50. Breaking the Rules
DISCLAIMER: Cars and everything related to it belongs to Disney Pixar. Ebony, Maven, and Krill belong to me. Phoenix, Chase, and Sheila belong to Insane Pirate Dragon. No copyright infringement intended. This is just for fun.
NOTE: This is from the 100 List. I've decided to express this particular theme as a fanfiction.
SUMMARY: The kids want to do something fun, but they have to break one of the most important rules to be able to do so, which leads to something bad happening to them and they learn a very important lesson.

“Mom?” a young girl's voice broke into her fever dreams.
Ebony groaned and slowly opened her eyes to find her two children and her nephew standing in front of her looking quite guilty, as if they had done something wrong. The Viper straightened herself out so that she could get a better look at the trio.
Maven, Krill, and Chase all looked scuffed up, as if they had fallen into something dirty. Two pairs of hazel eyes and one pair of pale blue ones were glued to their hoods.
“Go on, you guys,” Phoenix urged the children, “Tell her what you just told me. She needs to know.
“Know what...?” Ebony asked groggily, looking at them, “What did you guys do...?”
“Well...” Krill said uncertainly, “You know those rules that you told us that we shouldn't break?”
“Yeah...” Ebony nodded slowly, not wanting to get dizzy, “What about them...?”
“Um... we broke one of them...” Krill said guiltily.
“Can you tell me what happened...?” asked the Viper.
Both Krill and Chase looked at Maven, as she was better and explaining than they were. She took a deep breath, “Well... it began like any other normal morning... and we were planning on what we wanted to do today...”
Two hours earlier
“C'mon, Chase,” Krill said to his younger cousin, “What's it gonna hurt to just take a look, huh?”
The 11-year-old Viper/Trans Am mix hesitated, looking over to where his parents, Phoenix and Boost, were at, then turned back to his 16-year-old cousin. “I dunno... Mom would be able to track me easily with her magic.”
“Well, not if I set up a block to prevent her from doing so,” smirked Maven.
Chase slowly nodded, knowing that his mother couldn't pick up on his magical signature if it was blocked by another user. He looked toward Maven, who he knew was a much more experienced user than he was at the moment.
“Can you do that?” Chase asked Maven.
Maven nodded, “Yeah.”
“Alright, I'll go,” said Chase, “as long as it'll get me away from Sheila.”
Twenty-five minutes later
“Are you sure that it's safe?” Chase asked as he peered into the darkness of the abandoned mine that the trio had come to, “The sign says 'Danger! Keep Out!'”
“Oh, pfft, we won't be in any danger if we watch ourselves,” Krill rolled his eyes and set out into the mine, “C'mon guys...”
Reluctantly, Chase followed along with Maven, who shrugged at him when he looked at her, as they worked their way into the mine. Already the Vipes Am was starting to have a bad feeling about this latest little adventure of theirs.
As the trio made their way into the mine, they encountered broken rails that led deeper inside. The walls were braced by old, wooden pillars, which had rotted in some places and looked to be ready to collapse from the slightest wrong movement from any trespassers.
When the trio passed by one of these pillars, Krill unknowingly tapped the rotten part before he moved on with his sister and cousin as they traveled further down into the darkness. It was then that a rumbling sound was heard, which started the three kids.
“What was that?” asked Chase.
“It's a cave-in!” Krill shouted, “Let's get out of here!”
“Right behind you, Bro!” Maven quickly shifted into gear to follow her brother out of the mine.
But before either kid could drive back to the entrance, the ceiling gave and let loose rocks and soil in front of the trio. Maven had to throw up a shield over Krill and Chase to protect them from falling debris that rained down on them.
After waiting for a few minutes, the trio looked about through Maven's transparent shield at the debris that was now strewn all about the ground now. Maven raised her shield to a position above them.
“We're trapped,” Krill said at last, breaking the silence, “We'll never get out!”
“We won't?” asked a scared Vipes Am.
“Krill, stop scaring him,” Maven admonished her twin brother, “We'll find a way out. I'm sure of it.”
The green Viper sighed and used one of the big nearby rocks to lift himself up to sniff at the debris blocking their way out like a nervous dog, “How do we get through all this?”
“What do we do, Mave?” asked Chase, turning to his older cousin.
Maven was trying to concentrate on keeping the shield up and studying the blocked passageway. She was becoming strained by the amount of magic power that she was putting out, but otherwise was trying to keep her courage up for Chase.
“Well,” the violet Viper said at last through the strain, “Perhaps I could use a combination of lightning and fire spells to break through the barrier.”
“Do you think that'll work?” Chase asked Maven.
“I don't know, but it's the only way other than digging that would give us a way out,” Maven replied, “That would reveal my signature to Aunt Nix, though, but that doesn't matter at the moment. Krill, Chase. Get behind me. Now.”
Both boys complied and got behind the violet Viper, watching as she blasted away at the rocks to make a passageway that they could use to escape. She was also holding up the shield to protect herself, Krill, and Chase from flying debris. Finally, after ten minutes of continuous pounding, a tunnel was created for escape.
“Let's get out of here! Now!” Krill shouted, helping his exhausted sister out through the passageway.
Finally, the trio were back outside, just as the rest of the mine collapsed upon itself. Maven, Krill, and Chase were covered with dust, but were otherwise unhurt. They marveled at how they had managed to evade certain doom with their lives.
“C-can we go back home now?” asked Chase, “I think I've had enough exploring for one morning.”
“Me too,” Maven concurred, getting up on her tires, “And I think we need to tell someone what had happened here as well.”
The boys nodded silently and followed Maven back to town, where they ran into Phoenix. She had sensed the sudden outflow of energy and was going to investigate. The kids told her what had just happened to them at the abandoned mine. The Trans Am did not scold them, but had decided to take them to see Ebony, who had been down with a fever for the past few days.
Present time
“...and that's what happened, Mom...” Maven's voice wavered as she finished her story, her eyes still downcast.
Ebony was silent for a moment, shifting her frame into a more comfortable position on her sleeping pad. She was becoming tired again, but had forced herself to stay awake long enough to listen to her daughter's story.
She wasn't going to get angry at the children, although she didn't like that they had broken one of her most important rules that she had set up for them to follow. She had made that one for a one particular reason.
“Guys, you remember why I made up that rule, right...?” she asked in a fever-weakened voice.
“To protect us so that we can be safe?” Chase offered helpfully. He had been silent the whole time and was nestled close to his mother.
Ebony nodded slowly, “That's right... Now I want you three to listen and obey the rules next time, alright...?”
“Yes, Mom,” said the twins.
“We will, Aunt Ebs,” nodded Chase.
“Good...” Ebony gave a weak smile, “Thank you, kids... That makes me feel better...”
“We're sorry,” Krill said apologetically.
“At least you guys aren't hurt,” said Phoenix, “but just remember what she said about obeying the rules. C'mon guys. Let her rest now. We'll go to the living room for awhile.”
The three kids nodded and followed the Trams Am out of Ebony's room so that the Viper could have some peace and quiet to recover. It started to rain at that moment, so it was a good thing that the kids thought quickly and found a way out of their predicament. But they knew how important rules were now. It was for their own safety.
