I'm curious for fanfiction purposes whether Sheriff's jurisdiction extends beyond the boundaries of Radiator Springs. He waits by the town's welcome sign, which I assume sits at its border, but has anyone seen any evidence that he might patrol the rural areas outside of the town itself?
In my previous fanfiction, some events take place in an unnamed area I referred to as simply "a rural, unincorporated area of Carburetor County" for lack of any canon name. Around here, most towns have their own police force, and the more rural areas around the town center are referred to as townships. A township may have its own police force or it may be patrolled by either the nearby town's police or by state troopers.

Good thought- after all, Caburetor County seems to be pretty empty.

Thanks, and good point. Does anyone know if there are any towns that exist in canon in the county besides RS? There are locations like Ornament Valley, Willys Butte and Tailfin Pass, but anything else?

In the old Cars RP archives there is a place in the desert called Three Towers, which I assume is a natural rock formation. I think Eva made that up. There are also some ravines that are near the Three Towers as well as a river.
I think there was also a nearby town that was named in the RP, but I forgot what it was called. I'll have to look that up in the RP archives.

A long time ago someone in the IMDB boards mentioned that when the map of Route 66 and the Interstate is shown in the "Our Town" scene, the number on the road near Radiator Springs, which I think was 42, indicates 42 miles to the nearest town. I don't know if that's within the county or not, but it gives something to think about.

Okay, found it. It's called Villa Francesca, according to part 26 of the old Cars RP and it has a mall. That could be as far as Sheriff could go.

Thank you both! Forty-two miles, that's far! It certainly must be a scarcely-populated area. Would I be permitted to mention Villa Francesca in my fanfic, and if so, should I credit the HH board and Eva?

Villa Francesca is larger than RS because it is closer to the Interstate and has its own exit. It can also be reached by back roads. It's large enough to have a mall, a radio station and a decent park. It also has the annual Cactus Blossom Festival every July.
