Like the kind you read in Music mags....
In the view of Kori Turbowitz
I had the opportunity to park and interview the latest rock and roll sensation to emerge from Carburetor County, the extremely popular Delinquent Road Hazards. They are just back from a massive tour of the States and are getting ready to head to Asia in support of their multi-platinum selling self-titled album. Boost (lead vocals and guitar), Wingo (lead guitar), Drewster (bass), Snot Rod (drums), and DJ (turntables and keyboards) first gained fame for their cameo appearances in a movie based on the rise of Piston Cup racer Lightning McQueen.
Kori Turbowitz: Hi, fellas. Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule.
Boost: Sure thing, Kori.
DJ: Thanks for having us.
KT: Tell me how you met.
B: Wingo, DJ and I met at a party.
Wingo: Me and DJ grew up together.
B: Yeah. Anyway, we were at this party…
W: It was a rockin’ party with hot babes…
DJ: Shaddup, yo…yeah I was spinnin’ discs when Boost came up and asked me if I’d like to work on a project with him. He was trying to get a band together.
KT: And you agreed?
DJ: Yeah. It sounded like fun.
B: Then Wingo is showin’ off to some babes, with his guitar, and I’m like ‘I want that guy in my band too’.
W: Cuz I’m hot, yo…
DJ: Shaddup, homie. (laughter)
B: So we start jammin’ together. DJ had to do the bass and drums, cause we didn’t have anyone to play those.
KT: Is that how Snot Rod got involved? How did you meet him?
DJ: We was drivin’…
W: We like to do that, real fast…
DJ: Shaddup. We like to cruise and pick on other cars.
B: It’s fun to see their faces when we weave around them. (laughs)
DJ: But sometimes we want the road to ourselves, ya know.
W: So we is tryin’ to figure out how to clear the road, yo, and there’s this muscle car guy who pulls up to Boost, and he’s like ‘Yo, you guys wanna hog the road?’ and Boost is like….
B: He says he can clear the road with his sneezin’…so we try ‘em out.
KT: And like that, he’s in?
DJ: Well, pretty much, yeah. But then he finds out we have a band started, and he’s like ‘I play drums’.
B: Plus, I find out he’s my half-brother. So we let him join.
KT: Haha. A lot of folks were wondering why a muscle car joined a bunch of tuners. Drewster, you weren’t part of the original group. How did you get involved?
Drewster: Long story. But I was driving from LA and ended up in Radiator Springs and started dating Snot Rod. I found out they had a band going and they found out I play bass…
DJ: I was doin’ the bass lines at that point.
B: Our previous bass player quit…
W: He sucked, yo!
DJ: Shaddup, Wingnut. I couldn’t concentrate on my turntable skills as much.
D: I tried out and they liked my playing.
KT: What is it like being the distaff member of the group?
D: It’s great. These guys are like brothers to me and Snotty’s my boyfriend. And they respect me too.
B: Yeah, she’s one of us.
W: We is not chavvy, yo.
KT: Wingo, your womanizing is notorious.
W: Boost is worse…
DJ: Yeah, he da ladies’ man. (laughter)
KT: Lightning McQueen was a member at one time, wasn’t he? What happened?
D: He still sits in occasionally.
B: His racing career came first. But he did record some stuff with us. He’s a great guitarist.
KT: I’m sure most don’t know that about him…
Snot Rod: He’s a really nice guy too.
DJ: He really helped us out after Boost’s accident.
KT: Accident? What happened?
B: I’d rather not talk about it.
D: We got stuck in Radiator Springs and he found us a place to stay and stuff.
W: We still there.
DJ: Our recording studio is there.
KT: Well between McQueen’s racing headquarters and your studio, Radiator Springs is a busy place now. How is fame treating you?
B: It’s been great so far.
W: Lotsa hot babes…
DJ: Shaddup, yo. Yeah the gang has gotten bigger.
KT: Gang?
B: Yeah. The Delinquent Road Hazards is more than just the five of us.
D: I guess you could call it our fan club.
SR: But we hang with all our members.
DJ: And we get into mischief. (winks…laughter)
KT: It looks like old ways die hard. Have you started work on your next album?
B: We’re always writing.
DJ: Drewster comes up with these incredible bass lines and we build the songs off those.
D: DJ has great ideas too. He does his writing on the keyboard. He’s classically trained, ya know.
KT: Really, DJ?
DJ: I graduated from the East Coast Music Conservatory. With honors.
KT: I wouldn’t have guessed.
B: Yeah, a class valedictorian in a street gang! (laughter)
SR: We all have college degrees.
W: But we is rebels, yo.
KT: Interesting. May I ask what you majored in?
B: Business.
W: Art, yo.
SR: Computer Science.
D: Radiology Tech.
KT: Wow. That’s incredible!
DJ: Yeah, huh? Some peeps think we’re uneducated. (laughter)
KT: Well I think you are all very charming. Thank you for the interview, and good luck on the Asian leg of your tour.
DRH: Thanks, Kori.
