"I could've gone with him and I could've at least provided him with support, but he wouldn't let me leave," said Ebony, "How useful is that? Sometimes I think my empathy is a curse."

"But when you found out, it was already too late. When he left it was already out of your threads. Its not your fault like you think it is," Phoenix said. "And if you think your empathy is a curse, then I am the one as they say, 'is royally screwed'. You at least can't read minds."

"But I can feel others' emotions or their pain or both," replied Ebony, slumping on her tires, looking worn out, "And it affects my body in negative ways. I'm drained after that and there's really not that much I can do."

"You just need to learn how to focus it and use it," Phoenix said. "If it wasn't for the blocks I have up around my mind, I would be suffering from constant headaches from everyone's thoughts."

"I don't know how to do that," said Ebony, "I just thought that these empathic episodes were just a phase that I'm going though. Look, it's not that I don't like magic, it's because I never had any interest in it in the first place so I never bothered to find out much about empathy."

"I understand," Phoenix said. "You didn't grow up around magic like I did. But besides that. You and me, we aren't that different if you think about it."

"And how are we not much different from each other? Please tell me," said Ebony.

"We were both raised without our parents; you dumped on the streets, me dumped with my grandfather." Phoenix said. "Society factored in how we were raised. And before we came here, no one really cared what happened to us. But you at least had someone who cared about your welfare. You at least had Ricardo there for you."

"He was the one who gave me these mods... except for the side spikes..." said Ebony, " and he showed me how to survive on the streets, using my own wits and intelligence to get me out of tough situations."

"And it payed off for you. All I got ever got from my grandfather were these beauties." She gestered to her lightning scars that marked her sides. "And they don't stand for anything."

"They stand for how cruel your grandfather is, I got them too," replied Ebony, "but as for my spikes, they can hurt as well as protect. And they are very sharp." She gestures with a tire to the walls where there are now a lot of scrape marks made by her spikes. "But they aren't mods like the others that I have. It's more like I was... born with them already a part of my body."

"They almost seem keen to your emotions," Phoenix said. "You get upset or angry they spring out to respond to that. Kind of like what I did with the lightning in the hallway the other night."

Ebony paused for a minute. Her spikes had withdrawn when she had calmed down enough as she was no longer in a high-intensity emotional state.
"Almost like my spikes and your powers are mood-sensative," she mused, "They respond to our emotions."

Phoenix nodded. "See, despite us coming two different worlds. We really aren't that mush different. Well, except you have your two boys."

Ebony's thoughts went to her kids, who were currently being looked after by Ricardo. "Like the humans, I really feel the need to protect my babies from harm. I am definately no coward and that Aron is too closed-minded to understand that."
