Part 1
The morning sun shone through the windows, falling upon the slick, polished, modified hood of a familiar black Dodge Viper. Ebony squeezed her eyes shut to ward off the light in hopes of getting more sleep, but groaned when she failed that attempt.
And I used to like waking up early, she thought as she stood up slowly and stretched the stiffness out of her suspension, The years go by so fast that I already find myself a grandmother.
It's not like she didn't enjoy being a grandmother. She loved her grandchildren dearly and always made time to dote on them whenever her daughter and son-in-law brought them over for a visit.
Feels just like yesterday that Maven and Krill were only tiny babies placed in front of my after they were born, the old Viper thought as the memory came forth unbidden.
She remembered when they were born, although it had been rough on her. But when it was over, she was a proud, young mother of twins, a girl and a boy whom she had given the names Maven and Krill, respectively.
Now the twins were all grown up and had lives over their own. Maven was a World History teacher at the local high school now. Ebony had watched her grow up from childhood to her teenage years and then finally to adulthood where Maven had a family of her own.
Ebony recalled meeting the boy that Maven had brought home one afternoon and announced that she was dating him. The boy, a light green Pontiac/Toyota cross, turned out to be the son of Anastasia Carson and Edward Kuramoto. At first, Ebony was a little uneasy that her daughter was dating the son of a demon, who was the very same demon who had caused her mental anguish in the past, but she had gradually grown used to him being around her daughter.
It must have been because she had made amends with Annie years ago and had accepted Edward Kuramoto II, or EJ as Maven called him, into her life and soon her son-in-law when he and Maven got married after they graduated from college. He was a good husband, in her estimation, and to her surprise and delight, he also turned out to be a good father to his children.
Ebony remembered the first time that Maven had come to her with the news that she was in term. The younger Viper was a little afraid of the prospect of carrying a baby, judging from the experience Ebony herself had, but was relieved when her mother offered her some very helpful advice and stayed with her daughter throughout the whole term, even to the time when Maven had gone into labor one evening.
After a hard labor, Maven gave birth to a son, whom she named Justin. He was a combination of both his father and mother, or to be more precise, a Toyota/Pontiac/Dodge mix. So was Hazel, the second child born a few years later. Ebony loved both her grandchildren and thought that Maven was a great mother, like herself.
Krill, on the other tire, had grown up and taking up stunting, which was dangerous work and required excellent driving and maneuverability skills. He had a few girlfriends on the side, but was never serious at dating. Ebony worried constantly about her son's well-being as he would occasionally get hurt. Her sister-in-law, Phoenix, who was married to her brother, Boost, and who was a former stunter herself, assured her that the danger came with the job description and that Krill had accepted it. Ebony reluctantly took the Trans Am's word for it.
Ebony sighed, bringing her thoughts back to the present time and rolled slowly out of the bedroom that she shared with Slaytor, a 1965 throwback Ford Mustang GT350 SR, her husband of 30 years. He had been with her for all this time and supported her through so much that she couldn't think of a single reason that she could possibly live without him.
Driving down the hallway which led to the living room, Ebony passed by framed and unframed pictures hanging on both sides of the walls. These depicted her and her growing family as well as memories from the past that she treasured and kept close to her. She smiled at those.
She paused to quietly peek into her son's room to see the green, tuned Viper still asleep. He had recently been injured at his job and was now convalescing at home. It was a good thing that he was receiving worker's compensation from his accident.
Ebony decided to let her son sleep and quietly shut the door, continuing the rest of the way to the living room where the family computer sat on a desk on the corner. She booted it up and got on the Internet to check her email.
There was an email from Maven with a big file attachment. Ebony had only chatted with her daughter yesterday about what had been happening during her family vacation and had promised to take pictures of their adventures at Virginia Beach, Virginia.
She opened the email and read what Maven had wrote to her:
Dear Mom,
I told you when we chatted a few days ago that I would send you photos of the kids and us enjoying our vacation. Don't worry. I've kept my promise because EJ kept reminding me. Attached are batch of photos which you can view at your leisure. I've sent a similar email to Annie.
Anyway, I hope you're okay without me around. I also hope that Krill is doing alright since you told me about his accident on the set in the last email. I worry about him since he's my twin brother, but EJ assured me that he'll be fine and that he was too tough to let a little injury bother him. I love my husband because he's so caring and understanding. I bet he gets it from Annie.
I miss you and love you. Hope to be back as soon as our vacation's over.
Your loving daughter,
Maven.
P.S. - Oh, Justin and Hazel say hi and that they love you too. They just woke up and were wondering what I was doing on the computer so early. We'll see you soon. Bye for now.
Ebony smiled and clicked the attachment file, downloading the photos onto her computer to look at. Several were of the whole family together on the beach and other points of interest in Virginia Beach. Others of just the children splashing in the water with their father and having fun. There was one of Hazel building a sandcastle and Justin knocking it over, causing his sister to cry and Maven coming over to comfort the little girl. Maven turning the camera on herself and waving at it. There was the kids writing 'Hi Grandma' in the wet sand and then having the waves wash the writing away soon afterward. Ebony enjoyed each and every one of the photos, sometimes laughing at some of them because they were so funny. They reminded her of her own vacation that she had had with Slaytor and the twins years ago down in Palm Beach, Florida and knew that Maven had said that she wanted a vacation just like that sometime when she was older and had a family of her own.
“Enjoy your vacation, Mave,” she said quietly to herself, “Looking forward to seeing you, EJ, and the kids soon.”
I wonder if Annie has seen the photos yet, she thought as she filed away the photos in a special folder to view later with Slaytor and Krill, I bet that she would enjoy them too.
“Mom...?”
Ebony turned about at the sound of a familiar voice. She saw Krill standing there between the hallway and the living room and found herself marveling at how far he had gotten, despite his injuries.
“Krill, what are you doing up?” she asked gently, “You're supposed to be resting and recuperating right now.”
“Your laughing woke me up...” replied Krill as he limped slowly up to where Ebony was by the computer, “What were looking at on there anyway...?”
“Sorry about that,” Ebony smiled sheepishly. She turned back to the computer, “I was looking at the latest photos from Mave's vacation.”
“Oh, did she have any interesting ones...?” asked Krill as he watched Ebony open the folder with the photos, then he cringed a little bit at some sudden pain, “Owww...”
Ebony turned to her son, “You'd better go lay down, Krill. I'll go fix you up a nice, hot mocha latte infusion in the kitchen, alright?”
“Alright, Mom...” Krill turned and slowly limped back to his room, “But I still want to see the photos... and I hope Mave is having a good time at Virginia Beach...”
“That's what she said in the email,” Ebony answered from the kitchen, “and I'll transfer the photos to the laptop for you.”
Krill sighed with relief as he settled back down on his sleeping pad. That short drive had hurt and his axle felt sore. Now he knew how Aunt Nix felt when she had broke hers. But his thoughts were on his twin sister at the moment. He did hope that she, EJ, and the kids were alright and, indeed having a good time. The bond between twins were strong and one would instinctively know what's happening or might happen to the other, even if both were far apart from each other at the moment.
I hope that you're alright, Sis, Krill thought, Chrysler forbid something bad happens to make you reveal your magic.
