"Needs jam." Jonathan said. He was more of a waffle guy than pancakes. "Perhaps some good strawberry jam, or blueberries."
Gideon accepted his tube as well and headed down to the boats. He couldn't really stand being near the humans as they would play a much larger part of the day today. But the ships would play a bit less part, which made him more comfortable. He turned to the side, not to look like a creepy guy watching them sleep.

"Too late for strawberries and too early for blueberries, if they grow around here at all." Teru shrugged. "Guess we'll make do with syrup."
Zack woke first, muttering and shaking his aerials. His motions disturbed Cissy, who slowly opened her ice-blue eyes and looked around. The tug saw the helo sitting on the river bank and whuffled out his nose. "Mornin'."

"No syrup for me." Jonathan said as he frowned. He had been the butt of a joke where he got glue instead of syrup when he had been a kid. That had been the first and last time he had seen his grandparents from his mother's side.
"Good Morning." Gideon said to Cissy. He didn't want to tell her how brave she was. She had been getting that all the time last night. He just settled for a nice look. "You got some good friend." He said referring to Zack.

"Whatever." Teru sat down and waited for the first round of pancakes to be ready.
"He is." Cissy smiled, in a way that suggested that Zack might become more than 'just a friend' by and by. Zack just rubbed cheeks with her and smiled. "You're... Gideon, are you?" she asked. "Sorry I'm n-not so good at matching names with faces."

Jonathan picked up a glass of water, thankfully purified to avoid any contaminants. The first pancakes quickly were found on the dishes of others.
"You're better than some I know." Gideon smiled.

Elena handed Jonathan a plate with several pancakes. "Here you go."
Cissy responded with a close-lipped smile, still a little shy. "Th-thanks."
Zack was more forward. "So, how's the relic business these days? I do a bit of salvage work myself."

"Thanks." Jonathan said, happy about not getting the scraps.
"It has it's ups and downs." Gideon said. "You will most likely end up living with 10 bucks a week for food at points, struggle with the middle men ripping you off. But then you can get noticed and get all the good jobs right in front of the noses of the other teams."

"Pancakes is always good." Cyrus dug in enthusiastically. For all he knew, it could be his last meal.
Kelora, who was one of those weird helos who actually liked pancakes, accepted a couple of the leftover flapjacks once the humans received theirs. She then came down to the banks of the cove to see what was what with Gideon.
"A bit like that in salvage." Zack was answering. "It's either feast or famine, and you'd better have something stashed away for the lean times. But I get enough to make it pay."

"We got a contract with the government." Daryush said. "The first Oka ever born, and someone who's related to the great Verant line, though not to the Verant-Graystone one." He said. "It seems that powerful people don't want to see people like that living on the streets scavenging for food." He chuckled. "So we get the pretty contracts. We were for instance at Washington before all this happened."

"What kind of stuff are they still finding there?" Zack asked. "Must be pretty picked over by now."

"Not quite." Gideon said. "It still has some leftover radiation so the danger of dying outweights the spoils. But we got into the mother-load, the Library of Congress."

Zack whistled. "That must be something. What kind of stuff were you finding there besides lots of books and papers?"

Gideon shifted his gaze slightly. This brought up the memories about when he got relayed to what they had found there. Bodies, journals of people losing it slowly by radiation and starvation combined. "Some things less pleasant than others." He said, wanting to leave it at that.

"I get the picture." Zack also looked away slightly. In his humanside salvage work, he had dredged up many unpleasant things along with the worthwhile stuff. It was one of the costs of this business. He nuzzled Cissy as she shivered slightly; she had a vivid imagination and letting this conversation go to nasty places wouldn't do her any good. "So, what can you tell me about the rest of your team?"

"Well, have you heard of the Verant family?" Gideon asked. "We got an off-shot of those named Jonathan, and his little quirk is to fish out interesting things. And when those things become erotic toys, Cyrus likes to pick them up. He collects them for some reason. And then the one who has to convince people to hire oddballs like us is Rihanna. She's quite a trooper, good talker and can identify some of the stuff we find, no matter how worn."
