The work crew put the last stays together and stepped back to review their handiwork. There was now a goat-proof fence around the pond.
Lazaro pulled up the black box - it was heavy - and tucked it under his arm. He sprinted out towards one of the lines, but another one came down from the sky, from the Chinook that been flying around. There were a couple of loops on the end. "The black box and you too." was the message he got over his headset. Holding on tight, he put a foot in the lower loop and took the other in his free hand. Slowly, the Chinook winched him up and lifted him out until he was even with the precipice. The helo shifted until Lazaro was over safe, solid ground, and not a moment too soon, for the gorge below was going through another shift, with the dirt flowing like liquid.
The Chinook set down about three hundred yards away. He appeared a little nervous, for the fog bank was advancing again. Reading his intent, Lazaro brought the black box over and handed it to a military forklift waiting inside. "We'll see you at the trailhead!" the helo called out before lifting off.
Lazaro then went to see Ronald and check on Aron, Julian and the others who had been down with him. "Everyone OK?"
"We're about to get out of here." Ronald radioed Delfina. "We'll get back to the base camp and stay there until tomorrow. Everyone's too done in to move much further."

Ebony came over to inspect the fence herself and felt satisfied that it would prevent her children from getting to near. There was a brief spark at the tip of her antenna, but she did not notice it at the moment.
~~~~~
"Okay," Delfina answered as she stretched her wings to make sure that she was capable of the flight back.
<<< OK, I think it's time for a new thread after this >>>
Tess raised her eyebrow a bit as she saw Ebony's antenna-tip spark. What was that?
Ronald sent the rest of the team off into the pass as the fog rolled back in, but waited until he saw that Delfina was ready to go.
