"Okay, I'll drop by after breakfast," nodded Delfina.
~~~~~
Ebony shrugs, "It just happens every now and then, but mostly when someone or something highly stresses me out."
Raine smiled politely towards Mia as she set down a plate of two pancakes and some juice. "Thank you... I'm still very weak and tired, but I'll be fine..." She turned to Doc and her smile grew wider. "Doc's been taking good care of me... I'm eternally thankful for both of you for taking care of me... "
Doc smiled as he heard that. "I can't say that dealing with a sword-swinging loon was a pleasure, but I'd do it all again. By the way, what did they do with that guy, and does anyone have any idea where the hell he came from?"
Mia rolled her eyes. "They got him in lockup with the two other "guests". They're gonna talk to him this morning and see what he's all about. For all we know, he blew in on a cloud of pixie dust from Renfreak Land."
"I'll try not to do that to you again." Darcy took on a guilty look.
"Super." Mandy-Sue smiled as she turned to head out.
Raine thought for a moment before remebering what he looked like. "...That's right... that guy... he looked like he came from England during the Dark Ages... called me a "shiftwolf" whatever that was... Oh, who brought this?" She leaned over to pick up her black totebag with her sketchpad and pencil and her laptop in it.
"Eh?" Ebony had a perplexed look when Darcy said that about not doing that to her again, "Oh, it's not you. This came from two nights ago when there were two attempted murders, the first one I put a stop to by bashing down the would-be victim's door and got my nose scratched up and a broken headlight and the second by that little green autogyro named Misty who bit the guy's leg and got her eye stabbed for the effort. I was still a little stressed when Phoenix and I came to Cortez and then Diamond talked me into that race with you."
Delfina nodded and continued to eat her breakfast. She needed to get as much energy as she could today.
"Or some such place." Mia shrugged. "One of the guards just came in for a shot and he said the guy said something about a place called "Amber." Who knows any more? I'm just about ready to believe in Candyland if Lord Licorice and the Ice Cream queen show up."
"Lightning brought it back, Raine." Doc glanced over.
"Wow." Darcy looked about. "And these people must be going through a rough time as well."
Ronald steepled his hands as he eyed the youth across the table. Julian, his name was.
"If a huge black wolf is lunging and snarling at you, you're not about to stand there and ask the time of day." Julian snapped. "You didn't know that you had a shiftwolf in your midst?"
"We know NOW." Ronald sat back. "Raine might have put us through the ringer when she took off on her own shortly after the shift, but she has never maliciously hurt anyone. She is quite attached to one of the locals, though, he's become something of a father figure to her. Of course, she's become quite protective. So what do you know of "shiftwolves?"
"They originated from the Chaos realm." Julian began, "And they spread out through the shadows. Some adapt and pass their entire lives in a relatively inoffensive fashion, others become rootless - and sometimes... problematic. They are often recruited as mercenary troops or assassins. If you get one young enough, you might be able to teach it some scruples, but when one's coming at you, it's either them or you."
Ronald cocked an eyebrow at him, but said only "Please, do go on."
"They tend to attach to a strong leader figure, and from what I've seen -and felt - of this local doctor, he's definitely an alpha."
"I won't dispute that." Ronald allowed himself a slight smirk. "Keeps that young buck race car in line. Well, your case would be quite difficult to explain to the locals, and it was an unfortunate misunderstanding, both ways. We would have to discuss it at a meeting, but it's not like the other two cases of people attempting cold-blooded murder on others. We will let you know what we decide."
Back in his "cell", Julian sat and stared at the ceiling, as if trying to bore through the millions of tons of rock overhead with his eyes. He hadn't asked them about the mare yet, but he hoped they'd found her and brought her in. All he wanted to do was get a chance to breed the mare, then he could be out of here.
Maeve watched to see when Delfina was ready to depart.
Raine nodded in thanks, "Tell him I said thank you... I'm just glad he learned his lesson..." She stared in slight apprehension at the IV in her hand. "I guess everyone knows I'm some dangerous animal that deserves to be euthanized..."
"Yeah, when they "came over" by this strange transportation device that looked almost alien," said Ebony, "They were quite shocked to be in a world where they never existed, except in urban legends. Their own world was devastated by volcanic ash that suffocated just about everything living and left it a barren wasteland and they can never go back. I was the first "talking car" they met and I've become sort of a teacher and a protector to them."
Delfina finished her breakfast and discarded her tray. She then headed toward Mandy-Sue's to get her measurements for her new clothes.
"No." Mia stood up straight. "One of the reasons I took the clinic job here was so that I wouldn't ever be forced to do that in a hospital, what with "voluntary euthanasia" becoming the trend. "Voluntary" becomes exactly the opposite really fast, when people are pressured to do it "for the good of the family" or when grandma is on life support and junior's waiting on that inheritance, or cousin Phoebe's cerebral palsy impacts her "quality of life", however that's defined. That's how the Nazis started, getting people used to the idea of mass killing by degrees, before they moved onto the Jews and Gypsies and anyone else they didn't want "breathing their air." I didn't want to be a part of that for any reason."
"That's right." Doc concurred. "Evil doesn't always present itself as a black limo with an evil laugh, it slips itself in little by little, degrading the world one stolen soul at a time."
"And everyone I've met here has been pretty nice." Darcy looked about, "Not that I didn't hear of some troubles." She noted quite a few children running around. "I see a lot of kids just by themselves, without parents."
Maeve and Ruth-Ann caught up with Delfina as she left the dining hall. Ruth-Ann was a woman of bountiful curves, dusky skin and dark, wavy hair, in a scarlet satin bustier and black lacy skirt that looked more appropriate to a 19th-century "sporting house" than a subterranean refuge. Some native ancestry showed up in her high cheekbones and full lips, contrasting with the pale, slender strawberry blonde that was Maeve.
"Delfina, I don't know if you've met Ruth-Ann before, but here she is." Maeve presented the taller, darker woman to her friend. "If you're going for new clothes, she's really got an eye for that."
Raine shuddered inwardly at the sound of "death doctors" and nervously toyed with the edge of her sheets, "I know... but now because of the guy who stabbed me, everyone knows about what I can change into... maybe I really am a shiftwolf..."
"Their parents all have jobs to do," explained Ebony, "so the kids are left on their own, but not entirely. There's always an adult watching them. They're also drawn to me too. I'm close to their age group. One girl of about eleven sees me as a big sister of sorts to her. Her name's Dawn."
~~~~~
"Nice to meet you, Ruth-Ann," Delfina nodded toward the darker woman, "So you have and eye for new clothes, let's go give it try and see what works."
(((((OOC: That'll be fun and creative. We can play dress-up with Delfina... XD And I'm so tired, that I'm going to sleep now... Goodnight...)))))

"I guess saying it was just a misunderstanding didn't work." Michael said. He had finished his breakfast quickly. His laywer had said that there was more coming today, but he didn't know exacly what.
Aron was tired of being always in bed. This morning he was walking around, slowly and carefully, but at least he was getting some exercise. The rib did protest, but it was nothing that he hadn't felt before. He was more concerned about the stitches on his chest. When he had been stabbed, the shock and pain had been enough to immobilize him, almost with lethal results if it hadn't been for Ebony and Martin.

Ebony was willing to answer any more questions that Darcy might have, but had turned her attention back to her notebook computer for the time being, surfing the web for anything that interested her. Since she was a constant traveler, Ebony went to sites that were about places to visit. She was currently on a site about the Grand Canyon. In her sketchbook was that trail that she had drawn the last time that she was there six months ago.

Ricardo was in the process of waking up. Once he did, he wanted to move about... except for one thing...
