If we go purely by our scale of vehicular evolution, motor vehicles as we know them in the Cars universe would be a really young species, and aircraft even younger. Of course, this doesn't really work for a lot of people, so I've been bouncing around a theory that for much of history, there were vehicles that existed as primitive steam-driven or wind-driven affairs, and recently experienced an evolutionary leap. I just can't see that before the 20th century, they would have had no self-contained propulsion if they were to be reasonably independent beings with a civilization. So what are we looking at here, a steampunk past with an internal combustion present?

Hm... Well, we all know that the first thing that people actually rode in was a carriage or a wagon, but they were pulled by animals, so that doesn't work well. My theory's always been that they evolved from the good ol' model T, which, yes, would make them a young species. And, yes, Aircraft would be even younger. But then, they would have had to have been pretty darn intelligent already in Lizzie's younger years, so I understand how that wouldn't work. Hm... *ponders*

I was wonderin this a few days ago. The earth existed for like 6 billion years before any lifeforms sprung up? Then randomly, something intelligent popped up?
It would be quite impolite to call Lizzie a primitive species.

Exactly my point. Lizzie isn't primitive, she's just old.

er... the Benz patentwagen was the first "car". not the Model T. not by a looooong shot. wasn't even the first Ford. the Model A predates it by 5 years, being launched in 1903 (itself 18 years after the Benz - making the Benz 23 yrs older. a long time in the history of the motorcar). but putting aside the american view of history, I pretty much agree with evangline's point of steam/wind-powered vehicles.
or you could also theorise that it's a post-humans earth and that they evolved in a similar (but let pretend less violent) manner to the Terminators in the... er... Terminator... history thingy.

Well excuse me for not being car-savvy my entire life. *stalks off*

I know that I've heard of the Benz panterwagen somewhere before. It was on one of the Discovery Channel shows that don't air anymore called "Would You Believe It?"
Hmm. You learn something new everyday.

But would there have been cars before the panterwagon.
For some reason I'm seeing Chariots as an early car.

Bicycles became motorcylces so... it's not entirely impossible for chariots to evolve, through the panzerwagen, into cars...

Aircraft pose an interesting problem. Perhaps they evolved from gliders... *visions of anthropomorphic DaVinci-type machines in my head*

Perhaps they evolved from gliders... *visions of anthropomorphic DaVinci-type machines in my head* Now I've got that vision too. ;D And that's exactly how aircraft evolved technically. As technology got a little better, there were more advances in the line, until it got to the huge airliners and jet fighters of today.

God, this is a complicated one, isn't it ;D
For me, it's really difficult to imagine a line of possible evolution for sentient transport - after all, they're based off machines primarily designed for human transport. But as we all know - there's no humans in the cars universe. Unless they're somehow extinct, for unknown reasons. I can't imagine automotive 'evolution' without some form of higher intervention - human or otherwise. I've always wondered why Red had ladders on him - kinda useless in the context, don'tcha think?

If you wonder why Red has ladders, you should wonder why any of the cars have door handles, doors even. For that matter, why they have side windows.
