The StoryBackground ReadingWell, this is an interesting turn in events. Bertie Ahern is quite right in saying that Northern Ireland has to get away from this kind of violence. Meanwhile, at the talks themselves, the same old Catch 22 deadlock is going on: The DUP won't work with Sinn Fein until Sinn Fein support policing, and Sinn Fein refuse to support policing first, waiting on the DUP to go to government. We have some of the most predictable politics in the history of everything. It's so depressing. I wish both of these parties would wake up and smell the roses: that Northern Ireland is bigger than the two of them combined, and they are going to ruin it if they can't swallow their pride. Apologies for sounding so down, but my country's political situation depresses me. *Sigh*

That sucks, man. :/
I hear this often from my friends, one of whom is third-generation immigrant Irish and still has a lot of family over there. It's a really awful situation.

Wow, you really have it bad over there. My sympathies go out to you and your fellow countrymen.

Well, it's not as bad as in the 1970's, but it's still no fun. Thanks for your understanding.

You have my sympathies. Living in Maritime Canada (lots of Irish descendants here), I can't imagine life lived under those circumstances. I hope I never have to, but with the way the world is going, things can always change.

I hope it gets better soon... In times like these I don't think there's a country out there not on the edge. It's scary for everyone, because we as individulals feel like we can do nothing about it. Nobody likes that feeling of helplessness. I earnestly hope this gets better and a compromise is reached.
