Ebony blinked. "I'm afraid to admit it, but I somehow relate to what Thing went through. It's scary, but true."
She looked at Niles, "No, I don't think I've done anything wrong. All I thought of what Thing was doing was just downright murder and I just wanted to stop it. I never liked killing anybody, even if they were bullies."

Matt nodded. "That makes sense. It sounds like you had the right to do what you did. Although," he said, half-chuckling and half-serious, "Thing might not have seen it that way."

Ebony nodded and looked from BC, Niles, Matt, Lorena, and then her sister-in-law. "I guess that's why he's haunting me. But did he have to follow me all the way from Nitropolis? Shouldn't he have stayed in the place where he died?"
"It's a logical explanation," Lorena spoke up, "but sometimes spirits attach themselves to the living that they acquire the ability to travel distances. It's happened before."

"Hm", Matt nodded. "Makes sense."

"And I can sense at least two spirits who have done that," said Lorena.
Ebony blinked and sent out a mental message, 'Chase, how long have you been around after your death?' "So would it help if we went back to the source?" Ebony asked aloud, "Would that help put Thing at peace?"
"If he hasn't moved on, than it should be time to go and tell him it's time," said Lorena.

Buck did his daily routine: Get an STP, turn on TV, see if football was on ESPN. But this time he got quite the surprise... "Seven days..." "....AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!" He dashed outside, screaming. "GUYS! GUYS! I was watching TV and I..... It was.... THE RI-HING WAS OOON!!! I HATE THAT MOVIE!" Oh, come on. We all know there are no REAL haunted tapes... right?

-BC gave a nod.- Definitely so. He may have been a complete creep, but anybody deserves a peaceful afterlife, I believe... and from what I hear from some underdogs who knew him, he was a savior. -The big combine chuckled, and yawned again.-
-Niles was taking mental notes of all of this. He was a master memorizer. If asked to recall this entire conversation when they got to Nitropolis, if they were going, he could do it word for word, even mimic the combine's strange accent.-

"I'd like to set some things straight with him too," said Ebony, "I just want to tell him that I only did what I thought was right, but that I was young back then and didn't know him that well to make a better judgment."

-Niles looked to Ebony, and replied:- One trend you often see in these kinds of hauntings is they usually leave their subjects alone after their issue with them is settled. This Thing doesn't sound like too unreasonable of a guy.
-BC looked to Niles, licking a spot of dirt off the back of his header, then talking:- Thing wouldn't defend himself... that was something that was always mentioned in the legend. He'd seek revenge for anybody but himself. That leads me to believe that it won't be too difficult to get him to stop whatever he's doing.
-Niles nodded:- It's likely. It could be that Thing is doing this because you, Ebony, have stopped him from further ridding this world of bullies. By killing him, you took away his ability to rid of bullies. Perhaps he's angry because he can't defend cars anymore. Y'know what I'm saying?

"Yeah, but like I said, that's like murder to me and the law does state that murder gets you jail time if you commit it excessively," said Ebony, "and I do realize that there are a lot of bullies in the world, but killing them isn't going to solve anything. It just leads to more trouble."

-BC:- Well, the way that the law views combines is that... they think we're animals, no greater than lightning bugs. A combine can't be charged of crime because it's said that it'd be like suing your tractor. We're farm equipment, that's all they see... and because we live in hiding most of the time, officials don't know any better. Thing got away with those murders for that reason.
-Niles listened.- That's interesting, but you're right. I never really thought of it like that.

"Sounds like his genetics were in his favor because of his mother," said Ebony, "And he did help me out with Tony Blitz a little bit, keeping that no good car away from my home, so I guess I really shouldn't be blaming him because of what he was."

-BC gave a slight sigh.- Combines and cars don't usually get along that well, and when a combine tries to live with cars, bad things happen... even if they are half car. Thing was practically stuck between a rock and a hard place because he was unaccepted by most combines for bein' half car, and he was unaccepted by most cars for bein' half combine. It was like... the only way he could be on anybody's good side was to drastically defend the underdogs.
-Niles was silent, taking mental notes. He knew the big combine wasn't going to be able to come to Nitropolis, so he was trying to memorize everything he was saying.-

"I was young and naive back then and I didn't know any better," admitted Ebony, "I don't think I can undo what I did to him at that levee, but maybe I can somehow help him find his way back home."
Lorena nodded, "Yes, helping a spirit find his or her way out of limbo is certainly a good idea. He will be much happier that you did that. It'll help him to move on."

-BC nodded:- I ought to warn you, though... that's just how the story was told, and there were two versions of the story. The other version... well, Thing was evil. He killed people because he enjoyed it, and justified it by killing bullies because his sheer anger toward them was off the charts. In our culture... we always look to the light side of everything.
-Niles thought a moment.- Culture?
-BC looked to Niles:- Yeah. You don't know it, but my kind have a thriving society. We live in herds most of the time, and work the fields day in and day out. Combines are usually very optimistic, and positive. You don't hear about depression in combine society, it doesn't exist. Thing was extremely sadistic, and that got him expelled from our society.
