"Sounds like they hit you with a dart." Manuel joined Dawn in getting Delfina warm and comfortable. "I hope they caught the SOB's."
Hans and Gonzo cast fearful glances Ebony's way. They were now more afraid of her than of the deputy, and were probably wishing for a spell in prison rather than being on the outside... with HER.
"I hope not." Kendall turned another page. "Little Whiskers ran through one street after another. They were full of cars going this way and that, and none of them paid him any attention. They all looked so busy! No one had time for a little kit like him. He was getting tired, and hungry, and lonely. Now the big city didn't seem so exciting after all."

"Probably..." sighed Delfina as she laid her head down, "What's been happening with the brush fire while I was out...?"

Ebony just gave them one of her devilish grins, something that she had adopted from Kamui Exan, but remained quiet.

"I hope he finds his way back to the farm," said a little boy.

"The water bombers just arrived." Dawn pointed out two Bombardier 415's flying over the coast as they neared shore with their prisoner. "Looks like they'll have the situation in hand pretty soon."
"Let's go, children." the deputy hustled the prisoners over to the tow trucks as they arrived. "Thank you for your assistance, ma'am." he said to Ebony. "We wouldn't have wanted them to die on us."
"I hope so too." Kendall turned another page. "At last, Little Whiskers ducked into an alley. It looked quieter and safer than the street. He came to rest next to a garbage can, and then he heard a noise above him, and some trash fell onto his head. He shook it off and looked up... to see another kit looking at him with huge green eyes."

Delfina lifted her head to view the bombers, then dropped it back down. "Good, I need to rest now..."
*****
"Oh, heaven's no," snarked Ebony, "We wouldn't want that."

"He met a girl kit. So cute," said Artemis, without even realizing that some of her psychic gifts were leaking out of the block her aunt had put on her.

Dawn gently placed the blanket over her "older sister". "Just take it easy now."
"Is she gonna be OK?" Jastrow asked as he caught up. He didn't have Randy's advantages and was looking quite peaked from his physical efforts, not to mention smoke-smudged.
"Yeah, she's still loopy from the tranquilizer, that's all." Randy answered. "Buddy, you look like you need rest as bad as she does."
Jastrow raised his 'shades. He called me "Buddy"... Almost no one had called him that since his childhood days, especially not a civilian. "I guess I do." The small convoy was now entering port, where Carl and his cohorts would be formally placed under arrest.
"Hey, look who's waiting for you." Randy grinned. Jastrow turned his gaze to port, to see Dagmar waving an aerial while the long-suffering Malia desperately tried to keep her out of the way. The patrol boat, beaming, sounded off his own horn as he approached.
"Move'em out!" the deputy called, and drove out after the tow trucks.
"This kit was pale silver, and had tall ears to go with her eyes. Green Eyes looked down at Little Whiskers for a moment, and then went "Meeeow?" Kendall did his best imitation of kit sounds.

Delfina gave Dawn's hand one more lick and wagged her tail, before falling back into a deep slumber.
Freda was beside Stokes as they came into port and observing the scene with Jastrow and Dagmar. She smiled, "Those two make a great couple."
*****
Ebony fell in behind the tow trucks and left the fire zone to a much safer place.

The kids giggled when Kendall made the funny kit noises.

Stokes couldn't help but smile as he saw Dagmar come up and rub her cheek against Jastrow, heedless of his current filthy state. "Looks like someone could get lucky tonight." he chuckled, "Now if only they can ditch the chaperone."
"Green Eyes was the most beautiful thing that Little Whiskers had ever seen in his whole life, and here she was in an alley, in the big city, a place he had NEVER expected to find her. He looked up and MEOWED right back at her." Kendall made more noises.
The procession with the prisoners headed back to town while the water bombers dropped their first tankfuls over the fire. The water came down in clouds of droplets on top of the fire, causing great columns of steam to rise. They would do it again and again until the fire was finally quenched.

"That would take skill," smiled Freda, "And not to mention craftiness. But, I'm sure they can think of something."
*****
"Awww..." the children chorused, "That's so sweet."
"Little Whiskers found a girlfriend," piped up a little girl.

Ebony followed along, satisfied that she took care of the problem. She wanted to know all about these two and what their activities were anyway.

Bree was back up again, having rested for a bit. She also heard the water bombers flying overhead and sighed with relief. Soon the blaze would be under control, but not before it had consumed a number of dwellings past the ridgeline. At this point, it appeared to be a spark from a downed power line, but a nagging feeling told her that there was much more to it than that, and she wouldn't have been at all surprised if there was a wee bit of arson involved. Her deputy commander relayed to her the news that two individuals had been apprehended near the origin point of the blaze - one a grey van. Her eyes narrowed as she heard that, and she went outside immediately, up to the fence of the station compound. They would have to drive past this point to get to the town lockup, and she wanted to see for herself.
Sure enough, two tow trucks passed by, with a sheriff's deputy escorting.... and Ebony! She waved a blade to the Viper as she passed, and snorted a bit as the scents of the suspects hit her. One was already all too familiar!
Greg came up beside her, regarding the scene with a mixture of triumph and contempt. "Criminals are the dumbest people on the planet. They could make something of themselves, but will do anything rather than honest work to get a dollar. Some people's mothers..."
"I suppose I should call up Shale and my folks with the good news." Bree smiled. "They'd have a few choice things to say to these bottom feeders."
"Dagmar will certainly think of something. She comes across as the determined and wily type." Stokes smirked.
Randy paused and made a "fist-pump" with the balled-up end of an aerial in a GO-GET-HER gesture.
"Down she jumped, and touched noses with Little Whiskers." Kendall went on. "She sniffed at him, and rubbed cheeks. Then she started to purr, and Little Whiskers purred too. She was the first friendly thing he'd found in the city."

<<< Here is the wrap-up post. I hope this is OK >>>
From: "CMDR B. Levasseur" <blevasseur@uscg.mil> To: "Shale Huntington" <sh0456@gmail.com> Sent: Friday, Aug 01, 2014 9:32 AM Subject: GOT 'EM!
Shale, I'm happy to say that Carl Dietrich and his associates are now in custody, and now that the doctor's finally cleared me for flight, there's a lot of things I want to catch up on. Carl's accomplices, Hans Dammling and Anthony Burton ("Gonzo") confessed to starting the brush fire, and breaking into Wild Bill's studio, not to mention trying to poison me. We finally got the fire under control with the help of the water bombers and the hotspot crews (one of those was from Ash Mountain, I think you know some of them), but not before it consumed several farms, a sawmill and half a subdivision. The overall cost of this will run into tens of millions, and people are rightly angry about it.
Peter Vilinsky is auctioning off a few pieces of his art collection to raise money for the people who lost everything in the blaze, Kendall told me all about it when we talked to him and Ebony yesterday. The library's also after him to do another storytelling hour, as he was keeping the kids entertained while Ebony was out, and apparently he knocked'em dead. Now he wants to talk up the author of the Little Whiskers books about doing some games for the small kids.
Ebony, I hear, pulled her usual trick of somehow winding up in the thick of things like the salamander in the heart of the fire. She assisted in evacuation efforts and then helped to locate Dammling and Burton before they got themselves killed by the fire they created. Those two fine gentlemen are probably grateful to be safe in the town lockup than on the outside with her! They and Carl will almost certainly be facing some very stiff sentences - I should hope so - for kidnapping, arson, attempted murder, etc. . Ebony and Kendall will probably be spending a few more days here with their kids, though they mentioned a trip to the Grand Canyon in the near future. Sounds very good, maybe we could do something like that the next time we get a free week together.
I also visited Delfina's camp again, and things are pretty much back to normal there, though with a new addition. You know who I mean. Lt. Stokes and Ms. Nightshade are getting very sweet on each other, and Ensign Jastrow is dating Erika's sister now - the early DNA results came back with an 80% probability of close relation and the final results will probably be even closer. I'm getting things moving for Jastrow's promotion, right after I send this. He's earned every bit of it. Lt. Stokes may also get something by and by. He's good as gold and won't back down from anything.
My folks will be heading out on Sunday, after resting up a bit. The town was very happy to have their assistance during the fire. If there was any silver lining to that situation, the fire at least kept Mom too busy to show anyone any more baby pictures!
So, how's it going with you and your family? I'm really anxious to know how that retreat experience is working out for Tanaree. I hope she can finally start healing and come to terms with life.
P.S. You should see the new sculpture Bill's working on. It's a "mermaid", a creature from human mythology. Looks suspiciously like Delfina.
