SUMMARY: Ebony has just given birth and has to learn to accept the responsibility that fate has been given to her. Caring for twin boys, whom she's beginning to think of as her precious treasures, despite who their father is. She would go to any length to protect and care for them.

It had only been a few days since she had given birth to the twins, whom she named Kestrel and Falcon. Just how many days she wasn't sure and had no way to keep track of how much time had gone by. She had slept for much of that time, slowly regaining her strength, though she would occasionally be woken up by the hunger cries of her children.
There was barely anything in the abandoned cabin and what she did have had been buried in the cave-in. Ebony was starving herself and felt bad that she didn't have anything for the twins. She saw no way out of this situation.
If I don't find something to eat... for myself or the babies... the Viper thought wearily, All three of us... will starve to death... very soon...
She glanced down at the small infants who were suckling underneath her right front tire, trying to get whatever nourishment that they could from her already emaciated body. They could only get a few drops before pulling away and looking inquiringly up at her, giving a few “I'm-still-hungry” chirps.
“I-I'm sorry...” she said, her voice weak, “I-I don't have any more for you guys...”
As they were only a few days old, the twins did not understand a word their mother had said to them. They only chirped in response and pawed at her fender. Ebony only sighed deeply and closed her eyes, letting a few tears fall down her sides. She shivered under the blanket she had draped over herself and the babies, with the cold air seeping through the cracks of the old log cabin.
Not enough warmth... she thought as she heard her teeth chattering as it synchronized with her shivering and labored breathing. She let out a slow, shuddering breath as sleep and darkness overtook her.

A creaking sound woke her from a dreamless sleep. Ebony opened her eyes with a gasp and lifted her front, sniffing the cold, winter air. She didn't dare go outside, as she knew that it had been snowing non-stop and she didn't want to get stuck in a snowdrift or an avalanche.
Suddenly, there was a sharp crack loud enough to wake the dead. Her emerald green eyes traveled upward and quickly pinpointed the problem. One of the ceiling beams were rotten and was on the verge of breaking to pieces any minute.
However, what unnerved her was that it was positioned right above where she and the twins were resting. When it suddenly broke, her first instinct was to fling herself over her babies to protect them from falling debris. She was hit on the roof by the rotten support beam and knocked unconscious. The twins chirped repeatedly underneath their mother's unmoving body.

She woke up sometime later to the sound of these chirps. There was pain in her body, but at that moment, she didn't care how much she was injured by the collapse of the cabin. What mattered to her right now was if her babies were protected and unhurt.
The Viper gritted her teeth as she slowly lifted herself up to check on the twins. Fortunately, they were small enough to fit under her chassis and weren't hurt. They were huddled together.
Ebony was relieved and sank back down on her injured frame, mindful of the babies underneath her. Snowflakes alighted upon her dented hood and roof, which hurt so badly at the moment that she was crying.
T-they're safe... she thought weakly, t-they're not hurt...
But the collapsed cabin meant that now he had no shelter from the elements. She was still weak from childbirth, which was only a few days ago.
She pulled the now-tattered blanket out from under the debris and wrapped it around the twins, then placed them on her hood as she limped slowly out into the falling snow. The chill air made her shiver uncontrollably as she worked her way to a gravel road, in which she gratefully used to drive away from the place where she nearly died, along with her babies.

A red 1989 Honda Civic was wandering about the desert with a metal detector. The beeps were soft and intermittent, but his goal was simple. He wanted to find gold that he knew and believed that was buried in the desert.
Then a piece of bright blue fabric caught his attention and he went over to investigate. But before he could get within ten feet of the blue object, he was confronted by an angry, snarling Dodge Viper.
“Stay away from them!”
The Civic back away slowly, not wanting to anger the nearly rabid Viper. He quickly turned tail and sped off in the opposite direction far away from her, never knowing what her obsession was with that blue blanket.
Ebony snorted and turned back to that very blanket, nosing the bundles wrapped within. She was rewarded with a couple of happy chirps.
“Coast is clear, guys,” she called softly, “and it's time to eat.”
She smiled as the twins tumbled out of the folds of the blanket and scampered toward her to suckle. Ebony had managed to find enough fuel to consume and be able to produce enough nourishment for Kestrel and Falcon to grow and get stronger.
Ebony settled carefully onto her frame, mindful of the twins suckling underneath her front tires, letting them get as much as they wanted to satisfy their hunger. She had gotten used to the idea that the twins' needs came before her own and she often nearly starve herself in the process to provide everything for them.
But she knew that she needed to move on because someone now knew where she had hidden her babies. She was still afraid of the car who was still after her and didn't want him to find out that she given birth.
She sighed and shifted gingerly as Kestrel and Falcon were still suckling. Right now, she needed the patience to wait until the twins chirped at her, telling her that they were full.
Ebony couldn't help but think about the twins' heritage. They had been born with features from a Dodge Viper and a Toyota Supra, with a little bit of Mitsubishi Eclipse as well.
They are not only mine, the Viper thought, they are Tony's as well. If he finds out about them, he'll take them away from me, but I highly doubt he'll be a good father to them. He'll only hurt them. I can't let that happen.
It was a big responsibility for a young, teenage Viper girl, but Ebony believed that she had no other choice but to care for and protect the twins from danger. She was taken in by their innocent, light-hazel eyes with specks of green in them. Their tiny size spoke of their vulnerability that Ebony felt that she could never ever leave them to an unknown fate on their own.
I have to accept what fate hands to me, she thought, closing her eyes for a moment, These children are my responsibility. I have to be as good a mother as I can to them. I cannot abandon them. Ever.
She was alerted by soft chirping and noticed the twins crawling out from under her chassis, looking tired and licking their lips. They had had their fill and wanted to nap now.
“Time to go, my precious little treasures,” Ebony spoke softly as she bundled the twins back up in their blanket and easing the double bundle up on her hood. She made sure that they were safe and comfortable before she once again shifted into gear and drove off into the desert. The sun was slowly starting to set, bringing on the night.
She looked down at the bundle on her hood. Don't worry, little ones. I will always be here to protect and care for you. I will never leave either of you on your own.
That was the promise that Ebony had made and one that she intended to keep for as long as she was alive.
The End
