Janet saw the fighters move away. Although their presence was comforting, they wouldn't have been much help in her situation, and probably had more important duties to attend to. She continued trying to track the sub for as long as possible.
--------------------------------
Fletcher stopped following the trawlers...the water was starting to become shallow, and their confidence was giving him a bad feeling. In any case, there was no escaping the cove without passing dangerously close to him and Nerina.
"You are surrounded, outnumbered, and outgunned!" He called out. "Give yourself up peacefully, this is your final warning!"
He felt like he was being too nice to them, giving them a chance to surrender after they had shown open hostility.

(((((OOC: Uh... do the mines come to the surface after Nerina passes through the entrance?)))))
Nerina follows behind Fletcher, her eyes as hard as steel. She now knows the trawlers are there, but were not acknowledging Fletcher's message of surrender to them. What could they be doing? As her stern finally passed through the entrance something happened...

<<< Yup>>>
On the bottom of the cove mouth, a switch was tripped, and the slack was released on the tethers of several proximity-triggered mines that now rose the rest of the way to the surface, though still anchored to the bottom. They had held out of ready detection range until this moment. If the destroyers attempted to go back through that passage, they would be triggered.
"Now!" the lead trawler called out. "Back through the estuary!" They raced for the mouth of a small river, too narrow and shallow for the destroyers to navigate.

Fletcher tried to stay calm when the mines first came up...a difficult task, considering the cruiser's larger size and the still-painful memories of his father's death. However, when he saw the trawlers escaping, he panicked and fired a shot, which completely missed the targets and landed on the river bank instead.
"The b*stards have got us trapped!" He radioed back to the fleet. "And they're getting away! We need help here!"

Nerina fired off a few shots at the trawlers, but her aim fell short of the targets as well. She was a little annoyed, but the fact that she was trapped with Fletcher in this small cove and their only path of escape was blocked by mines that had not been there before, a hidden fear started to rise inside her. She pushed it back down, trying to hard not to show her nervousness.
She was afraid of small spaces.

The communications chief relayed the situation of Nerina and Fletcher to Caleb, who ordered them to sit tight for the moment while they figured out what to do next.

Sit tight, he says, Nerina thought, I wonder how hard I would have to work to do that. But I'm in the Navy and I have suck it up.
Nerina tried her best to ignore the dizzy feeling that threatened to rise. Don't think of small spaces. Don't think of small spaces. Don't think of small spaces. she chanted silently in her head as she waited for the rest of the fleet to figure out how to get her and Fletcher free.

"Looks like the Americans are behind some kind of bottleneck...hang on...something's not right..." Mikhail said...
"Maybe we should do some recon," Alek replied.
((No idea what to do with the jets either... D: ))

After a period of several minutes, Janet finally lost track of the sub. She swore under her breath as she retracted the sonar out of the water, before contacting the fleet and repeating the message she had told the jets, as well as transmitting data on the sub's size, shape, speed, and last-known location and direction.
"Well, my work here is done. You can go on." She told the tanker. "There is a group of US Navy ships up ahead, should be around 3 hours of sailing for you. They'll tell you what to do when you get there. And be careful, although we've patrolled this area, there's still some risk."
--------------------------------------
Although they weren't very excited at flying blind right into the US Navy's radar range, Tanya and Ivan realised that it was just part of the job.
"Recon sounds good...better to see what we're up against before going trigger-happy." Tanya said.
---------------------------------------
Fletcher remained still...although the mines scared him, there was nothing in them that triggered the fear which that horrible night had planted deep inside him. As long as he stayed away from them, he was okay.
However, what did worry him was the unnatural quiet and stillness he sensed coming from the destroyer next to him.
"Lt. Hampton...is there something wrong?"

Nerina was brought out of her worry state when Fletcher spoke to her and asked her what was wrong. She wasn't sure whether she should tell him what she was feeling or not.
"I don't know, Sir," Nerina spoke up at last, shaking her front, "I just didn't think we'd get trapped in this little cove with no way out."

Caleb's attention was divided between the feedback from his communications staff concerning the sub and the tanker, and the predicament of Nerina and Fletcher. He sent Tobias over to inspect the situation from the air and report back. The Harrier mix made a couple of passes over the cove, noting the mines and the position of the destroyers relative to them.

"I didn't think they'd be this well prepared. Thought they were just a bunch of weak punks out to cause trouble." Fletcher replied. "But it's not like we're alone in this...remember, we have a whole fleet behind us."
He then looked up at Tobias, whose flyover seemed to confirm his words.

Nerina also saw Tobias fly overheard and smiled a little. "Yeah, I guess so," she replied, "but it just bothers me that we both fell for their little trick. I hope the fleet gets us out of here quick."

"The first thing they teach you in the military is to never underestimate your enemy...I forgot that for a second and now look where that got us." Fletcher said shamefully. "Next time, such a mistake might not be so forgiving."

"And I followed you without even knowing anything was amiss," said Nerina, "Sir, this may sound a little corny and unusual coming from me, but this is one mistake that we can learn from and take advantage of."
