Oh sorry'. Phoenix said sheepishly. 'Hopefully it won't get too out of thread. I'd hate to break it up'.

Ebony sighed mentally and looked away, 'Let's just go back... This is a private matter between Strip and Amber... We shouldn't be watching anyway... it's not right...'

'Alright', Phoenix said with a nod as she shifted into gear.

Ebony led the way back to the tent, slipping inside and laying down on the rugs provided to them. She gave a soft sigh, just wanting to go to sleep.

Phoenix followed and pulled in and settled down not far from the Viper.

Ebony was preoccupied with wanting to be back home with her children as she was now starting to think that perhaps she had made a mistake in coming along on this hunt in the first place, as she didn't have that much zeal or interest in the activity as the others do.

Strip realized then that it would take more than himself to heal this rift, it would be a whole-family thing. He moved in a little closer to Amber. "All this time, we've also racked our heads to see what we could do about this, but we could never find the words. But I'm trying now."
"Yeah, I don't envy that situation one bit." Daniel sighed.

Amber was quiet for a moment. "Why not try to get to know me better?"
*****
Delfina grabbed Daniel's arm, "Let's go. I don't think we should interrupt a family moment of this nature."

"That's what I want to do." Strip affirmed. "The only way we can do that is with time. Well, time's what we have now."
Daniel was carried away by Delfina's arm-grab, and went along with nary a protest. Liska would have done the exact same thing, except sooner.

Amber just nodded silently, "Okay..."

Delfina led Daniel back to the human side of the camp.

Strip seemed to relax a bit. "I remember, a long time ago, when we went down to the pond near where I grew up, and you waded right in and tried to catch some minnows that were swimming there. Your mother almost died at the sight of you afterwards." he smiled at the memory.
Daniel yawned. "Sleep is looking good to me right now."

"I can barely remember that," said Amber.

"Then go to bed, Daniel," said Delfina, gently maneuvering him toward the tent, "We don't want you falling asleep during the hunt tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow." Daniel walked off to the men's section of the tent.
"It's one of the things I remembered the most, along with your fifth birthday when the clown didn't show up and Luke had to fill in. You thought he did a pretty good job." Luke had been one of Strip's pit crew.

People were already stirring before the first light, feeding, watering and saddling horses, loading up gear, mustering together in their assigned places before they were to move out to the trap site. The structure had to be up as soon as possible, to use the daylight to its fullest. Misty and the helos were already moving out to scout for groups of mule deer, the first species to be taken. The does would be starting to gather together again about this time of year, and the bucks would be heading into rut but not fully into it yet. They would have, for the most part, weaned off their spring fawns, though a few late ones were still following their mothers. The party would try to avoid trapping very young animals for fear of separating them from their dams. The procedure would be repeated, with certain variations and different site locations, for elk and antelope later.
Across a ridge, the arms of the trap were erected, leading into a circular catch pen, all screened off with khaki-colored canvas. From the pen there extended one squeeze chute, into which humans and 'taurcats would tag individual animals, inject them with vitamins and antibiotics, and send them into a trailer, with Elena or Julian waiting to send it as quickly as possible to the other side where the animals would be released into a large enclosure with as little direct handling as possible. There would be a crew waiting on the other side to verify the count of deer and assure their welfare. With the change of environment and diet and capture stress, some mortality was inevitable, though it was hoped to keep it to a very small percentage.
The cars in the party were mostly there to help the helos keep the movement pressure on the deer, and move the rear screen once the animals had entered the arms of the funnel trap.
