Really?! You'll have to tell me what you think. I'll probably end up buying the soundtrack. Loved the music in the movie.

I saw it! Here's my little review:
I just saw Surf's Up tonight. The movie released only 2 days ago, but I was surprised to find the theater largely empty.
The first time I saw a preview for the film-- despite my shock and cringing at the sight of witnessing a preview for yet ANOTHER penguin movie-- I couldn't help but really like the sound of it. The movie has received very positive critical response overall (74% on rottentomatoes.com), which is something that I wasn't expecting-- and was happy to see.
In spite of the overused anthropomorphic penguin thing, I loved it. I did feel as though the movie was a bit short (and as a result had to skimp on some of the character development), and the ending was somewhat anti-climactic, but the characters, story, interactions, and themes-- while nothing incredibly original (what is anymore?)-- were really fun and touching. It really reminded me quite a bit of Cars, which everyone knows is one of my favorite movies. Cody's character was great. Call me a sucker, but I can't get enough of that formula, and Surf's Up added enough original elements to keep things from feeling too rehashed. The documentary format, for example, added a nice element of originality to the film. I never saw Happy Feet (the concept and characters really didn't appeal to me, although I won't judge it yet), but one thing's for sure: these penguins are a lot cuter and more expressive than those in Happy Feet. The animation in this film is gorgeous, and the water effects are simply unbelievable if you know anything about how difficult it is to animate water.
Overall, Surf's Up was great fun and great eye candy. Not perfect (I had to cringe at few lame jokes), but still great. Try and look past the overused penguins and give it a chance. The birds really weren't tacked on-- they were the perfect animals for the subject. As much as copycatting annoys me, I tend to judge each movie more as an individual package based on its own merit and not on originality in comparison to other films, so I was able to look past it. I just wish for the sake of everyone else that this movie had come out either before the other penguin movies or a few years down the road.

I agree with porpoisemuffins, the penguins were a lot better looking in Surf's Up than they were in Happy Feet. The movie over all was lovely - and I also liked the fact that they could add a strong female character without having her fall head over heads in love with the main male character. They just had them become friends.
Chicken Joe was also really awesome. Made the film for me. And the hole "why don't you go over there are grab yourself a glass of SHUT UP" line was hilarious, too. And the baby penguin always letting himself drown.
I did notice, however, that the storyline was almost identical to Cars.
-Main character dreams of winning race, is pretty cocky about it. Doesn't have any friends where he's from - Main character moves to a new place and meets new friends. - Main character learns of "evil" competitor who will stop at nothing to win at surfing, including hurting other surfers - Main character meets female (though, admittedly, doesn't get together with said girl) - Main character meets old male character whom at first he argues with all the time - Main character bonds with older mentor and learns that he is in fact a legendary surfer - Main character gets old surfer to teach him all his tricks - Main character learns about friendship and letting go - Main character enters race and uses all the tricks mentor and previous surfing champ taught him - Main character loses competition to help save another surfer who is being bullied by the "villain" surfer - Old mentor and thought to have vanished surfer makes a re-appearance and everyone cheers - Main character learns that winning isn't everything

Yeah, some movie plot lines are ridiculously similar.

The actors broke precedent by recording their scenes side by side, adding an energetic improv vibe missing from most animated features. Surf's Up isn't the Big Kahuna, but it's far from a wipeout.
