around it, tarnished from years of exposure. "I think it was a prize or something from way back."
