Raine could sense the slight sadness in the old Hornet's voice, knowing that it was still quite painful to speak about his past, especially his racing history.

"I would too," agreed Ebony, "I have no tolerance for being cooped up for so long. I can sympathize with the humans for wanting out again. They figured out what kind of world that they were in once they met me."
~~~~~
"Maybe it started when I accidentally touched that crystal and transformed," said Delfina, "Phoenix was with me and she saw what happened to me."
~~~~~
Jade blinked when she saw Dawn and Misty. "What are you guys doing here?"

Daniel made a signal that he was a friend, then took away the tape from the mouths. "You're okay." He said. The sound of guns firing was dying down to nothing. "Julian, how long until you can move us?"
"I'm lost." Aron said.

"Any time." Julian nodded. He and a few other soldiers had had to break through the rear window of the RV to avoid going through the door, and his suspicion had proved justified as they defused a tripwire that had been attached to the door on one end and a frangible bomb on the other. He listened in on the radio. "The big chief is calling everyone together on the highway." He turned back to Daniel. "Got any blankets for them?" The women, ranging from fourteen to late twentysomething in age, were, to put it delicately, in a sorry state of undress, not really rising from their shell-shocked trance until the novel sight of Sarge snapped them out of it.
Sarge strutted past, showing a bit of damage to his left rear fender and a broken headlight, but displaying the attitude of a man who had nothing to be ashamed of. "Let's hustle, gentlemen."
"It wasn't an easy road to the top." Doc said, a little wistfully. "And after the wreck, it all seemed to come down like a house of cards. I doubted that I had any reason to stay alive. After being discarded like that, I just buried it, went back to school and made up for all those classes I'd cut, and got my degree."
"They do catch on fast." Strip agreed, looking back to Lightning and Ebony. "It'd be a mistake to underestimate them."
"That probably had a lot to do with it." Kathleen nodded in understatement. "When we're back with Denise, we can work on it some more." She raised her head again as she heard howls in the distance.
Liska also heard the howls, though she was closer to the fire. "You suppose there'd be dire wolves here too?"
"Uh... we were just curious." Dawn looked down. Misty blushed a little. "So what're you doing out here?"

Raine made a quiet sound of aknowledgement, turning her head slightly to glance at the EKG monitor. "I didn't think I would get an arrythmia from this... I can't help but feel scared..."

After they were provided with blankets, they were hustled out of the cars quickly. There was no real telling if there was going to be another attack. Daniel picked up the youngest and held her since she appeared to be too weak to even stand.
She's old enough and probably has been abused. He thought as he looked at her, but she was not looking at his face. I got to wonder if she is pregnant yet. The remaining group appeared at the highway, waiting for the move. The sooner they left, the better.
"All animals fear fire." Aron reassured Kathleen. "It's too hot, too bright, and they can't control it."
((Going to sleep, puppet please))

"I'm lost too," Delfina said to Aron, "I'm just taking wild guesses."
She turned back to Kathleen, "Yeah, Denise could possibly help."
Her ears twitched as she also heard the howls, causing her body to grow tense. She looked over at Liska, "There'd be some dire wolves around. They hunt in packs. And I'm also afraid they hunt at night too. They're probably looking for a tasty, defenseless meal right now."
~~~~~
"Yes," Ebony nodded in agreement, "Don't ever take them for granted. They're just as intelligent as we are. And there's a woman with us that you should never take for granted and that's the one over there talking to Kathleen."
~~~~~
"I'm trying to see where Ricardo and Phoenix are going," replied Jade, "and why they're taking the twins into the tunnels."

Julian met up with the main group who were assembling on the highway, and acknowledged the general and his aides. General DeVries now had a bandage on one side of his face, having taken a bullet fragment. LTC Montieth, one of the few women to remain behind, now had an upper leg wound but also an expression that suggested she'd dished out far worse in return. Not all the blood now spattering her jumpsuit was hers. Sarge assisted Daniel with the women, opening up his back end to carry the weaker ones to the rally point. Julian went out ahead, waiting for everyone to get into order.
"We'll want to keep a close eye on the little kids." Kathleen curled her lip as she heard more howls. "And start out again as soon as the others get back. And fire generally works. Best keep it going."
"I got that feeling as soon as I laid eyes on her." Strip concurred.
Doc had been warned of the tendency to arrythymia, and Dr. Scott had shown him the medication to counter that and how to adminster it. He took up the provided syringe and injected it into the IV line. Human medicine might be a whole new world to him, but he could measure out a precise dosage if he knew the amount.
"That's odd." Dawn answered. "Whatever for?"

(((((OOC: If it's a full moon, Delfina would be able to change into that tiger/wolf beast form... but something drastic has to happen to make her do that...)))))
"Fire's a good idea," agreed Delfina, "Just gotta keep it burning long enough to keep the dire wolves away until we're ready to move again."
She paused for a moment, "But I'm getting this strange urge and I'm not sure what it is."
~~~~~
"Her name's Delfina Thompson," said Ebony, "She's one of the few scientifically-inclined humans around. There isn't a time that I haven't seen her with a book. She's also quite smart and loves to solve puzzles."
~~~~~
"That's what I want to know," replied Jade, "So I'm following them to find out."

Raine glanced quietly as Doc administered the medicine, wincing as she felt it move into her vein in her hand. "Ngh..." She gritted her teeth from the pain. "I hate IVs... they scare me so much..."

<<< OK, let's start one. >>>
Peggy was too excited to sleep, what with the flight, the sudden change of scenery, and the animals they'd seen. A number of the children were tucked away in blankets in Seth's cabin, and he himself had drifted off. Peggy, teddy bear in hand, walked down the ramp and into the trampled-down area, and looked out across the plain as the moon rose. It was very bright, enticing her to explore the environs. Small she was, and it took only a moment for her to vanish from sight in the surrounding grass.
Several miles away, several dire wolves were on the hunt. A new scent reached their noses... something potentially edible.
"So what does she do when she's not dealing with the magic stuff?" Strip asked. He hadn't heard any input from Lightning in a while, and checked to see if the other racer had fallen asleep.
"OK.." Dawn said.
"We wanna find out too." Misty spoke up.
Kathleen suppressed a yawn. "Sorry, long day..."
The procession started to move along the highway, with the Apache woman moving slowly behind. Once they were at a good walking pace and all within sight of one another and him, Julian willed the crossing, one more time. Where it had been overcast, a bright moon now greeted them. Grass was under their feet. A wolf howled in the distance.
Irene set down not far from the human party. Julian waved to those helping out the newly rescued women and turned to the helo. "How many can those pods hold?"
"Two each, if they're skinny enough." Irene answered. "You want me to take them to the camp? I can smell them on the wind. They're maybe twenty miles west of us."
"Yes, we'd appreciate that." Daniel answered. "They don't look like they can make a long march."
The women were a little intimidated by the big, heavily-armed helo woman with the scarred face, but finally they were secured into the pods and strapped in. "Shouldn't take more than a few minutes. Be right back." With that, Irene lifted off.
Sarge watched her leave, then allowed himself the small luxury of a stretch and a shake. If there was any danger here, it would come from predators of the four-legged variety.
"I didn't much like clinics either, before I started working in one." Doc commiserated. "Just imagine yourself in some place you like." Doc answered. "Like a beach."

Raine leaned her head back into the pillow, feeling the cool surface on her feverish skin. "I know... but I just have this problem of having all these negative thoughts playing themselves over and over in my mind..." She closed her eyes for a second as she felt Doc's antenna brush her bangs away from her eyes in a comforting manner.

Lightning had finally fallen asleep, quite exhausted from the day's excitement, not to mention the stress that came with it.
"I got to know her quite well during the past two weeks," replied Ebony, "Delfina is a Geologist. She wrote several papers on the layering of rockbeds, as she told me."
~~~~~
Delfina smiled sympathetically as Kathleen tried to suppress a yawn. "Long day for all of us," she nodded in agreement.
It was then that her ears twitched again and she looked out into the surrounding plains. She could hear the howling of the dire wolf pack, which had become much more persistant now.
"They've picked up a scent of prey," said the catgirl, going alert, "but I'm getting bad vibes right now. Something's not right."
She jumped off the rock and into the grass, her nose pointed in the direction of the where the scent was coming from, trying to figure out what got the dire wolves all excited for.
~~~~~
Jade waved a hand, an indication to follow. "C'mon then," she said, "Let's see where they're going."

Peggy wandered through the grass that was well over her head in some places; she could barely see three feet ahead of her. In the meantime, several wolves were closing on her scent.
Peggy's mother went inside the cabin of the dozing Seth to check on her children, and found her missing. She dashed outside, calling for her little girl. "Has anyone seen Peggy?"
Liska rose as she heard the woman's anxious voice. "Uh-oh..." She called to Delfina and Ebony. "One of the kids wandered off somewhere."
Kathleen started to move about, flaring her nostrils and trying to get a fix on the child.
Strip nudged Lightning. "Buddy, wake up, we got a situation here."
Dawn and Misty crept behind Jade as she trailed Ricardo and Phoenix. What were those two up to?
Doc paused, then glanced over to the corner where there was an MP3 stereo. "Let's check that out."
