"I'm not sure how really old it is," said Delfina, "but it looks pretty well perserved for just being covered with a layer of sand all that time."
"Maybe you'd better take it back to the laps for testing," suggested Freda, "Then we'll know how old it is."

"So how could they find that out?" Randy asked.

"The best way I know is carbon-dating as well as radiometric dating," said Freda, "The latter is usually more accurate than the former."

"We'd have to send it away." Dawn leaned back at last. "Then again, it could be something somebody just threw away or planted here for some reason."

"I don't know," sighed Delfina, then pointed at the images on the coin, "but if so, whoever it was had to be extremely artistic and imaginative to create images like that."

"And look how detailed they are." Manuel pointed out. "Only lasers or something like that could cut that fine."

"And it's real shiny with absolutely no rust on it," said Delfina as she turned the coin over in her hand, letting the morning sunlight reflect off of the surface, "Like a brand new penny. And it looks like it was made out of pure gold too."

"OK, so no one would just throw something like that away." Dawn compressed her mouth in thought. "We should take pictures of it, anyway." She turned to fetch the still digital camera.
"Wonder if there's any more like it?" Randy looked on speculatively.

Delfina held up the coin to be photographed.
"Well," she said, "I could go back down and check."
"Try doing a grid search," offered Freda, "It's more thorough."
"That would work," nodded Delfina.

"We could do that after lunch." Dawn put the camera away and went back looking for the cooler they'd brought aboard. She opened it up and brought out some bread, cheeses, fruit and cold sliced goose breast, that last kept from the last fall bird hunt.

"Yeah," nodded Delfina, putting the coin back in its protective wrappings and back into her pack for safe keeping. She was hungry as well and she was really taking a liking to the goose breast. It went good with the cheese.
She proceeded to make herself a sandwich, then took a piece of fruit.

While the humans lunched, Randy was entertaining himself - and Freda, he hoped - by tossing bits of crab meat to the jet-wolves, which darted and dove enthusiastically for the treats. That was about the only use he had for crustaceans.

Freda only smiled, but she was more interested in the artifact that the humans had found. She was fascinated with strange things.

Dude, the smalltrack kit, investigated the foodstuffs the humans were eating, but showed no further interest in it.
"Freda, have you found anything else here before?" Dawn asked.

"If you mean that artifact that Delfina found, no," answered Freda, "I've never seen anything like it before. Even I'm wondering where it came from."
