Ebony gave a mental sigh, 'I know... I just wish it wouldn't have to be so complicated right now... I really don't want to lose my babies... and did you see that glare Tony gave me...? It was scary...'

Lucille looked on with disgust. She could pursue the line of questioning, but it would make her look like she was badgering the witness, and Judge True had already been up one side of her and down the other in his chambers. That old SOB, ornery and mean as dirt when provoked, was one of the last of a breed of judges who could shrivel the fastest-talking attorney with a single cold glance, and actually enjoyed dishing out harsh sentences to clients like Tony Blitz. She leaned over to her client. "If worst comes to worst, we can appeal whatever he hands down and try for a retrial and a change of venue."
The bailiff returned the pictures to Ebony, careful not to let anyone else get a view out of respect for her family's privacy.
Dr. Scott was in the back of the small lab, doing a blood workup with whatever he had on hand. He had a certain amount of antibiotics, including Vancomycin, the strongest available, that had been brought in by pharmacists who had the presence of mind to clean out and bring in their stores' inventories at the time of the blowup. He wondered about what bacterium Daniel might have picked up in that ice age world and thought that perhaps he should bring out the big guns now.
"Just rest for now." Liska whispered reassuringly.
"That's awful." Misty said as she learned of this.

'Ignore him' Phoenix said glaring at Tony, resisting the urge to scan his thoughts. 'He would use your twins if he got the chance'.

Ebony accepted the pictures back and carefully straightened them up and placed them back in her side compartment.
'I'm trying...' she sent to Phoenix, 'but I can't forget what he had done to me...'

Tony nodded subtly at what Lucille told him and whispered back, "Will that work?"

Phoenix blinked for a moment and flicked her mirrors from what she was picking up. 'I know, but if things don't go their way, they'll try to appeal for a retrial somewhere else'.
(((Ahh, stupid Ebay, and mouse not being fast enough....)))

'I don't like the sound of that...' Ebony replied mentally, 'I don't think I'd be able to survive something like that...'

'I don't either' Phoenix sent, keeping a mental eye on the Neon's thoughts, no time like the present to use what she was taught. 'Be prepared for a curveball encase she throws it'.

Aron wondered briefly if to take Daniel's dog tags for Scott to know the blood type, but he remembered that Daniel had been one of the regular blood donors, so Scott probably knew already.
"I'm going to check on him." He said to Delfina and Misty, then walked to the clinic. There was no reason to rush.
Daniel kept on breathing rapidly, and while the heart monitor was on silent unless the heartrate would slower, it was above average. He shivered and looked back to the ceiling before closing his eyes.
Aron looked inside, and saw what seemed to be sleeping Daniel, though the breathing and seeing the heart monitor was slightly unsettling. He didn't see Dr. Scott, so he slowly and quietly went inside, and leaned against the wall near the doors, watching Daniel.

'Alright... I will...' Ebony nodded mentally, glad to know that she had Phoenix there to warn her of what might happen or come to pass.

Kendall resisted the impulse to paw the floor, and looked up at Ebony with what he hoped was an encouraging look. Lucille got up again and approached the stand once again. "Very touching... I don't suppose you'd go for a paternity test, would you?"
Mia came up to the door. "He's got a fever and redness in the wound area, and the doctor is still doing blood work."
Liska studied the wound site with some dismay. Red streaks were now visible along Daniel's arm.
Dr. Scott returned. "It's sepsis all right, but it would take a blood culture to confirm bacteremia."

'You know the answer to that Ebs', Phoenix sent. 'She thinks you'll say no'.

'I'm not going to let her win this one,' Ebony managed not to flinch when she made eye contact with Lucille. "Well," she in answer to the Neon's question, "If that's what it takes, then yes, I'd be willing."

Lucille was quick to mask her reaction, but that had not been the answer she was expecting. If the paternity test proved out, then what? If her client refused, it would not look good for his case. "Your honor, I wish to end cross-examination for the present, so that I may confer on this matter with my client."
Judge True grudgingly granted that request as a bailiff opened the doors and escorted another person into the courtroom.... a young sport-compact female with a scarred face.
Misty stayed with Delfina as Aron went to the door, but her sensitive hearing made out a few words. "What's "sepsis?"

Ebony was relieved to be finally allowed to leave the stand. She paused on her way back to her place with her friends when she saw someone else being led into the courtroom and recognized the scarred face. Carrie...

"Well, I'm not doctor, but I think since I've been in the clinic enough times myself, it's a form of serious infection originating from an injury," said Delfina.

Phoenix bit her lip slightly as the other woman came in. 'I don't think she'll be so welcome to mental prods'.
