6. Breakaway
DISCLAIMER: Cars and everything related to it belong to Disney Pixar. Ebony and Ricardo Sanchez belong to me. From the 100 List. The song “Break Away” belongs to Kelly Clarkson. No copyright infringement intended. This is just for entertainment purposes only.
NOTE: It took me some time to figure out how to express this theme and I finally decided upon a songfic, which is a fanfic written around the theme of a particular song for those of you who don't know.
SUMMARY: At age 13, Ebony longs for a much better life than the one that she already has, which is not a good one at the moment. A visit to the school councilor helps her figure out her future goals.

The yells of children filled the courtyard along with the sounds of punches and screams of pain and fear from one young Dodge Viper who was in the center of the group. She was getting beaten up again and the teachers weren't doing anything to stop it.
Like they'd care about one lone foster child that has never known friendship. Ebony only went to this place of torture called school because her foster father, Ricardo Sanchez, made her go. He wanted her to have an 'education'. But if this is what it takes to get it, then it's not worth it in her opinion.
She managed to pull away from those other kids who were pulling at her mirrors and her antenna and rushed off to a safer corner of the courtyard, collapsing and crying from the harassment. The poor Viper girl stayed there for awhile until a teacher came looking for her and took her back into the school when recess was over.
When school was finally over, Ebony zipped out of there as fast as she could back to the apartment she shared with Rico, a nickname that she has given Ricardo, and rushing into her room. She dropped the roofbag on the floor and collapsed on her sleeping pad, exhaustion evident in her young features.
Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I'd just stare out my window
Dreaming of what could be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray (I would pray)
A knock on her door alerted her and she wearily lifted her front to look at it. Ebony guessed that it was Ricardo coming to check up on her. He must've seen the bruises and the split lip when she had come in earlier that afternoon.
“Ebs?” called the familiar voice of her foster father, “Are you alright in there?”
“I'm fine, Rico,” answered Ebony, wiping away a tear, “Just tired and I have homework to do right now. So can we please talk later?”
But Ricardo wasn't having none of it and came in. Ebony straightened herself out on her pad. “Ebs, I saw what happened to you when you came home. The other kids beat on you again, didn't they?” asked the Dodge Stealth.
Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed I could break away
Ebony bit her lip, uncertain. She nodded slowly. “Uh huh... they ganged up on me... I couldn't fight back...”
“Didn't you tell the teachers?” Ricardo asked, carefully checking the bruises and split lip and determined what he needed to do to fix those.
“No, why would they care...?” Ebony answered sadly, “They'll just say I started it... and I didn't! Everyone hates me!”
Ricardo sighed and settled down close to the Viper. “Ebs, why do you listen to such nonsense? That's not true at all. They just don't give themselves a chance to get to know you better and see who you really are on the inside.”
“No,” Ebony shook her front, then turned her gaze to the window, “You wouldn't understand anyway.”
Ricardo blinked for a moment, then sighed then got back up to his tires. He could see that Ebony didn't want to talk now, so he decided not to push her any further than she was comfortable with. He drove to the door and let himself out. She needs some time to herself, he thought as he drove back down to the shop.
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
After the door shut, Ebony got up off of her pad and rolled quietly over to the window to look down on the street below. It was quite abandoned by evening and there was nobody except for the homeless tuners and drug dealers that lived there.
I wish I could have a life where nobody will beat on me and give me a hard time, she thought. It started to rain. Ebony sighed and went back to doing her homework, but then she started to daydream.
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
She saw herself as an adventurer and a novelist. Her books have become bestsellers in the market and has thrown her into celebrity status. Everywhere she went, cars would want her to sign copies of her book that they owned for them. Her books were about the adventures that she had and the people that she had met. She had had good experiences and bad experiences, but she had managed to write about every single one.
Her name was flashed across millions of television screens which helped to sell millions of copies of her books, thus becoming a household name. Ebony Sanchez.
It was then that she snapped out of her daydream and looked out the window, seeing it dark outside already. How long had she been looking at her own unpainted walls? She looked at her clock that was sitting on her nightstand. 11:30pm at night.
Wow, it's late, she thought as she put her books away, I should already be asleep already.
Ebony burrowed under her nightcovers and turned out the light, making it dark inside her small room. It took awhile, but she finally fell asleep with thoughts of her future in her dreams.
Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away (I will)
And breakaway
The next morning, Ebony went to see went to see the school guidance councilor and took the test that he gave to her. She took her time answering each question honestly and when she finally handed it back, she waited as the councilor checked her answers over, determining her skills.
She learned that she would be very happy in a career that utilized her level-headedness, and allowed her to work mainly on her own. She needed a career that would allow her to stimulate her senses and her mind, without having to be involved with lots of people.
Then the councilor listed a few choice careers that would be perfect for her. She found that she liked Novelist, Graphic Designer, and Artist from the list. The Viper accepted the results of her career test from the councilor and went back to her classes in a much lighter mood than the one that she was in before.
Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging around revolving doors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway
What she had learned about herself was quite a shocking experience for the young Viper girl. It was true that she liked working and being alone. She wanted to avoid attention at all costs. She did tend to keep to herself, and not interact much with the people around her. She only enjoyed spending time with a few a close friends. She'd listen to others, but didn't like sharing much about herself. She was very quiet and private.
She was also very practical, and only act after thinking things through. She didn't like being forced to answer quickly. She had to evaluate the situation completely and could only make decisions based on what she could verify with her senses.
She did, however, like to be involved deeply in one or two special projects, but liked to be behind the scenes. She was very logical and fair. She felt that she should be honest with others at all costs.
She trusted what was certain and only like new ideas if they can be practically applied to the situation. She valued what was real and used her common sense. She liked to utilize the skills that she had instead of learning new ones and she was very specific and detailed when writing or talking to others. She was also fortunate that she could follow directions well. She wanted decisions to be made as she didn't like things to be left in limbo and liked to know what she might be getting into before she decided to commit to something. She tended to focus on the here and now. She enjoyed completing projects. She liked setting goals and working towards them.
I'll spread my wings
And I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Ebony came in through the front door of the apartment and went upramp to look for Ricardo to tell him the good news. “Hey, Rico,” she called, “I'm home from school and I have something really important to tell you.”
The Stealth came out of their apartment with a look of curiosity on his front. “What is it, Ebs?”
“I got some great news,” Ebony said quickly, “I went and talked to the school councilor today and he gave me this test to take to help me with my career goals. I have the results right here.”
The Viper took a folder out of her roofbag and handed it to Ricardo. For once, she felt very happy, despite the abuse that she had to go through again with the other kids. Ricardo scanned the pages for a few minutes then a smile lit up on his front.
“Ebs, that's great,” he said, “I knew you could do it.”
“Thanks, Rico,” smiled Ebony, taking back the folder.
“I'll tell you what,” he said, “I'm done with work for the day as far as I'm concerned and we'll go out to dinner. Which restaurant do you want to go to? It's your choice.”
Ebony rose a bit on her tires, acting very happy. “I'd like to go to Diana and Sonny's! They have the best-tasting fuel ever!”
“Alright then,” nodded Ricardo, “Go put your books away and get washed up.”
“Sure, Rico,” Ebony answered, then drove off to her room to drop off her roofbag and use the washroom. She'd do her homework later when she got back.
The young Viper then joined the Stealth and they both left the apartment to go Diana and Sonny's Diner for dinner.
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway, breakaway, breakaway
