In the cold Arctic, a race was about to begin in a town called Nome, Alaska. This was the Iditarod, a long, harrowing race by dog sled across an unforgiving land with very little shelter from wild animals. But the mushers and the sled teams were brave and forged ahead as if they weren't bothered by the apparent dangers out there.
One of the sled teams was led by a well-known champion husky named Sapphire Sky. She was strong, healthy, and very fast. She had already won three previous races in a row, which made her famous.
But Sapphire didn't want to be known for all that. She wanted to known for her courage, kindness, and good leadership of her team. Also because she was one of the first few female sled dogs to be lead dog. Her parents and sister supported her on this.
Sapphire looked back at her team, seeing if they were ready for the race, which was going to be announced soon. She could already see that her competitors were ready, knowing that there were already a couple of rivalries going on between the teams.
Oh well, it's all a part of racing, Sapphire thought as she waited for the signal.
~~~~~
At the edge of the forest that was a mile or so away from the town, a small, black wolf sat beside a large tree, watching as the racers were being prepared to start. Her name was Ebony.
She hated the fact that the dogs, blood-cousin to the wolf, had the luxury of sleeping in a warm place at night and having some meat in their bellies. But she, herself, as well as her fellow wolves, were usually left to fend for themselves in the cold Arctic and shivering at night and sleeping on an empty stomach.
To her, it wasn't fair.
If only I could be a part of one of those sled teams, then I wouldn't have to suffer so much out here on my own, the wolf thought as she rested her head on her paws and watched the town from a distance, Only in my dreams.
