"I wouldn't doubt that," said Delfina.
*****
'From my daughter, no doubt," said Rebecca.
*****
"Good," nodded Arrow, "At least you now have two warships on your side."
*****
Since the cove seemed to be crowded with boats of all shapes and sizes now, Nerisa contented herself with remaining outside the entrance, pacing back and forth. She was wracking her brain to try to figure out how to catch Carl inside a fog bank, but was coming up with nothing so far.
*****
Ebony settled down on the grass and kept an eye on the boys, while Artemis snuggled against her fender.

Kendall lay on the other side of Ebony, also watching the boys, but noted that Bree was out, at the boundary of the park. "Bree's looking much better."
"Oh, that's a freaky mental image." Randy had never met an amphibian craft before.
"You'd be right." Dawn laughed. "Sorry for the trouble earlier, but that butthead just won't take a clue."
"Thank you, sir." Jastrow smiled. "Now all we need is a plan." He glanced to Nerisa outside the cove mouth. "I can see the wheels turning in her brain."

"Indeed," nodded Ebony, glancing over and waving to Bree with a smile.
*****
"We had amphibious craft back in our world," said Delfina, "Though they weren't alive like they are here."
*****
"Oh, the big, black-hulled ship that was talking to my husband?" asked Rebecca, "He did seem mean an insulting."
*****
Arrow knew Nerisa, having been in the same fleet with her. "She usually has pretty good, innovative, inventive ideas to help the fleet. I wouldn't doubt what she can come up with."

Bree took that as an OK to come closer, since she was intending to seek out a nice, shady area anyway. The heat rising off the tarmac was getting quite oppressive for one used to the bracing sea breezes. She expected to hear from Shale a bit later, as they had reckoned that a private talk between him and his mother might be in order to figure out what to do about Tanaree.
"We'll probably be seeing more of her in Colorado, now that they've tied the knot." Kendall said. "And she said that maybe in a year she'll go to reserve officer status and just enjoy being Mrs. Huntington for a while. She's already put quite a few years in."
"Gunny is a force to be reckoned with." Dagmar smiled ruefully. "Once a Marine, always a Marine, that's what they say."
"Just don't let him stick another needle in me." Malia grumped. "He made all the boats on staff get shots when they moved the team in."
"That's not the half of it." Dawn frowned. "Ask Erika over there how mean he is."
"I could see a promotion for her pretty soon." Jastrow couldn't see Nerisa remaining a lieutenant for too much longer.

"True. That's not a whole lot different from when you came out to live in Colorado after you met me," said Ebony, "And that's before we got married."
*****
"Wouldn't doubt that," said Delfina, "Sorta reminds me of General Patton. He was a tough human general who fought in World War II in my world."
*****
Freda nods as Rebecca turns to view Erika, "It's true, Mom. And he's intimidating too."
*****
"She deserves it," said Arrow, "I can give her my recommendations."

"Like General Reeves here?" Randy asked. "The Germans called him "General Nightmare."
"And probably worse things." Erika smiled.
Kendall kept an eye on the boys as he talked. "At the time, I never even saw it coming. Just... BANG."
"I'd say implanted pain-inducers are definitely that." Dawn scowled.
"She definitely has a recommendation from everyone here." Jastrow nodded.

"I guess there are similarities," said Delfina, "All we have left of our world are the books, films, and artwork we've managed to save right before the blow-up. They all serve as an archive of human history."
*****
The twins tended to sniff about in the grass, the same way they did when they stayed in the center court.
"Yeah, that was kinda unexpected," said Ebony.
*****
"The poor dear," said Rebecca sympathetically.
*****
"True," Arrow gave a nod of agreement.

Randy pricked his aerials. "I'd be interested in seeing some of that. Seriously."
"Like that." Kendall chuckled as a group of seagulls that the boys had been approaching suddenly took off in front of their faces in a flurry of wings.
"Recovery is gonna take a while for her." Dawn looked back towards the racer girls. "And from what I'm hearing, those two are related. That other one just happened to be in town for a race last Saturday and had to stay over after hitting a log and getting bruised."
"Uh... hi." Marty came up to Arrow and Jastrow.
"Hey, Marty." Jastrow greeted the mini-sub.

"There were some videos showing up until the moment of disaster on YouTube several years ago, I think," said Delfina, "Very grim and sad. I wouldn't recommend children watching it, though."
*****
Kestrel and Falcon jumped back as the seagulls flew up in front of them.
Ebony couldn't help but laugh, "Now that's gotta be camera-worthy."
*****
"It would be interesting to find out the truth of that," said Rebecca.
*****
Arrow dipped his front to Marty, "Hello."

"Maybe sometime when I can digest something like that." Randy nodded.
Kendall had brought out his own digital camera and had it at the ready. "Got that."
"Not to be prying, but I overheard something about DNA tests." Dawn nodded.
"It's an honor, sir, to be meetin' the father of a friend." Marty grinned. "Freda's the best."

"Let me know when you do," said Delfina.
*****
"Now, I think we're getting too many pictures of the boys," said Ebony.
*****
"Oh, I believe it's to prove that those two girls over there are related to each other," said Rebecca, indicating Erika and Dagmar.
*****
"She's my little girl," said Arrow with a bit of fatherly pride in his voice.

"All right." Randy nodded. "It's like... I'm not a kid anymore, and all this was like a cement wall in my face."
Erika came up to Randy and nudged him. "Dagmar wants to meet you."
"Hey, Arte." Kendall looked over to the little girl. "You want to do some pictures?"
"Yeah..." Dawn nodded. "Funny how monohulls and cats can turn up in the same family line."
"And we'd never let anyone hurt her." Marty vowed.

"I didn't mean it that way," said Delfina, "And it's not like we're keeping it under lock and key. It's just that we're rather wary to show it to anyone else, even if they ask politely and no matter what their age might be. We don't want to be exploited, you see. It's sort of a trust issue thing."
She turned as Erika and Dagmar came up.
*****
"No," Artemis shook her front.
*****
"Interesting concept," said Rebecca.
*****
"That's good to hear, son," said Arrow.

"Oh, that wasn't about the videos, sorry if I didn't put that across." Randy was slightly alarmed that he had led Delfina to make an assumption that he didn't intend. "It was about me. I've been doing more growing up in the last week than in the last five years. I don't blame you at all for not wanting to show it to any gawker that comes along."
"You OK, Randy?" Erika asked.
"Yeah." Randy nodded.
"You look tired." Erika was concerned.
"We could do this later..." Dagmar looked a little guilty.
"No... it's OK." Randy dredged up a smile. "I just had a lot to think about, that's all."
"Is there anything you'd like to do?" Kendall asked the little girl. "Maybe go down to the beach?"
"Must be like our own "cats"... the kind that sit in our laps and purr." Dawn said. "Some are born white, some black, some with stripes. All in the same litter."
"Yeah, Marty actually took Carl on, along with Randy and Delfina." Jastrow informed Arrow. "Living proof that size doesn't matter."

"I think we all just need to rest," said Delfina, "Everyone seems to be on edge right now."
*****
Artemis shook her head, "No."
*****
"I have not seen these cats," said Rebecca.
*****
"And that would excellent work in my book," said Arrow, "Your bravery is commendable."
