Ebony passed by Lightning's hiding place as a signal to take over. She'd be taking a different route.
~~~~~
Meanwhile, as she watched Delfina sleep fitfully, the demon wondered if she had enough power to speed up the woman's recovery.
Lightning revved his engine in sync with Ebony's, masking his entry. He turned and took her place, staying just out of Grayston's sight. He had a right twisty course planned, and he'd had his suspension adjusted for off-road and was going to make it very interesting for the old Ford.
Doc repeated what he'd heard from Raine. "That's the best imitation I can do."
Raine looked a bit confused. "Sounds like some ancient dead language... I don't know why that happened in the first place..." She slumped on the ground in mental defeat. "What's with this weird hooplah anyway? This doesn't make any sense at all..."
Grayston roared as she changed course going for more off road. "You are gonna be the death of me Girl is you don't stop!"
As soon as Lightning took her place, Ebony quickly turned down a hidden road, taking a different route toward the trap that she had chosen for Grayston, using the mention of the spellbooks as bait.
"Well, that's what we have to find out while the kid and Ebony are out playing with Mr. Magician." Doc looked at Raine again, studying her. "So, what was your earliest memory?"
Lightning grinned fiercely as Grayston took the bait. C'mon... I'm just getting warmed up here!
Grayston growled as he chased after 'Phoenix'. He was starting to get frustrated with his granddaughter and this chase of hers.
Cole found himself at the mouth of the cave. Or at least one of the two. The other one was a small fit, but he could pass it in case Grayston would seek revenge. He heard the distant roaring of engines, reconizing one of them as Ebony's.
: I'm there, waiting for you. :
: I'll be on my way. : Kathleen went to the makeshift strip, starting up her engine. "Better not fly for a bit." she told the other aircraft. "We might get some more "bad weather."
"Are you sure you don't remember any parents or family?" Doc asked.
Lightning was enjoying the cat-and-mouse game, but kept Grayston's power in mind. He took every twist and turn he could see, with Shayla guiding him away from any potential dead ends through his onboard radio.
Raine glanced down, "No... not at all... I'm just like Ebony... one of those orphans who never knew that anyone would care about them... why do you ask?"
Ebony's trap was a nice little box canyon with only one way out. There was room for her to manuever around and basically outsmart Grayston again. She really didn't have the spellbooks with her as they would've weighed her down during the chase.
She waited for the right moment to call out to Grayston by radio once she knew that he was close enough.
Grayston roared as he continued to chase and lashed out with a bolt of lightning at 'Phoenix' in frustration.
Lightning felt the bolt singe his rear fender, but suppressed any urge to cry out. He just accelerated and turned down a stony wash, taking his chances with the loose purchase and slippery conditions after the snow melt. It would be even more painful for Grayston.
"Can you tell me the earliest thing you remember?" Doc rephrased his original question. "Someone must have cared for you at some point."
