“And that's how I outsmarted Grayston twice,” the black, tuned Dodge Viper finished her story to an audience of three attentive young boys.
The three boys were silent for a few seconds until the youngest, a black, retro-modern Ford Mustang, spoke up, “Wow, you're brave, Aunt Ebs. Mom said that everyone was afraid to go up against him.”
“Your mom's right,” nodded Ebony, “Even the FBI was afraid to deal with him. A bunch of cowards as I think of them, only wanting to cover their own bumpers.”
“Why do you think that?” asked Gryffin.
“They wanted to turn your mom over to Grayston so they wouldn't have to catch his wrath,” Ebony answered bitterly.
“But they didn't,” Kestrel pointed out, “because you wouldn't allow that to happen. You told us that before, Mom.”
“I know. I did,” agreed Ebony, nodding to her 9-year-old son, then turned back to her 8-year-old nephew, “I did it because I wanted to help your mom out. If I didn't take that risk to face Grayston, you wouldn't have been born and I wouldn't be telling you this.”
Gryffin was silent for awhile, his pale blue eyes studying the Viper whom he called his aunt. She and his mom were bond-sisters, even though not related, but they treated each other as such anyway. It was like a sort of mutual trust that they had in each other.
Suddenly, Kestrel yawned. Ebony saw this and chuckled, “I guess all that storytelling has made you guys sleepy.”
“But I'm not sleepy, Mom,” Falcon protested, but he contradicted himself by following his twin brother's example by yawning too.
“You were saying?” smirked Ebony, as she knelt to nuzzle her two sons affectionately, “Now come. Off to bed now. Both of you.”
“Aw, Mom,” protested the twins, but did as they were told and let their mother take them to their rooms.
After a few minutes, Ebony returned to the living room. She was just about to take Gryffin back to his parents' penthouse suite when she heard a knock on her door.
“Who is it?” she called out politely.
A black nose poked through the doorway. “It's just me, Ebs,” came the familiar voice of Phoenix Grayston-Sanchez, “May I talk to you for a few minutes?”
Ebony nodded, “Sure, Nix. Come on in.”
The Pontiac Trans Am pulled all the way into Ebony's suite. Gryffin came over to her and accepted a nuzzle from his mother.
“I just put the twins to bed,” said Ebony, “What do you want to talk to me about?”
Phoenix got right to the point, “I'll be quick, then. I'm going to be at a business meeting all day tomorrow. Rico's already left to see to his mod shop in Cortez and--”
Ebony was already guessing what Phoenix wanted to ask her. “And you want me to watch Gryff for you, right?”
“Good guess, Ebs,” Phoenix smiled, then nodded, “Yeah, I do. So could you please?”
“Sure,” replied Ebony, “I be glad to watch him for you. I don't mind at all.”
“Thanks, Ebs,” nodded Phoenix, as she nudged Gryffin out of the Viper's room and toward her own, “Well, I'll let you get some sleep now since it's late. Goodnight.”
Ebony had rolled up to the door to watch Phoenix and Gryffin depart. She nodded goodnight to them, then gently shut the door and rolled over to her sleeping pad and lay down underneath the thick nightcover and then fell asleep.

The next day, Ebony had the twins and Gryffin down in the hotel lobby. All three boys were quite bouncy, but Ebony was sure she could handle the triple balls of energy. She had promised Phoenix that she'd keep everything under control.
But these things never stayed as the Viper hoped it would. Kestrel, Falcon, and Gryffin were chasing each other around the lobby and other guests when their momentum knocked over a vase full of chrysanthemums and orchids from its pedestal. Flowers, water, soil, and broken porcelain lay everywhere.
Ebony pulled up to where the three boys stood with guilty looks on their fronts.
“Guys, what have I told you about racing in the lobby?” she asked sternly.
“To not to,” said Kestrel.
“And?” prompted Ebony, looking at the boys.
“Because it's rude to the guests,” added Falcon.
“And?”
“Because Mom doesn't want any accidents happening while she's busy,” Gryffin put in, hoping that would help.
Ebony nodded appreciatively, “Right.”
“Do we have to clean it up?” Falcon asked his mother.
“Yes, but the janitor's taking care of that right now,” replied the Viper as she saw a powder blue Toyota Prius came over with some cleaning equipment.
“What are we gonna do now?” asked Gryffin.
Ebony thought for a moment. Then she had an idea. “Let's go to the park.”
* * * * *
The trip to the park was something that Ebony thought would calm these three energetic boys down. She had bought some snacks at the local grocery for a picnic and had spread the quilted blanket on the grass and lay down on it to watch the boys tussle with each other.
However, she had dozed off at one point and had forgotten she had the boys with her. Or at least they were with her for a little while.
When she woke up, she didn't see Kestrel, Falcon, or Gryffin anywhere in the park, although she looked around for them. Ebony began to go into a panic when she couldn't find the boys.
Chrysler, the Viper thought as she frantically looked around, Nix is not gonna like this. I promised her that I would keep on eye on them. But I had to fall asleep and they disappear on me. I have to find them before they get into trouble... Or worse... Get hurt or lost... Or both...
With those thoughts in her mind, the Viper quickly gathered up the blanket, sticking it in her trunk area, and took off in search of the three missing boys.

Meanwhile, the three boys had wandered far out of Ebony's sight, heading toward a small pond that was part of the park. Falcon picked up a small stone and turned to Kestrel and Gryffin.
“Hey, wanna see me skip this stone?” the little Viper boy asked, a grin on his front.
“Can you do that here?” asked Gryffin, looking around, “Won't we get in trouble?”
“This is a family park,” said Falcon, “You can do whatever you want here. There's no law saying you can't skip stones. So what do ya say, Gryff?”
“Okay...” the little Mustang boy nodded reluctantly.
Both Kestrel and Gryffin watched as Falcon skip stones upon the water. It seemed to be a harmless activity, but the Viper boy had to turn it into a game.
The game didn't get a chance to get too serious because that is when Ebony comes upon them. All three boys could tell that she looked very frantic and her facial expression was etched with terrible worry.
“Chrysler! There you are!” she exclaimed breathlessly as she came up to them, “You guys had me worried! Why did you wander off like that?”
“We're sorry,” Kestrel apologized, looking quite guilty of what he, Falcon, and Gryffin had done, “We didn't mean to make you worry, Mom.”
“Don't do it again, okay?” Ebony replied as she was calming down, “It's a good thing that neither of you boys were hurt, though.”
“Are you angry with us, Aunt Ebs?” Gryffin asked, looking up at the Viper with his pale blue eyes.
Ebony looked down at the little Mustang and smiled at him. She gave him a roof noogie.
“Of course not, Gryff,” she replied, “I could never get mad with you. And neither would your mother, though I'd suggest that you tell her what had happened today so she wouldn't have to worry either.”
“Okay,” nodded Gryffin, seeing that Ebony wanted him to do the right thing.
“Mom?” Kestrel piped up, touching Ebony's fender to get her attention, “You don't look so good. Are you sick again?”
Ebony had to admit that she was feeling a little bit warm under the hood, but she had pegged it to the worrying that she had been doing recently. But when Kestrel had asked her if she was getting sick, she thought of the triggers that would bring her down to that level.
“Well, then,” she said in response, “Maybe it's best to go back to the hotel so I could get some rest.”
“What about us?” asked Falcon, “What can we do in the meantime?”
“I have the latest new video games that I'm beta-testing,” suggested Ebony as she turned back toward the Firebird hotel, “You guys can try them out if you want.”
“Cool,” cheered the twins and Gryffin, who all fell in behind the adult Viper back to the hotel where the rest of the day was spent playing video games in Ebony's suite while she was napping.
* * * * *
Later, that night there came a light knock on the door. A black Trans Am pulled in. She saw the boys in the living room playing video games, then headed to the bedroom where Ebony was resting.
“Hey, Ebs,” she said softly as she slipped inside, “How did things go while I was in that meeting?”
“Just fine, although I had a bit of a panic attack when they wandered away from me,” replied Ebony as she sat up on her mat.
“They didn't hurt themselves, did they?” asked Phoenix with concern as she looked back at the boys.
“Naw, I got to them just in time before anything serious could happen,” said the Viper, “Although, I think that triggered my hyperpyrexia... I'm not feeling so well right now...”
Phoenix nodded with approval, “I'm glad you didn't let them get hurt, Ebs.” Then she frowned when she heard Ebony say that she wasn't feeling well. “Just get some rest now, okay?” she said, touching the Viper's fender lightly, “I'll keep and eye on the boys for you this time.”
“Alright...” Ebony yawned, not wanting to argue with the Trans Am, “Thanks, Nix.”
When the Viper drifted off to sleep, Phoenix pulled the nightcover overtop her bond-sister and then left the room to go see what the boys were doing. She'd keep her promise to Ebony just like the Viper had kept her promise to her that day.
